Come speak up against the City’s proposed Billion Dollar Mistake on the Lake!
This Thursday the Austin City Council will hold a public hearing on the Austin Water Utility’s request to use OUR parkland in the Upper Bull Creek greenbelt to dig a huge shaft to move water from the proposed new water treatment plant to a reservoir miles away.
The hearing is scheduled for 4pm and is item 98 on the Council agenda. If we can convince 4 Council Members to vote NO, the Water Utility will have to come up with a less damaging plan.
The legal standard for approving a non-park use of park land is that there is not a reasonable and prudent alternative.
The City has many options that are better for our environment – and our water bills – than digging miles of tunnels underneath park land and wildlife preserves. Foremost is recognizing that we can manage our water use in the summer – when water use is highest – to keep our "peak" water use flat for years to come. Neighbors living near the proposed shaft site have proposed an alternate route that avoids park and preserve land. Learn about their proposal at www.StopTheShafts.com.
