Sponsored Post – from the Faith & Energy Action Team –
Let’s take action, y’all! Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We have something easy and rewarding that you can do to help document Austin’s progress on reducing our carbon footprint. Plus, you don’t even have to leave your house to do it!
Like most of you on this side of climate change, the Faith and Energy Action Team (FEAT) was thrilled to hear that the Paris Agreement was passed. We have now made a global commitment (developing countries included) to share the responsibility for tackling climate change. However, the Paris Agreement is pretty vague when it comes to exactly how this is going to happen. Because of this, it is our job to do what we can at a grassroots level to push our community towards this goal. In conjunction with small communities like ours across the world working at a grassroots level, this “small” movement can (and will) snowball into a national movement; our lives depend on it. So, what can we do locally?
Something that stuck out to us after the signing of the Paris Agreement was that although we are all excited, we still have to figure out how to hold each other accountable in our progress. The Faith and Energy Action Team has created “Our Earth’s Carbon Bank” to do just that.
We primarily focus on carbon emissions reduction and want to help our community with reducing our carbon footprint as a whole. In this “bank” anyone can make “Carbon Deposits,” or records, of anything you’ve done to reduce your personal (or organization’s) carbon emissions. It can be anything from walking to the grocery store once a week instead of driving, actively turning the lights out in your home when you leave the room, purchasing an electric car, or putting solar panels on your home or church. Our scientists take those actions and convert them into quantifiable data so we can really see how huge of an impact we’re making by doing these things. We’re concentrating on Austin for now, but encourage anyone to make a deposit.
The Faith and Energy Action Team is a coalition of of Austin’s faith communities addressing the challenges and opportunities faced by climate change and the world’s future energy needs. FEAT meets on the 2nd Monday of every month at a different Faith Based Center to discuss our community’s efforts and what we can do to work together towards a mutual goal to save Mother Earth. We welcome (and encourage) people from all faith groups; we do not discriminate. In fact, we would like to bring Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Agnostics, Atheists (and everyone in between) together with a common goal. Please consider joining our next meeting, on February 8th at 7pm at St. Ignatius Church on Oltorf for an exciting discussion about our efforts to reduce Austin’s carbon emissions and what we can do moving forward.
