[Festival] Saturday, April 18th from noon to 6pm is the Austin Earth Day Festival at the Historic Browning Hangar at Mueller. There will be local food trailers, a huge kids' zone, hands-on demonstrations, loads of exhibitors, guest speakers, and multi-cultural drumming acts. [Bug Talk] Saturday, April 18th from 2pm to 3:30pmthe Austin Public Library is hosting a presentation from Little Herds, an Austin nonprofit that educates people about the environmental benefits of utilizing bugs as a food source. They will talk about the common practice of eating bugs in other parts of the world and even share some Chocolate Chirp Cookies and Spicy Jamaican Jerk Crickets. The event is part of the library's Talk Green to Me sustainable living series and will be held at the Hampton Branch Library at Oak Hill. More info>>
[Celebration] Saturday, April 18th from 2:30pm to 5pm the St. David's Episcopal Church Environmental Guild is hosting a pre-Earth Day celebration and concert at the church. Throughout the day there will be environmental activities, food, and art displays. Then, at 4pm, the 35-voice St. David's Singers will present a concert of gospel music, spirituals, and environmentally-themed poetry in Bethell Hall. More info>>
[Climate Talk] Sunday, April 19th from noon to 1pm Anna Graybeal, co-founder of the Austin chapter of the Citizens' Climate Lobby, is giving a talk on climate change at the First Unitarian Universalist Church. Graybeal will spend the first part of her talk discussing the science behind climate change, before moving on to the solutions. Specifically, she will be talking about the rationale for putting a price on carbon and inviting people to get more involved with the Climate Lobby. The event is free and open to the public. [Earth Fair] Sunday, April 19th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm the Wildflower Church is having an Earth Day Fair at its campus on East Oltorf Street. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about beekeeping, solar panels, monarch butterflies, and electric cars, as well as more ways to preserve and protect the planet. There will also be lots of free kids' activities, including a bouncy house and art projects with recycled materials. The Austin EcoNetwork will be there as well, so stop stop by and say hi! [Garden Talk] Sunday, April 19th from 1pm to 2pm David Huebel of the Green Corn Project is giving a talk on organic gardening at the Faulk Central Library. Huebel will discuss the ways that the term "organic" is often over-used and misused, and will propose a firm definition for what constitutes organic food gardening. He will also lay out the steps Austinites can take to garden organically. The talk is part of the Austin Public Library's Talk Green to Me sustainable living series and is free and open to the public. More info>>
[Compost Talk] Sunday, April 19th from 2pm to 3pm Compost Pedallers CEO Dustin Fedako is giving a talk on composting and food waste at the Faulk Central Library. Fedako will be discussing the 500,000 pounds of organic waste that are thrown away every single day in Austin and sharing his own vision for using those food scraps to instead, grow a greener and more fertile city. [Community Gardening] Monday, April 20th from 6:30pm to 8pm the Sustainable Food Center is hosting a panel discussion on managing pests and invasives at community gardens. Guest speakers from Yard Farm, About Thyme nursery, and the Travis County Master Gardeners Association will be sharing insights from their own personal experiences and offering up advice on techniques to manage and prevent pests. [Earth Day Celebration]Wednesday, April 22nd from 6pm to 8pm is the Austin Public Library's Earth Day Celebration at the Carver Branch Library. Local green organizations will be on hand to discuss the work they do in the community and to offer up a range of hands-on activities. Attendees will have the chance to make their own seed balls, see a live honey bee colony, and snack on some edible insects. [Sustainability Showdown] Thursday, April 23rd from 7pm to 9pm the University of Texas at Austin is hosting the 2015 Sustainability Showdown at KLRU Studio 6A. Faculty from each of UT Austin’s 12 undergrad colleges will blend humor and sincerity in answering this question – What is sustainability to your discipline and why is your discipline MOST central to creating a more sustainable future? The winning faculty member, as determined by a live audience vote, will secure a $2,000 Sustainability Scholarship for their home school or college. More info>>
