Your Green Week Ahead: National Public Lands Day, Drug Take-Back, & a Trash Fashion Show

[Volunteer] Saturday, September 26th from 9am to 3:30pm is National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands including parks, trails, and green spaces. Austin’s annual NPLD event is hosted by the Austin Parks Foundation and Texas Conservation Corps. National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is on Saturday.

[Take-Back] Saturday, September 26th from 10am to 2pm is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. It is important that leftover or expired drugs and medications be disposed of properly, to prevent them from ending up in the wrong hands or in our local rivers and streams. Several sites throughout Travis County will be accepting prescription drugs for proper disposal, including the Austin Household Hazardous Waste Facility and Barton Creek Square MallMore info>>

Brite Ideas is hosting a free aquaponics class on Saturday.[Gardening] Saturday, September 26th at noon Brite Ideas is hosting a free class on the future of aquaponics at its store on South Congress Avenue. Vertical growing systems, automated controllers, and advanced monitoring and lighting systems will be discussed. The goal is to develop techniques that make aquaponics planting and harvesting easier than ever. More info>>


The Trash Makeover Challenge is on Saturday.[Fashion Show] Saturday, September 26th at 7pm Texas Campaign for the Environment is hosting the Trash Makeover Challenge Fashion Show at The North Door. The event brings together Austin’s environmental community and some of the best fashion designers, stylists, and runway models from around Texas to show off looks composed of at least 90 percent recycled and reclaimed materials. This year’s theme is “Steampunk Meets Nature”–a little Victorian, a little industrial, a little green. Ticketsmust be purchased in advance. More info>>


There will be a World Farm Animals Day celebration on Sunday.[Film Screening] Sunday, September 27th from 3pm to 5pm is a celebration of World Farm Animals Day at the Austin History Center. The documentary, “The Emotional World of Farm Animals” will be screened and a panel of guest speakers will discuss vegetarianism and the US meat industry. [Kid-Friendly] Sunday, September 27th from 3pm to 5pm the Camp Fire Backpacking Club is hosting an orientation at the downtown REI. Camp Fire is a youth development organization designed to connect children to the natural environment. The orientation will provide additional details about the organization, as well as information about basic backpacking techniques and gear. More info>>


[Zero Waste Meeting] Tuesday, September 29th from 7pm to 8:30pm the Austin Zero Waste Alliance is hosting its monthly meeting at Recycled Reads on Burnet Road. The guest speaker for the evening will be Shaun Auckland, senior conservation coordinator for Travis County. She will be talking about the county’s own zero waste efforts. The National Wildlife Federation is hosting a film screening on Wednesday.

[Film Screening] Wednesday, September 30th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm the National Wildlife Federation is hosting a cocktail reception and film screening of the documentary, “Flight of the Butterflies” at the Mexican American Cultural Center. The event is a fundraiser for the NWF so that it can continue its work restoring monarch habitats in Austin and across the country. More info>>


The Colorado River Alliance is hosting an open house next Thursday.[Volunteer] Thursday, October 1st from 10:30am to 11:30am the Colorado River Alliance is hosting a volunteer open house at the LCRA Redbud Center on Lake Austin Boulevard. Attendees will learn about the many volunteer opportunities available with the Colorado River Alliance, including running their educational  science program.
