JOB: Austin Office of Sustainability hiring Communications Lead

 

The City of Austin Office of Sustainability has just posted a job opening for a position that will serve as the Office's Communications lead.

Are you great at working with teams? If you answered yes to all of these questions, you might be interested in a position with the City of Austin Office of Sustainability, leading the group's communications and public information activities.
 
Primary Position Roles:

1. Lead, direct, and coordinate communication and outreach activities for the Office of Sustainability. 
2. Serve as primary staff community outreach liaison for the Office of Sustainability to various formal, informal and advisory groups including community representatives, national and local governmental officials, boards, commissions, and community organizations. 
3. Represent the Office’s interests and positions before the media, and serve as its designated Public Information Manager. 
4. Prepare communications materials including technical reports, white papers, articles, briefs, brochures, official correspondence, powerpoint presentations, and web content.
5. Coordinate related efforts with other departments, interdepartmental stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.
7. Provide leadership, insight, and strategic input for all levels of conservation, livability and sustainability-related public information and community relations activities. Coordinate related efforts with other city departments to reach stated goals.
8. Manage the reporting of the performance measures for communication of the Office’s initiatives.
9. Develop and manage contracts, grant activities or inter-local agreements related to the city’s sustainability initiatives. 
10. Stay abreast of local, regional, and national sustainability policies, technologies, trends, and climate change issues.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of conservation, climate protection, and sustainability practices, trends, and communications strategies.
  • Leadership and strategic thinking to solve complex problems in a rapidly shifting political environment.
  • Skill in leading collaborative processes with cross-functional teams with no direct reporting authority, and in negotiating positive outcomes in competitive environments.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the media, the public and city employees.
  • Skill in interpreting, organizing, prioritizing, executing and coordinating complex assignments, projects and programs.
  • Effective delegation and staff management skills.
  • Knowledge of project management, grant applications processes, and research techniques.
  • Skill in green business practices, budget management, purchasing and contracting processes and systems.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications. Poise in public settings.
  • Experience in delivering projects including creative direction, use of graphics, writing and editing techniques, print production process, and consultants.
  • Skill in marketing and promotion of events, campaign development, internal and external message development.
  • Competency in development and utilization of a wide variety of media, including slide presentations, video, digital and web media, print, graphic, and social media.
  • Knowledge of governmental processes and relationships, Federal, State, and local laws, ordinances, and policies.
