What's Inside...

Have opinions about where Austin should put a new professional soccer stadium? Now’s your chance to share ’em!

The City of Austin is hosting a series of information sessions and public input opportunities next week. The discussion will focus primarily around one particular tract of land (McKalla Place), which was selected by City Council as a location worth researching and exploring further.

What is McKalla Place?

McKalla Place is a piece of city-owned land located near the Domain. The city purchased the property from a chemical company in the 90s and has spent some money remediating its environmental damages.

It’s currently being used as a storage site by Austin Water, Austin Resource Recovery, and the city’s public works department. As Council Member Kathie Tovo has noted, it also has been identified as a possible site for an affordable housing development.

What’s this about a soccer stadium again?

In October, the owner of the professional soccer team Columbus Crew announced that he is exploring moving the team from Ohio to Austin, citing the desire for a centrally-located stadium as one of the major drivers motivating his decision. The announcement has been marked by excitement for some (it would be Austin’s first professional sports team) and apprehension by others (who fear Columbus Crew might be seeking public funds or favors from Austin taxpayers).

So how can you participate?

Attend an information session! They’ll be held on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, May 8th from 6pm to 6:45pm and from 7pm to 8pm at the Northwest Recreation Center Gym
  • Thursday, May 10th from 7pm to 8pm at the Montopolis Recreation Center in Room 1

Or if you can’t make it in-person to an event, you can also fill out this survey online.
