Community Trees in Dove Springs

September 30 @ 1:32 am

Basic Info

Date:
September 30, 2024
Time:
1:32 am

The City of Austin gives free trees to one neighborhood each year, with low tree canopies, to mitigate the urban heat island affect, with an emphasis on correct planting, and tree adoption.  This year the SE Neighborhood, or Dove Springs received it!  Yay!

Our next meeting is Wedsday the 14th at 6pm at the SE Branch Library.  I hope you can make it!

In this meeting we will be talking about:

1) Types of Trees to be Offered: The ACT Program will be offering several trees, in both Small and Large sizes.  We should be able to on Wednesday, talk about tree species to be offered.  What is your favorite kind of Texas tree?

2) Food donations for the Volunteer Days: We will be needing food donations for the 3 volunteer dates in September, October, and November. Do you know a generous business that might donate food for our volunteers?

3) Sector leaders and areas to be covered: I'm happy to report we have leaders for 15 sections in the ACT area,  but we still have around 30 areas that need leaders.  Do you know a neighbor who may be interested in planting trees on their street/area?  Bring them to the meeting!

4) School and Apartment Complex leaders: Lets make sure that our schools and apartment complexes are well shaded. Do you want to be a leader for your school or apartment complex?

5) Promoting the ACT program at your school, church, or organization: A big part of this program is letting people know that they can get FREE TREES for their yards!  Let people know about the program, how they can get free trees and volunteer, and also, how to care for their young trees.

The addition of trees can cool daytime temperatures in neighborhoods. The ACT program is offered free to eligible neighborhoods and is a partnership among neighborhoods, the Planning and Development Review Department, Parks and Recreation Department and Austin Energy.

ACT offers between 8 and 10 different species of large shade and small understory trees. Trees can be planted on private property and not in a designated public right of way. This program seeks to encourage biodiversity through a varied tree palate, and stresses the importance of planting the right tree in the right place (i.e. small, understory trees are planted near utility lines). Program participants have included the following planning areas: Central East Austin, Crestview and Wooten, East Cesar Chavez, Old West Austin, Rosewood, South Congress Combined and Montopolis.
