Urban Roots is a youth development organization that uses food and farming to transform the lives of young people and inspire, engage, and nourish the community. We rely on volunteer support to help us maintain our farm. Volunteers help us with planting, harvesting, preparing produce for market, and whatever else needs to be done.
On Saturdays, Youth Farm Interns lead volunteers through the tasks for the day and talk about their experience in our program. Space is limited, so please RSVP using the link below.
We offer Weekly Volunteer Mornings from 8:30-11:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Community Volunteer Saturdays from 9:00-12:00. More information and a full calendar of opportunities can be found at http://www.urbanrootsatx.org/get-involved/volunteer/on-the-farm/volunteer-days/
For our weekly Farm Volunteer Mornings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, no RSVP is required. You may simply show up at the farm on these days at the designated time, and we will put you to work! No experience necessary; all training will be provided. The address is 7651 Delwau Lane, Austin, TX 78725. Please Note: These dates are for individuals and groups smaller than 5 people. If you would like to schedule a volunteer day for your group or organization, please email volunteer@urbanrootsatx.org.
All Farm Volunteers:
What to Wear & Bring: You will be working outside the entire time! Wear close-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and dress appropriately for the weather. We recommend sun screen for hot days. Bring a re-fillable water bottle. The farm has drinking water available, but we do not provide cups.
Age Requirement: Our minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old. Children 10-13 years old must be accompanied by an adult. All minors under 18 who are not accompanied by a parent/guardian must have a signed parental consent form on file with Urban Roots. Go to the following link to download the parental consent form for youth volunteers (form is in English and Spanish): http://www.urbanrootsatx.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Youth-Vol-Consent-Both.pdf
We work rain or shine! If it is scheduled to rain, the farm work must go on! We have a lot of fun on muddy and rainy days, so please still come help bring in the harvest. We will only cancel in the event of extremely heavy rain or a thunder and lightning storm over the farm. In the event of a cancellation (very rare) we will post it on our Volunteer Days page no later than the day before the scheduled volunteer day.
Groups: All groups with over 5 people must schedule to volunteer ahead of time for both the weekly Farm Volunteer Days and Community Volunteer Saturdays.
