Join us to watch a presentation: What will climate change cost?
Presenter: Professor David Trossman, University of Texas at Austin, Oden Institute.

Summary: It’s high time that earth system models are used for decision-making. What are they being used for? The numbers about temperature increases, precipitation changes, sea level rise, and other outputs of climate simulations are now being used by economists to boil the impacts of climate change down to dollars and cents. That may not make a whole lot of sense to people who understand the environmental and humanitarian crisis that is climate change, but it’s going to cost a lot of cents. The simplest way of quantifying our impact on climate that informs policy-makers about what the price of emitting carbon should be is the social cost of carbon. This presentation will show some examples of the factors that contribute to the social cost of carbon and what has been done to inform international agreements about the optimal balance between the economy and our greenhouse gas emissions. Why can’t we have our cake (good economy) and eat it (reduce emissions) too? We can talk about that.

Breakout Groups on U.S. Emergencies
We face crises mostly of our own making: a pandemic out of control, an economic depression, systemic racism, and increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change. The Sierra Club is an agent of change. At the last part of this meeting, we will break out (on Zoom) into small discussion groups to personally share and to discuss our individual actions and the Sierra Club’s role in working for change. There will be a few anonymous online polls. We will write up participants’ views into a short report that we’ll send to both the Austin and the state Executive Committees. I hope you’ll join us to contribute and to be an agent for change.
