20 Mar B-Cycle sets a US bikeshare record!
Now that SXSW 2014 is packed up and things are returning to plain-old “weird” in Austin, we’ll be sharing important eco milestones that the event inspired. It was a rough time for the event this year, but we’re thrilled to share bright spots in several eco-incubator initiatives where new ideas are tested amongst the coolest, early adopters from the US and abroad.
B-Cycle set a US bikeshare record during SXSW 2014!
You won’t believe these numbers:
- 17,724 checkouts totaling 22,744 miles pedaled during the 10-day festival
- Each bike averaged 6.4 checkouts per day
- On Friday, March 15th, Austin’s B-Cycle outperformed NYC’s Citibike program with 2, 774 checkouts for an average of 10.1 checkouts per bike/day (the record was previously held at 7.2 buke/day)!
“It’s clear that SXSW attendees love Austin B-cycle,” said Austin B-cycle Executive Director Elliott McFadden. “When SXSW Interactive, Film, and Music badge holders needed to hop from venue to venue, they chose Austin B-cycle in overwhelming numbers. Not only are we thrilled by how attendees embraced our system, we are impressed by how well the B-cycle bikes, stations, and software held up to the high usage. I also want to thank our stellar B-cycle staff for all their hard work, putting in over 12-hour days each day making sure the system ran smoothly.”
B-Cycle is win-win-win! Their hashtag #poweredbytacos humorously points to the carbon savings but the savings is no joke. Can you imagine how congested Austin would’ve been with that many more cars popping around? B-Cycle built community, gave conference goers a bit of exercise and delivered outstanding service to Austin visitors, ensuring our place as a green minded city.
