The Complete Streets Policy, adopted in June of this year, helps to implement the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan by making Austin more connected, compact, green, and ultimately more livable and healthy. A “Complete Street” is:
- A connected street that serves all users and modes of transport
- Designed to benefit Austin’s sustainability and the environment
- Convenient and safe, beautiful, interesting, and comfortable
The development patterns of our city have made it car-centric. This policy seeks to update our approach to infrastructure, so that if you want to get to work, go to the store, head to school, or visit a park, you have real alternatives to driving to get where you need to go. It’s also an equity policy, ensuring that the elderly, children, the disabled, and people who can’t afford or choose not to drive have equal access to good transportation choices. Complete Streets allow all users to easily and safely get where they need to go.
If you want to share your vision for Austin’s walkability, biking, or urban design, or simply want to learn more about changes coming to your community’s streets, come attend the Complete Streets Community Workshop.
