As we’ve seen over and over again throughout the past year, advancing racial justice isn’t just a momentary movement. The effects of systemic racism are pervasive whether or not a spotlight is being shined on it.

“Unfiltered Racial Justice,” a virtual community event, will convene leaders from Notley Tide’s racial justice nonprofit partners, corporate partners and members for an exchange of lessons learned, areas of growth and challenges each group has encountered this past year. From this event, we can walk away with a better understanding of how organizations and individuals can work together, build coalitions and support each other in advancing racial justice in our community.

Schedule

12:10 – 12:50 PM: Advocates on the Front Line for Racial Justice: Challenges, Growth & The Future Panel

2020 saw both a pandemic and a renewed reckoning with race and the effects of those events continue to this day. The nonprofits working to advance racial justice have seen an uptick in visibility and interest, but not withouts its own challenges and growth as a result. Hear from Notley Tide’s racial justice nonprofit partners explain what exactly resulted for their organizations in the past year and what the future looks like for each of them.

Panelists: Mimi Marziani (Executive Director of Texas Civil Rights Project), Dr. Peniel Joseph (Founding Director of UT: Center for the Study of Race & Democracy), Aaron Arguello (San Antonio Advocacy Organizer, MOVE Texas), Chas Moore (Founder, Executive Director, Austin Justice Coalition)

Moderator: Dr. Kazique Prince (Executive Director of the Central Texas Collective for Racial Equity)

12:55 – 1:35 PM: A Business Reckoning: Joining the Fight for Racial Justice Panel

The last year saw a number of businesses making declarations on their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and support for racial equity — some making statements for the first time and others continuing to push for that change. However, seeing what companies have done beyond their statement is oftentimes a completely separate story. Hear from organizations about how they put their commitment into action, what obstacles they didn’t foresee coming with this work and how they have overcome those obstacles.

Panelists: Dr. Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Guillory Medina (Inclusion & Accountability Director, Everlywell), Lance Matthiesen (Global Manager, McKinsey Black Network (MBN) Programs, McKinsey & Company), Serena Townsend (Chief People Officer, Silicon Labs)

Moderator: Janice Omadeke (Founder & CEO, The Mentor Method)

1:40 – 2:30 PM: Racial Justice in Community: Collaboration & Commitment Panel

Community is often made up of your neighbors, colleagues, friends and families. Yet more often than not, they are siloed as different parts of our lives. With something as pervasive as racial injustice, which affects each and every facet of our life, this silo effect often harms the cause. Hear how nonprofits and businesses have been able to collaborate and move together in the fight for racial justice.

Panelists: Jonathan Gutierrez (South/Central Field Manager, MOVE Texas), Rad Wood (Partner, Vela Wood), Rockie Gonzalez (Deputy Director, Austin Justice Coalition)

Moderator: Amy Stansbury (Editor-in-Chief, The Austin Common)
