SUMMARY:Understanding How Data Centers Impact Texas
DESCRIPTION:Keaton Peters will present on how data centers affect the power grid. He will explore questions that have come up in his extensive reporting on this topic. How much power will data centers need\, and how are they trying to get it? Who pays for new power infrastructure? How do data centers use water? What has happened when data centers move in near residential areas? And what could happen if the stock market’s ‘AI bubble’ starts to burst? The presentation will explain why these questions matter and provide unbiased facts that will allow anyone joining to come to their own well-informed conclusions. \nKeaton Peters is an energy reporter for Straight Arrow News. He brings a narrative-driven flair to energy coverage after spending several years as a freelance journalist. His first spark of interest in journalism came when Peters was a copy editor for his undergraduate student newspaper at the University of California at Berkeley during a period of rigorous debate about the role of the media and free speech on campus. His interests were forged into serious journalistic know-how as a reporting fellow with the Texas Tribune in 2023. Since then\, his freelance work has run in numerous online publications\, newspapers and magazines including Texas Monthly and High Country News. In 2025\, he was recognized as an energy journalism fellow by Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy\, which selected him as one of 20 up-and-coming reporters around the world. \nOriginally from a tiny mountain town in Alpine County\, California\, Peters now reports from Austin\, Texas\, where he earned a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. Outside of the newsroom\, he plays guitar in a local rock band\, runs marathons\, bakes sourdough bread and enjoys spending free time with his wife and their cats.

SUMMARY:Virtual Open House: East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Join the City of Austin for a virtual open house on the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative. At this public meeting\, City staff will provide an update on the project\, review the timeline\, and gather your feedback. Spanish interpretation will be provided (Se proporcionará interpretación en español durante el evento de la noche). You can RSVP for the zoom link here. \nThe East Riverside Corridor Master Plan and Regulating Plan\, adopted in 2010 and 2013\, respectively\, regulate land use in the East Riverside area. In the last decade\, the area has experienced significant growth and investment\, and the corridor will be transformed by a light rail line currently being designed as part of Project Connect. In 2024\, Austin City Council passed Resolution 20240201-054\, directing staff to align the East Riverside Corridor Plan with the City’s Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) initiative. Updating the plan is necessary to ensure that it works with the new transit line that is coming\, supports equitable outcomes\, and reflects the evolving needs of the community. \nThe purpose of the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative\, which includes an update to the Vision Plan and Regulating Plan\, is to guide the growth and redevelopment of the East Riverside Corridor and to ensure that future changes in the corridor benefit everyone who lives\, works\, and plays along the corridor. Our planning efforts focus on equitable\, transit-oriented\, and walkable development\, and support the inclusion of sustainable practices\, diversity\, maintaining a mix of housing options for various income levels\, improving active transportation and transit accessibility\, and encouraging a wide range of amenities for the community to enjoy. This plan update will ensure that the current and future needs of the community are accounted for\, and the City can facilitate public and private investments in the corridor area. \nThis planning initiative will identify important actions that the City\, property owners\, and the community can take to implement the vision for the East Riverside Corridor. The Vision Plan will offer recommendations concerning planning\, zoning\, and development. It will also include equitable strategies for small business and workforce development\, housing affordability\, mobility\, land use and urban design\, and real estate and financing strategies. The Regulating Plan will define development standards and guidelines for connectivity\, urban design\, safety\, and infrastructure improvements.
