FCCT presents: Sustainable Austin – Helping Things Grow in Your Own Backyard

November 23 @ 7:54 pm

The hunt for sustainable food continues in week III of the Funky Chicken Coop Tour's "The Ultimate Scavenger Hunt for the Sustainable Egg". Are you ready to start growing food in your backyard?  Learn about zero waste, compost, and community gardens. Get more information at: http://austincooptour.org/scavenger-hunt

Join Heather-Nicole Hoffman of Compost Coalition, and the librarians at Windsor Park Branch, 5833 Westminster Dr., Austin, TX, 78723.  Learn how to turn compost into food, and make Austin's zero waste goals happen, with a little help from you and your chickens.   Reduce waste and improve your soils, your food and your home.

Hands-on demos, information booths, maybe even some chickens in action!

1 pm – Recycle Right!.  What can go in your blue City recycling bin? Lids on or off? Phonebooks? Foil? How clean does it have to be? Austin Resource Recovery will be here with the answers.

2 pm – Community Gardens – find one near you or start your own. Meredith Gray, with the Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Community Gardens program, City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, will discuss how to find land, how to apply for City endorsement and how to partner with a nonprofit sponsor for your community garden.

3 pm – Composting 101 – an introduction to composting with Compost Coalition, plus learn about City of Austin programs, rebates and ordinances promoting recycling.
Check out the resources available at your library.

Explore ways you can support projects in your neighborhood.
