SUMMARY:Climate Feedback Loops Program: Three Films and a Panel Discussion with Local Climate Organizations' Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the Sierra Club’s monthly Climate Crisis Committee meeting\, which is open to everyone and will also be available on Zoom\, we’ll plunge into feedback loops and tipping points\, processes that could dramatically accelerate global warming. That these processes have started is clear but when they might hit critical levels is a big unknown.\n \nLast year\, a series of five short educational films about Feedback Loops was introduced in a program with Greta Thunberg and the Dalai Lama. At this introduction\, Greta said\, “We cannot solve the climate emergency without taking these feedback loops into account and without really understanding them. That is a crucial step.”\n \nAt our Climate Crisis Committee Meeting on July 5\, we will watch three of these films (total 45 minutes)\, the ones on the Tundra\, Albedo\, and Forests. Following the films\, local climate leaders will discuss their reactions to these films\, why (and whether) understanding feedback loops is important to climate activists\, and how their particular organizations can use this information in their work. We will conclude with a whole group discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Sierra Club\, Public Citizen Texas\, the Austin Environmental Justice Team\, Extinction Rebellion ATX\, and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas –\nJoin community members from the Rio Grande Valley and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas for a dinner and panel discussion to learn more and take action to stop the fracked gas expansion near South Padre Island\, defend sacred indigenous sites\, and protect communities from environmental racism! \nFor years\, community members and activists have been organizing in the Rio Grande Valley to stop the construction of the Texas LNG export terminal and two other fracked gas projects. \nA lot is at stake in this fight! If the proposed Texas LNG terminal is built\, it would destroy the Garcia Pasture\, a historical indigenous site home to sacred burial grounds and a village. The project would also pollute nearby communities with known hazardous chemicals and irreparably destroy the habitat for endangered species\, like the ocelot. \nWe can stop all of this destruction. Dr. Elkins’s research and teaching is in environmental health and healthy indoor environments. Join us on the third Tuesday of each month at First UU Church.\nWe’ll share updates on our current campaigns\, discuss climate change issues\, and learn about ways to get involved in the fossil-free revolution. \nAlthough the IPCC’s report that we have twelve years to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% is rather dire\, we actually know that this consensus-generated report very likely underestimates how rapidly global economic changes must occur if we are to avoid exceeding the 1.5 C of warming that may already be locked in. Since the release of the IPCC report in October\, reports from other institutions in the last two weeks support 350 Austin’s position that time is running out faster than has been broadly publicized. \nAt this month’s meeting\, 350 Austin co-founder Gil Starkey will be providing an update on the status of the climate crisis\, including a report on COP 24. As a member of the Board of Directors\, Gil will also be updating us on the Board’s directive in responding to the climate crisis. Co-founder Bobbie Tsukahara will then discuss the role that non-violent direct action (NVDA) will need to play in our campaigns beginning in 2019. \nDespite the doom and gloom\, we intend to make time to enjoy one another’s company as we share holiday treats. \nPlan to arrive early as we have a lot of ground to cover and want to be sure we have time for merry munching! \nPlease bring holiday finger-foods and drinks to share\, keeping in mind that we still do not have access to the church kitchen. \nAbout 350 Austin  \nWe are a local affiliate of 350.org\, a grassroots organization that is building a global climate movement. DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\nAfter a very serious cancer diagnosis\, Catherine investigated who got cancer and why. It was during that research she came across the toxic chemicals that are in the everyday products used to build\, furnish and decorate our homes. Catherine’s mission is to educate the public on how home furnishings and building products contribute to serious health issues such as cancer\, infertility\, and asthma (to name a few). Along with bringing awareness of the toxic chemicals in products\, Catherine will present easy tips and alternative options to create a healthier home. \nCatherine hails from Ireland and before starting Green For A Reason\, she had a 10-year career in the fashion industry in New York City. She is a believer in\, “do what you love\, and everything else will fall into place.” In her 30s\, Catherine left corporate America and backpacked around the world by herself for three years. While traveling she met a Texas “Prince Charming.”

DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church –\nOn October 11\, 2016\, five brave climate activists shook the North American energy industry when they closed safety valves on the 5 pipelines carrying tar sands crude oil into the United States. This was the biggest coordinated move on energy infrastructure ever taken by environmental activists. They were responding to the call for International Days of Action and Prayer for solidarity with standing rock. Agua Dulce Farm is Austin’s premier grower and supplier of fresh salad greens\, herbs and fish – serving many of Austin’s favorite restaurants\, farmers’ markets and grocery stores. Mr. Hanan and Agua Dulce Farm has been featured in National Geographic \nDriven by a passion to help people live healthier and happier lives and to improve the sustainability of our food and agriculture systems\, he has been working on the front lines of urban agriculture in Austin for the past 5 years – first\, as Co-Founder of Ten Acre Organics and\, most recently\, as CEO of Agua Dulce Farm. Agua Dulce develops\, employs and demonstrates the most efficient methods of Organic growing\, including aquaponics and controlled environment agriculture. \nAbout the Public Affairs Forum \nThe Public Affairs Forum is held at 12 noon on most Sundays in the Sanctuary at First UU\, sponsor of the forum. The church is located at 4700 Grover. These one-hour forums are open to the public and admission is free. \nForums include lectures by prominent speakers on a wide variety of topics – social equity\, politics\, environmental issues\, science\, community action initiatives\, and others. Most forum events allow time for the audience to ask questions of the speaker. The presentation is videotaped\, edited and broadcast on ChannelAustin TV cable channel 10 at 6 p.m. on Sundays.

DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center and the Austin Playback Theatre –\nWe have partnered with Austin Playback Theatre to present “The Flavor of Memory” on Tuesday\, November 7th at 7pm at The First Universalist Church on Grover Street. This live improvisational performance features actors playing back stories elicited from the audience. \nEach month\, Austin Playback Theatre features a local nonprofit organization and donates all proceeds to that organization. Working in collaboration with the First Unitarian Universalist Church on Grover Street\, who is providing the performance space at no charge\, 100% of donations at the door go to the featured organization. \nJoin us and come see your food memories come to life! The performance is free to the public\, a suggested donation of $7-$15 at the door go directly to Sustainable Food Center.

DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church –\nLuke Metzger is founding director of Environment Texas\, a statewide\, citizen-funded advocacy group for clean air\, clean water\, and open spaces. He has been involved in dozens of citizen-related environmental campaigns and regularly testifies before the Texas Legislature on environmental issues. His interviews and articles have appeared in the New York Times\, USA Today\, on MSNBC\, and elsewhere. \n“Capitol Inside” named him one of the “Top Lobbyists for Causes\,” and he has received the President’s Award from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society for his work to protect Texas parks. Currently he serves as a Commissioner on the Austin Resource Management Commission. DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church Public Affairs Forum –\nPresentation Description: \nCouncil Member Alter’s unique perspective as a relatively new resident of the city\, combined with her background in public policy\, allows her to take a fresh approach to our City’s longstanding challenges. In this presentation\, Council Member Alter will discuss her first few months on the Council and the promise of the 10-1 Council to better serve the City. She will share her priorities over the coming year as CodeNEXT goes through its myriad stages\, the Council chooses a new City Manager\, and the City attempts to navigate the challenging road ahead\, from the impacts on the climate that traffic and development have to where Austin stands in today’s politics. \nBio: \nCouncil Member Alison Alter is a small business owner\, a former professor\, a community connector\, and an environmental advocate. She is honored to represent District 10 and the City of Austin. \nCouncil Member Alter has over 20 years of experience working in nonprofits\, higher education and through public-private partnerships. She earned her Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government at Harvard University and her B.A. in Public Policy from Stanford University. In 2013\, Dr. Alter launched her own philanthropic advising business\, Alter Advising\, helping individuals\, families\, and foundations to increase the effectiveness of their giving and to transform their philanthropic experiences. \nBefore her election\, Council Member Alter chaired the We LOVE Ramsey Park renovation campaign. She is proud to have brought together a coalition of neighbors\, families\, businesses\, several City of Austin departments\, and local non-profits to transform Ramsey Park into a park where people of all ages can play\, gather\, and grow together year-around. She served as the District 10 Representative for the Parks and Recreation Board\, on the Land\, Facilities\, and Program Committee and the Land Use/Parkland Dedication working group. She is a 2015 graduate of the Leadership Austin Essential Class.

A Gold Panda Award winner\, Sand Wars is distributed worldwide by PBS International. \nAfter fresh water\, sand is the most consumed natural resource on the planet. As a logical consequence of this exploitation\, sand’s limited reserves are threatened today. “Sand wars\,” triggered by building booms\, are raging everywhere in the world and 3/4 of the planet’s beaches are in decline and bound to disappear\, victims of erosion and – as hard it might be to comprehend – smuggling. Most of us see sand as a free material\, a staple of holidays spent on the shore\, in unlimited supply. Sand is everywhere around us\, be it beach\, desert or town. Every house\, every skyscraper with a dazzling glass front\, all our bridges\, airports and sidewalks – are basically made of sand. We use it as well to make fiber optic cable\, mobile phone components and computer chips.  But is this omnipresent material inexhaustible?  What will be the consequences of intensive sand extraction on the environment and life on the planet? DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church\, Green Sanctuary Committee –\nIn December\, Austin’s Mayor Steve Adler and Brandi Clark Burton attended the C40 Mayors Summit 2016 in Mexico City. The event\, convened by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group\, rallied 40 mayors from around the world and sustainability representatives of 90 cities to focus on the leadership needed by cities to hit the targets in the Paris Agreement. They also released the report Deadline 2020: How cities will get the job done which outlines the scale and scope of actions needed if we hope to avert more than a +1.5C global temperature rise. Come learn about the big picture\, what Austin is doing\, and what you can do to help ensure a climate safe future. \nMexico City hosted the sixth biennial C40 Mayors Summit\, November 30  – December 2\, 2016.  The Summit brought together C40 mayors from all over the world and hundreds of urban and sustainability leaders to advance urban solutions to climate change and highlight the leadership role of cities in addressing climate change. \nThe event featured a series of roundtable discussions and working sessions on city driven climate actions and their impact; the discussions were data-driven and outcome focused.
