SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Resource Recovery –\nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your blender suddenly stop working? Is your child’s toy a little worse for the wear? Bring these items and more to the Fix-It Clinic where volunteer coaches with repair know-how will be available to teach you how to fix your item. \nFix-It Clinics are all about do-it-together hands-on disassembly\, troubleshooting and repair knowledge. Fix-It Clinic attendees are expected to be active participants in trying to fix their items with guidance from our coaches. Attendees should plan to stay with their items. Dropping off of items for repair will not be permitted. \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, you can learn how to fix almost anything! Including: \n\nClothing\nJewelry\nAccessories\nToys\nSmall Appliances\nElectronics\n\nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nChoose your ticket based on the item(s) you plan to bring and when you’ll arrive. If the ticket you are looking for is sold out\, though we can’t guarantee availability of our coaches\, you are welcome to come to the clinic with your item and we will do our best to accommodate you. \nIn order to ensure an effective\, fair\, and fun event\, attendees have a limit of two items for repair per visit. If time permits and if there are Fixit Coaches available to assist in the repair\, attendees can then work to repair additional items. The two item limit ensures that Fixit Clinics remain community events focused on sharing repair knowledge with the greatest number of people. \nInterested in hosting a Fix-It Clinic? We’ll also have copies of our How to Host a Fix-It Clinic guide available along with staff to answer questions about partnering with us to promote an event. \nWhat to bring: Your broken stuff and a desire to learn how to fix it! Sewing machines and other tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own machines and tools if you prefer. If you have a replacement part\, missing button\, a fabric patch\, matching thread\, etc. that you suspect might help you fix your item\, please bring it with you. \nInterested in being a volunteer coach? SUMMARY:Talk Green to Me Book Club: The Genius of Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:From the Talk Green to Me Book Club –\nJoin us every 4th Thursday from 7pm – 8pm at Recycled Reads for an environmental and sustainability themed reading extravaganza! \nThe book that will be discussed is\, “The Genius of Earth Day: How a 1970 Teach-In Unexpectedly Made the First Green Generation.” \nAbout the Genius of Earth Day: \nThe first Earth Day is the most famous little-known event in modern American history. Because we still pay ritual homage to the planet every April 22\, everyone knows something about Earth Day. Some people may also know that Earth Day 1970 made the environmental movement a major force in American political life. But no one has told the whole story before. \nThe story of the first Earth Day is inspiring: it had a power\, a freshness\, and a seriousness of purpose that are difficult to imagine today. Earth Day 1970 created an entire green generation. Thousands of Earth Day organizers and participants decided to devote their lives to the environmental cause. Earth Day 1970 helped to build a lasting eco-infrastructure—lobbying organizations\, environmental beats at newspapers\, environmental-studies programs\, ecology sections in bookstores\, community ecology centers. \nIn The Genius of Earth Day\, the prizewinning historian Adam Rome offers a compelling account of the rise of the environmental movement. Drawing on his experience as a journalist as well as his expertise as a scholar\, he explains why the first Earth Day was so powerful\, bringing one of the greatest political events of the twentieth century to life.

SUMMARY:Talk Green to Me Book Club: Don't Even Think About It
DESCRIPTION:From the Talk Green to Me Book Club –\nJoin us every 4th Thursday from 7pm – 8pm at Recycled Reads for an environmental and sustainability themed reading extravaganza! In February we’re reading “Don’t Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change” by George Marshall \nMost of us recognize that climate change is real yet we do nothing to stop it. What is the psychological mechanism that allows us to know something is true but act as if it is not? George Marshall’s search for the answers brings him face to face with Nobel Prize–winning psychologists and Texas Tea Party activists; the world’s leading climate scientists and those who denounce them; liberal environmentalists and conservative evangelicals. What he discovers is that our values\, assumptions\, and prejudices can take on lives of their own\, gaining authority as they are shared\, dividing people in their wake. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Talk Green to Me Book Club: Collapse by Jared Diamond
DESCRIPTION:From the Talk Green to Me Book Club –\nIn Jared Diamond’s follow-up to the Pulitzer-Prize winning “Guns\, Germs and Steel\,” the author explores how climate change\, the population explosion\, and political discord create the conditions for the collapse of civilization. \nEnvironmental damage\, climate change\, globalization\, rapid population growth\, and unwise political choices were all factors in the demise of societies around the world\, but some found solutions and persisted. As in “Guns\, Germs\, and Steel\,” Diamond traces the fundamental pattern of catastrophe\, and weaves an all-encompassing global thesis through a series of fascinating historical-cultural narratives. \nCollapse moves from the Polynesian cultures on Easter Island to the flourishing American civilizations of the Anasazi and the Maya and finally to the doomed Viking colony on Greenland. Similar problems face us today and have already brought disaster to Rwanda and Haiti\, even as China and Australia are trying to cope in innovative ways. Despite our own society’s apparently inexhaustible wealth and unrivaled political power\, ominous warning signs have begun to emerge even in ecologically robust areas like Montana. \nJoin us at Recycled Reads for an environmental and sustainability themed reading extravaganza!

SUMMARY:Talk Green to Me Book Club: Now or Never
DESCRIPTION:From the Talk Green to Me Book Club –\nIn Now or Never\, the internationally acclaimed author of The Weather Makers returns to the subject of climate change with a book that is at once a forceful call to action and a deeply (and often surprisingly) pragmatic roadmap toward sustainability. Utilizing the most up-to-the-minute data available\, Tim Flannery offers a guided tour of the environmental challenges we face and their potential solutions in both the big picture and in specific detail. He explores everything from techniques for storing the carbon that dead plants release into the earth to the fragile balancing act between energy demands and food supply in India and China\, from carbon-trading schemes in South America to a recent collaboration between a Danish wind-energy company and an automobile manufacturer that may produce a viable electric car and end the reign of big oil. \nJoin us every 4th Thursday from 7pm – 8pm at Recycled Reads for an environmental and sustainability themed reading extravaganza!
