Weatherization measures (listed below) prevent hot air from escaping during the winter and keep heat out during the summer, dramatically reducing your energy bills. According to the US Department of Energy, sealing your ducts and adding proper insulation alone can cut heating and cooling costs by as much as 30%. Savings from upgrades quickly surpass the cost of the work, especially with the available rebates.
The weatherization measures, IF NEEDED, include:
- Repair leaking AC ducts
- Caulk around plumbin under sinks
- Weather-strip doors and seal all points of air infiltration
- Install Low-E windows, solar screens, or awnings (to windows in direct sun)
- Install additional attic insulation
- Radiant barrier
A/C Replacement
Replacing an air conditioner with a more efficient unit improves your home's comfort and can lower your energy bills considerably. Energy Star A/Cs use 20% less energy than standard and can lower cooling bills 30% if replacing a unit older than 12 years. Heat pumps are a more efficient alternative to A/Cs and furnaces and, according to Energy Star, "can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume."
