Austin’s pilot program to capture household kitchen waste made the New York Times!

Austin’s pilot program for collecting organic waste from household kitchens made the New York Times! The program rolled out in select areas of Austin with the idea that the organic waste stream is a resource. Austin Resource Recovery’s Director,Bob Gedert, wants to capture the food waste stream to convert it into compost. The yard trimmings and kitchen scraps become Dillo Dirt for area gardens. The city has a zero waste goal of 90% waste diversion by 2040. Once this program is expanded to all of Austin—the city will be that much closer to its goal.
