Austin Energy Public Meeting – Raising Electricity Rates

November 25 @ 4:39 pm

Basic Info

Date:
November 25, 2024
Time:
4:39 pm

They are taking public hearings first so get there a little early!

Right now, Austin Energy and the City Council are considering how electricity is generated and
whether using coal – an out-dated and dirty form of generation – is still in the best interests of
ratepayers. The rate case sets residential and commercial electricity rates for the next several
years, possibly longer.

The Austin Energy rate case gives us the opportunity to make sure that our electric rates and
means of power generation reflect our priorities as a city, like those in the Climate Protection
Plan. The Sierra Club is calling for a new rate plan that will:

  • Create a specific program for those Austinites who want to put solar on their roofs;
  • Encourage energy efficiency by charging less to those who are smart about their energy use;
  • Create a specific program to promote community solar power;
  • Adequately fund our rebates and incentives to meet and exceed our solar power and energy efficiency goals;
  • Protect Austin’s residential population from large utility increases and provide free weatherization to those who qualify;
  • Maintain and expand our Green Choice program, so that those volunteering to get to 100 percent renewable energy can help Austin increase its renewable goals and move Beyond Coal.
You can learn more about the public hearings, opportunities to speak, and ways to take action in
your neighborhood at www.austinbeyondcoal.org.
