DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\n\n\n\nMost people never think twice about their trash; they just throw it “away.” But there is no “away\,” and across Texas—and right here in Austin—communities being dumped on or exploited by the waste industry are rising up to demand changes to a system rigged in favor of multinational garbage corporations. Trash is choking our oceans and our land but there is real hope and action available to us.  Hear more about what you can do to support the fight for a Zero Waste future!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker:\nAndrew Dobbs is the Legislative Director and Program Director for Texas Campaign for the Environment\, where he’s worked for over 8 years. He is originally from North Texas.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Public Affairs Forum \nThe Public Affairs Forum is held at 12 noon on most Sundays in the Sanctuary at First UU\, sponsor of the forum. The church is located at 4700 Grover. These one-hour forums are open to the public and admission is free. \nForums include lectures by prominent speakers on a wide variety of topics – social equity\, politics\, environmental issues\, science\, community action initiatives\, and others. Most forum events allow time for the audience to ask questions of the speaker. The presentation is videotaped\, edited and broadcast on ChannelAustin TV cable channel 10 at 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Join us on the third Tuesday of each month at First UU Church.\nWe’ll share updates on our current campaigns\, discuss climate change issues\, and learn about ways to get involved in the fossil-free revolution. \nAlthough the IPCC’s report that we have twelve years to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% is rather dire\, we actually know that this consensus-generated report very likely underestimates how rapidly global economic changes must occur if we are to avoid exceeding the 1.5 C of warming that may already be locked in. Since the release of the IPCC report in October\, reports from other institutions in the last two weeks support 350 Austin’s position that time is running out faster than has been broadly publicized. \nAt this month’s meeting\, 350 Austin co-founder Gil Starkey will be providing an update on the status of the climate crisis\, including a report on COP 24. As a member of the Board of Directors\, Gil will also be updating us on the Board’s directive in responding to the climate crisis. Co-founder Bobbie Tsukahara will then discuss the role that non-violent direct action (NVDA) will need to play in our campaigns beginning in 2019. \nDespite the doom and gloom\, we intend to make time to enjoy one another’s company as we share holiday treats. \nPlan to arrive early as we have a lot of ground to cover and want to be sure we have time for merry munching! \nPlease bring holiday finger-foods and drinks to share\, keeping in mind that we still do not have access to the church kitchen. \nAbout 350 Austin  \nWe are a local affiliate of 350.org\, a grassroots organization that is building a global climate movement. Solar Austin\, 350 Austin\, Earth Day Austin\, Shades of Green\, and the Green Sanctuary Ministry of the First Unitarian Universalist Church are hosting a forum for mayoral candidates to speak to Austinites about their climate change and energy priorities. \nPlease join us to hear from Mayor Steve Adler\, Laura Morrison\, Travis Duncan\, and Alex Strenger. We will have prepared questions and will accept questions from the audience. \nCandidates are required to respond to a written questionnaire in order to participate and those responses will be posted here when we get them.

SUMMARY:Green for a Reason with Catherine O’Toole
DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\nAfter a very serious cancer diagnosis\, Catherine investigated who got cancer and why. It was during that research she came across the toxic chemicals that are in the everyday products used to build\, furnish and decorate our homes. Catherine’s mission is to educate the public on how home furnishings and building products contribute to serious health issues such as cancer\, infertility\, and asthma (to name a few). Along with bringing awareness of the toxic chemicals in products\, Catherine will present easy tips and alternative options to create a healthier home. \nCatherine hails from Ireland and before starting Green For A Reason\, she had a 10-year career in the fashion industry in New York City. She is a believer in\, “do what you love\, and everything else will fall into place.” In her 30s\, Catherine left corporate America and backpacked around the world by herself for three years. While traveling she met a Texas “Prince Charming.”

This was the biggest coordinated move on energy infrastructure ever taken by environmental activists. They were responding to the call for International Days of Action and Prayer for solidarity with standing rock. She will share her priorities over the coming year as CodeNEXT goes through its myriad stages\, the Council chooses a new City Manager\, and the City attempts to navigate the challenging road ahead\, from the impacts on the climate that traffic and development have to where Austin stands in today’s politics. \nBio: \nCouncil Member Alison Alter is a small business owner\, a former professor\, a community connector\, and an environmental advocate. She is honored to represent District 10 and the City of Austin. \nCouncil Member Alter has over 20 years of experience working in nonprofits\, higher education and through public-private partnerships. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government at Harvard University and her B.A. in Public Policy from Stanford University. In 2013\, Dr. Alter launched her own philanthropic advising business\, Alter Advising\, helping individuals\, families\, and foundations to increase the effectiveness of their giving and to transform their philanthropic experiences. \nBefore her election\, Council Member Alter chaired the We LOVE Ramsey Park renovation campaign. She is proud to have brought together a coalition of neighbors\, families\, businesses\, several City of Austin departments\, and local non-profits to transform Ramsey Park into a park where people of all ages can play\, gather\, and grow together year-around. They also released the report Deadline 2020: How cities will get the job done which outlines the scale and scope of actions needed if we hope to avert more than a +1.5C global temperature rise. Come learn about the big picture\, what Austin is doing\, and what you can do to help ensure a climate safe future. \nMexico City hosted the sixth biennial C40 Mayors Summit\, November 30  – December 2\, 2016.  The Summit brought together C40 mayors from all over the world and hundreds of urban and sustainability leaders to advance urban solutions to climate change and highlight the leadership role of cities in addressing climate change. \nThe event featured a series of roundtable discussions and working sessions on city driven climate actions and their impact; the discussions were data-driven and outcome focused. DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church –\nHelp Lift the Burden of America’s Fossil Fuel Dependence \nTo view trailer:  http://www.theburdenfilm.com \nPutting Our Troops in Harm’s Way — The US military uses more oil than any other organization in the world.  Everything from tanks to fighter jets to Humvees to generators use oil. Delivering that oil on the battlefield is a dangerous job.  In Afghanistan\, every 1 in 24 fuel convoys ended with a casualty. \nGlobal Supply is Vulnerable — Oil is bought and sold globally\, and those trade routes are vulnerable.  Most of the world’s oil travels through two or three major chokepoints\, easy targets for terrorists and adversarial nations that border these narrow sea lanes. \nIt’s Expensive to Secure and Protect Oil — While we may not pay the full cost at the pump\, securing and protecting oil is very expensive.  Our military spends approximately $300 billion annually just to protect the oil chokepoints\, and hundreds of billions more to help stabilize oil-producing regions around the world. Military experts project that if we were paying the full cost at the pump rather than through the taxpayer money DoD uses for these missions\, one gallon of gas would exceed $8. \nFunding Our Enemies — Too much of our oil money ends up in the hands of countries that don’t share our values and violent groups working to do us harm.  Oil money has been traced\, often through shady front groups\, to extremist and terrorist groups. Global demand sets the price on the global market\, so no matter where our oil comes from\, our high demand keeps more money flowing to our enemies. \nPrice Shocks Pose a Threat to Military Performance — Volatile oil price spikes force the military to repurpose funds away from training\, maintenance\, and readiness programs to offset the cost – putting the mission at risk.  This means our sailors steam less\, our pilots fly less\, and our soldiers and Marines train less. On the battlefield\, special forces and other elite units spend disproportionate time on convoy detail and less on counterinsurgency and other critical operations. \nFossil Fuels Exacerbate Natural Disasters — Fossil fuel consumption is linked to an increase in extreme weather events that directly impact our military readiness.  Our military is the best first responder in the world\, receiving a foreign disaster relief request every two weeks\, which comes at great cost to U.S. taxpayers. Limiting the environmental challenges linked to carbon emissions will save money and place less stress on an already over-extended military. \nClean Energy Jobs for Veterans — A high percentage of veterans are working in the clean energy industry because they saw first hand how our oil dependence militarily and as a nation create excessive costs in lives and money.  Combat veterans understand that clean energy is patriotic\, and view their work in this industry as an extension of their service to securing continued American prosperity.

SUMMARY:"Citizen Action on Climate: The Planet Needs YOU"
DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church –\nCurrent trends in climate change are\, as President Obama put it\, “terrifying”.  What are we\, as citizens and inhabitants of the planet\, to do?  Anna Graybeal\, PhD\, will present one set of answers by discussing her volunteer work with the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL)\, a nonpartisan nonprofit group working to pass federal legislation for a steadily-rising fee on carbon.  Dr. Graybeal will give an overview of the policy\, an update on the progress CCL has made in Congress\, and outline how volunteers can help out both locally and nationally. You will even be able to take action at the presentation by writing a postcard to your member of Congress that CCL will hand-deliver to the appropriate office in DC. \nThis event is part of the First Unitarian Universalist Church’s ongoing Public Affairs Forum series. All of them are free and open to the public. \nAnna Graybeal received a Bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of California at Berkeley. She moved to Austin for a post-doc\, but began to realize that she wanted to switch fields: she then earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Texas at Austin\, and has been in private practice in Austin ever since. She first learned about global warming at Berkeley\, and has become increasingly concerned about the rapid changes we are seeing. Along with a co-leader\, she started the Austin chapter of the volunteer-based organized Citizens’ Climate Lobby several years ago as a way to get involved in taking action on this challenging problem.

SUMMARY:Karen Kocher: “What is the Value of Barton Springs?”
DESCRIPTION:Documentary media producer\, Karen Kocher\, will be showing excepts from Living Spring\, a documentary series about the history\, science\, culture\, and spiritual practices at Barton Springs. She will frame the screening with the discussion\, “What is the value of Barton Springs?”   For the past 10 years\, she has been creating media work for digital platforms and studying the ways that the digital technology is expanding the documentary genre. \nCurrently Ms. Kocher is developing Living Springs\, a media-rich website about the culture\, history\, and science of Barton Springs Pool. The website will engage young adult and adult learners in an interactive exploration of Barton Springs in Austin\, Texas to foster greater understanding of how the natural environment helps to define human culture. Portions of the web site will be developed into interactive exhibits at the Beverly Sheffield Education Center. \nIn conjunction with The Texas Environmental Center\, Kocher worked as an instructional designer and associate producer on Barton Springs Interactive\, a CD-ROM based documentary about the history\, culture and science of Barton Springs in Austin\, Texas. This CD-ROM has been distributed to schools and is also on permanent display in the SPLASH! exhibit at Barton Springs\, a science exhibit that is visited by thousands of school children each year. \nMs. Kocher has been teaching documentary production and digital post-production for the Department of Radio\, Television and Film at the University of Texas at Austin since 1998. She has also been invited to teach short course documentary workshops as part of the UT Austin/Portugal CoLab in Lisbon\, Portugal and Porto\, Portugal. In the summer of 2010\, Ms. Kocher will teach a course in Video Poetry at the world-renowned Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Colorado.

If an “Inconvenient Truth” was about what causes climate change\, this film is about what are the effects of climate change on our civilization. \nWith contributions from several politicians\, scientists\, and environmental activists\, including John Kerry\, Newt Gingrich\, Al Gore\, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai\, the film documents the human plight of climate change with a focus on the intersection of overpopulation\, lack of resources and climatic change. Filmmaker Michael Nash and producing partner Justin Hogan traveled to 48 countries in search of the human face of climate change. \nThe movie screening is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\nThe Buddha identified appamada\, typically translated as “diligent care\,” as the chief good or highest virtue in his teaching and practice. He likened appamada to the elephant’s footprint—just as the feet of all creatures fit into the elephant’s footprint\, so do all virtues fit into the most comprehensive good of all\, diligent care. This is also a virtue that Jesus of Nazareth embodied and taught—an active and diligent love and care for others\, especially the excluded and most vulnerable. It is a virtue that many people are articulating today—an active and diligent care for the earth. Tom VandeStadt will share how we can draw from both the Buddhist and Judeo-Christian traditions in our own care for the earth. \nTom VandeStadt is the pastor of the Congregational Church of Austin\, United Church of Christ\, and a student at Appamada Zen Center in Austin Texas. He has served on the Board of the Interfaith Environmental Network of Austin\, and is currently a member of Austin Interfaith. \n

CM Pool will have just returned from the global climate change conference in Paris. \nCouncil Member Pool was sworn into Austin City Council on Jan. 6\, 2015. \nPrior to becoming the elected representative for District 7\, Council Member Pool served in the Travis County Constable’s Office\, volunteered on the board of Liveable City\, and was a co-founder of the Bull Creek Road Coalition\, an affiliation of seven neighborhoods and a stakeholder group in the sale and development of state-owned property along Bull Creek Road. \nPrior to going to work for Travis County\, Council Member Pool worked at the National Wildlife Federation\, the Texas Department of Transportation\, and served in the offices of U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett and the late U.S. Sen.
