Despite their name, many of the “weeds” growing around us are edible and have medicinal properties. In this class, Katherine Grimes, Farm Educator at the New Farm Institute and a long-time food gardener and herbalist, will teach participants how to identify, harvest and store wild, edible and medicinal plants. The bulk of the class will involve hands-on learning and will take place outside in the weedy areas around SFC’s Teaching Garden.

About Katherine: A Native of northern California, Kate has been food gardening since infancy. In addition to co-managing a small permaculture farm on Waiheke Island in New Zealand, she has worked at various local nurseries as well as the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. In 2013, Kate apprenticed with local herbalist, Ellen Zimmerman. She also completed her Permaculture Design Certificate with the Austin Permaculture Guild. She recently completed an internship in medicinal plant conservation with United Plant Savers in Appalachian Ohio. She currently works as the Farm Educator at the New Farm Institute at Green Gate Farm in Austin.

Classes are for adults. Youth ages 12 and up may attend with purchase of an additional ticket and close parent/guardian supervision during class.

Registration closes one business day before class. All attendees must purchase tickets to attend. No walk-ins allowed.
