Date: sATURDAY, October 8, 2011
Time: 9 a.m. to Noon
Location: Acacia Preserve, near Dripping Springs, TX
Activity Goal: To maintain native savanna by removing juniper and to protect Golden-cheeked warbler habitat by placing the cut juniper around hardwood species that are integral to this endangered bird’s habitat. Central Texas Trail Tamers will also be building a trail at the site on this day, which participants are welcome to help with.
Activity Details: After arriving at the property we will have a brief safety orientation, before we begin removing small juniper with loppers and small handsaws. We will then drag the cut trees to an area of Golden cheeked warbler habitat where we will place them around young hardwood species such as Spanish oak and escarpment black cherry to protect them from browsing deer. Volunteers should wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Participants should also bring a bottle of water, a snack, and dress for the weather.
Participants Need to Bring: Water bottle that can be refilled and carried with them. Work gloves. Loppers and small tree saws are preferable if you have them. Volunteers will not be allowed to use chainsaws. Wear clothing appropriate for field work.
