[Community Gardening] Saturday, May 23rd from 9am to 1pm the Sustainable Food Center is hosting a free Community Garden Leadership Training at its headquarters on East 17th Street. The workshop will teach attendees how to contribute to the economic, social, and environmental vitality of their neighborhoods by starting their own community gardens. [Habitat Talk] Saturday, May 23rd from 9:30am to 11am the National Wildlife Federation and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center are celebrating Gardening for Wildlife Month with a talk on summer gardening in Texas. Andrea DeLong-Amaya, director of horticulture at the Wildflower Center, will be sharing her own tips for helping plants make it through the hot summer months, as well as advice about the best heat-loving plants to buy. The talk will be held at the Discovery Hill Outdoor Learning Center on North Bluff Drive. More info>> 
 

Austin's Community Climate Plan is going to a council committee vote this Wednesday.[Council Meeting] Wednesday, May 27th from2pm to 4pm

Austin City Council's Open Space, Environment, and Sustainability Committee is discussing the new Austin Community Climate Plan.

The plan is a guidebook to set Austin on a path toward zero greenhouse emissions by 2050. Members of the committee that wrote the plan will be speaking, as well as the city's Chief Sustainability Officer, Lucia Athens. This makes the meeting an excellent opportunity to learn more about the plan itself, or to share your opinions about the plan with city council members. If the Open Space, Environment, and Sustainability Committee approves the plan, it will then move forward to seek approval from the full city councilMore info>>
 


The Austin Materials Marketplace will be the main topic of discussion at next week's Zero Waste Alliance meeting.[Zero Waste Meeting]Wednesday, May 27th from 7pm to 8:30pm the Austin Zero Waste Alliance is holding is monthly meeting at the new headquarters of the Texas Campaign for the Environment on Riverside Drive. Alden Larrick, the executive director of Ecology Action, will be the guest speaker for the evening. She'll be talking about the Austin Materials Marketplace, a joint effort between Ecology Action and the City of Austin to facilitate business-to-business reuse in Central Texas. More info>>

 

The Sustainable Food Center is hosting a healthy Indian food cooking class next Thursday evening.[Cooking Class] Thursday, May 28th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm the Sustainable Food Center is hosting a a healthy Indian food cooking class. Students will learn how to make quick, healthy, weeknight meals that fuse traditional Indian flavors with seasonal Central Texas ingredients. Recipes in the class will focus on gluten-free, vegetarian and low glycemic ingredients. Registration is required. More info>>
