SUMMARY:Free Gardening Seminar - The Selection\, Planting and Care of your Trees
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Travis County Master Gardener Association –\nGet ready for tree planting season! There are many types of trees\, such as ornamental or fruit trees\, understory or large shade trees\, deciduous or evergreen trees\, that will thrive in Central Texas. Matching a tree’s characteristics and growing requirements with your personal preferences is the first step to successfully adding or replacing trees that will increase the value of your property and bring you enjoyment for many years. \nPlease join Master Gardener Jerry Naiser as he takes you through the steps of selecting\, planting and caring for your trees. Planting the tree in the right season\, ideally between October and April here in Central Texas\, allows the tree’s roots to grow and get established before the heat of the summer is upon us. \nProviding care immediately upon planting and regular preventive maintenance ensures the tree’s successful development and growth. Regular inspections\, pruning\, mulching\, and fertilizing will catch problems early and provide the environment for a tree’s long and healthy\nlifetime. \nNo registration is required.  Attendance to the seminars is free and open to the public. A park entrance fee is required.\nThe Austin Area Garden Center in Zilker Botanical Garden is located at 2220 Barton Springs Rd.\, Austin 78746.  The fees are $2 per adult\, $1 per child (ages 3-12) or seniors (age 62 & over)\, and $3 for non-Austin Residents. DESCRIPTION:From the Travis County Master Gardeners Association –\nTake a trip to gardens around the world without even leaving Austin.  Please join Dr. Molly Ogorzaly as she contrasts Western and Eastern gardening traditions and explains how religious beliefs influenced the conception and construction of Japanese gardens. \nDr. Ogorzaly\, who holds degrees in agriculture\, botany and science education\, will share design principles and identify adapted plants that can be used in Central Texas. These designs and plants are featured in Austin’s Taniguchi Japanese Garden\, which opened in 1969 and was built by Isamu Taniguch. In his essay\, Spirit of the Garden\, Taniguchi shares his motivation in building the garden and his wish that “through the construction of this visible garden\, I might provide a symbol of universal peace.” \nThis great gift to the city is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.  Over these many years\, visitors have enjoyed a tranquil\, meditative spot in the middle of Zilker Botanical Garden. \nNo registration is required.  Attendance to the seminars is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Monarch Appreciation Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin –\n\n\n\nMonarch butterflies\, and their fascinating story of migration\, will provide the focus for a day of festivities at Zilker Botanical Garden during Monarch Appreciation Day on Saturday\, October 21\, from 9 am – 4 pm. \nThe event highlights the importance of pollinators\, and attendees will learn how they can help by increasing or improving the habitat they provide at their own homes. In addition\, there will be a variety of Monarch- and pollinator-themed programming to entertain everyone. Planned activities include: \n\nButterfly releases will be conducted 3 times throughout the day: at 11 am\, 1 pm\, and 3 pm.\n\n\nEye-to-Eye with the Monarch – Guests can enter and walk through a special butterfly tent to observe Monarchs and other butterflies up close.\n\n\nAustin Bike Zoo – See the giant\, playful\, interactive\, hand-built 13 foot tall Monarch butterfly bicycle. This is FREE with admission. \nAdditional offerings at the event will include hands-on children’s activities\, face painting\, activities and information from a variety of partner organizations. \nParking and Admission:\nParking at the Garden is limited. Visitors are encouraged to park in the overflow lot at the back of the Garden on Stratford Drive (2300 Stratford Dr. 78746) and enter through the Butterfly Gate directly into the Butterfly Garden. In case the lot is unavailable due to delays in ACL take down\, parking is also available across Barton Springs Rd. in the Zilker Polo Fields. \nAdmission fees are $3 for adults who do not live in the City of Austin\, $2 for Austin residents\, and $1 for seniors 62 and over and for children ages 3-12. Children under 3 are free. \nThe Zilker Botanical Garden is an oasis within Zilker Park\, located on Barton Springs Road. The Garden is open year-round with the exception of New Year’s Day\, Thanksgiving Day\, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Current Garden hours are 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily\, and will shift to winter hours of 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily on November 5\, 2017.
