SUMMARY:Sierra Club Meeting: Solidarity With Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Sierra Club Climate monthly meeting on Tuesday\, February 3\, as we focus on solidarity with people in Minneapolis who are facing fear\, disruption\, and injustice in their communities. \nSocial injustice is climate injustice. The intersectionality of immigration injustice and climate injustice compounds harm to affected folks. \nImmigration is a climate issue\, as more and more fathers and mothers are fleeing drought-ravaged homes in search of anywhere they might can feed their families.\nProtecting democracy is a climate issue\, because our work—already challenging—becomes vastly more difficult if it is replaced by tyranny.\nAttacks on vulnerable communities\, civil rights\, and democracy undermine the trust and collective action we need to solve the climate crisis. \nAt this meeting\, we will hear directly from people who live at ground zero in Minneapolis\, as well as others who have been on the ground protesting and supporting affected communities. We are honored that Rev. Carrie Holley-Hurt will join us\, along with several Minneapolis residents\, to share what they have witnessed and how we can stand in solidarity. \nEvent details \nTuesday\, February 3\nPotluck begins: 6:30 pm (come even if you can’t bring food)\nProgram begins: 7:00 pm \nLocation:\nFirst Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin\n4700 Grover Ave.\nAustin\, TX \nZoom option: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449 \nDuring the program\, we will: \n\nHear firsthand perspectives from Minneapolis\nOffer encouragement and solidarity to our guests\nOffer emotional support to one another\nDiscuss what we can do if similar events occur in Austin\nAsk everyone to call their U.S. Senators\nInvite donations to support people who are afraid to leave their homes and need tangible help\n\nThis will be a meaningful evening of connection\, learning\, and action. Please come if you can\, and feel free to invite others who care about justice\, democracy\, and climate.

SUMMARY:Climate Crisis Monthly Meeting - When Did Human-Caused Climate Change Actually Begin?
DESCRIPTION:30 minutes – announcements and breakouts into climate action teams \n45 minutes – When Did Climate Change Really Begin? by Bruce Melton based on article published in Truth Out\n \nGlaciers have been retreating for centuries suggesting warming has gone on a long time. Early Anthropocene Hypothesis states that climate change did not begin with the dawn of the industrial age at the end of the 19th century\, it began 7\,000 to 8\,000 years ago with the discovery of agriculture and clearing of forests for crops. This human-caused warming was then cancelled out by natural cooling that should have been occurring for the last 7\,000 to 8\,000 years until human-caused warming from fossil fuels went berserk.

SUMMARY:Climate Feedback Loops Program: Three Films and a Panel Discussion with Local Climate Organizations' Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the Sierra Club’s monthly Climate Crisis Committee meeting\, which is open to everyone and will also be available on Zoom\, we’ll plunge into feedback loops and tipping points\, processes that could dramatically accelerate global warming. That these processes have started is clear but when they might hit critical levels is a big unknown.\n \nLast year\, a series of five short educational films about Feedback Loops was introduced in a program with Greta Thunberg and the Dalai Lama. At this introduction\, Greta said\, “We cannot solve the climate emergency without taking these feedback loops into account and without really understanding them. That is a crucial step.”\n \nAt our Climate Crisis Committee Meeting on July 5\, we will watch three of these films (total 45 minutes)\, the ones on the Tundra\, Albedo\, and Forests. Following the films\, local climate leaders will discuss their reactions to these films\, why (and whether) understanding feedback loops is important to climate activists\, and how their particular organizations can use this information in their work. We will conclude with a whole group discussion.

SUMMARY:Coral Reefs & Climate: Sierra Club Monthly Climate Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Sierra Club will have its first in-person meeting in two and a half years Tuesday\, June 7 at 7 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 4700 Grover Ave. We will also stream the meeting via Zoom. Connect on Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \nCO2 levels have overshot 420 ppm for the first time in several million years. The climate crisis isn’t waiting for us to get our act together. The power of oil takes no time off. We need to act now! We need everyone who can to help in this fight. Come see if the Sierra Club has a role that fits what you want to do to fight climate change. Discussion: 7:00 – 7:30 pm\n \nPresentation: Coral Reefs and Climate Change by Juli Berwald\, author of Life on the Rocks and Spineless\, 7:30 – 8:30 pm\n \nCoral reefs are a microcosm of our planet: extra-ordinarily diverse\, deeply interconnected\, and full of wonders. When they’re thriving\, these fairy gardens hidden beneath the ocean’s surface burst with color and life. They sustain bountiful ecosystems and protect vulnerable coasts. But corals across the planet are in the middle of an unprecedented die-off\, beset by warming oceans\, pollution\, damage by humans\, and a devastating pandemic.

SUMMARY:Dinner and Discussion: Inside the Fight to Stop LNG in the Valley!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Sierra Club\, Public Citizen Texas\, the Austin Environmental Justice Team\, Extinction Rebellion ATX\, and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas –\nJoin community members from the Rio Grande Valley and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas for a dinner and panel discussion to learn more and take action to stop the fracked gas expansion near South Padre Island\, defend sacred indigenous sites\, and protect communities from environmental racism! \nFor years\, community members and activists have been organizing in the Rio Grande Valley to stop the construction of the Texas LNG export terminal and two other fracked gas projects. \nA lot is at stake in this fight! If the proposed Texas LNG terminal is built\, it would destroy the Garcia Pasture\, a historical indigenous site home to sacred burial grounds and a village. The project would also pollute nearby communities with known hazardous chemicals and irreparably destroy the habitat for endangered species\, like the ocelot. \nWe can stop all of this destruction. Our growing movement has already successfully pressured the bank to divest from the Texas LNG project\, stopped two of the projects from getting tax handouts from the school district\, and we are determined to prevent all three of these LNG projects- none of which currently have permits to build! \nRead More: https://www.texasobserver.org/liquefied-natural-gas-rio-grande-valley-endangered-pollution/

SUMMARY:350 Austin May Open Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From 350 Austin –\nWe are very fortunate to have a special guest speaker at our May open meeting. UT’s Professor Jules Elkins will be presenting research on the health impacts of coal. Dr. Elkins’s research and teaching is in environmental health and healthy indoor environments. She is particularly interested in low-dose chemical exposures\, especially during the period from preconception to early childhood. \nThe FCP is a prime example of the intersectionality of the climate crisis. It reflects the racial\, economic\, and social injustices of the fossil fuel industry that are well established. This plant is causing great harm to the most vulnerable and those least responsible for the existential threat of climate change. \nFor more info about Dr. Elkins\, check out her UT page: https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/geography/faculty/jre737 \n  \nAbout 350 Austin \n350 Austin is a local\, grassroots organization committed to the goals and strategies of 350.org (an organization that uses online campaigns\, grassroots organizing\, and mass public actions to oppose new coal\, oil and gas projects\, take money out of the companies that are heating up the planet\, and build 100 percent clean energy solutions that work for all).

SUMMARY:350 Austin December Open Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From 350 Austin –\nOur monthly general meetings are open to all! Join us on the third Tuesday of each month at First UU Church.\nWe’ll share updates on our current campaigns\, discuss climate change issues\, and learn about ways to get involved in the fossil-free revolution. \nAlthough the IPCC’s report that we have twelve years to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% is rather dire\, we actually know that this consensus-generated report very likely underestimates how rapidly global economic changes must occur if we are to avoid exceeding the 1.5 C of warming that may already be locked in. Since the release of the IPCC report in October\, reports from other institutions in the last two weeks support 350 Austin’s position that time is running out faster than has been broadly publicized. \nAt this month’s meeting\, 350 Austin co-founder Gil Starkey will be providing an update on the status of the climate crisis\, including a report on COP 24. As a member of the Board of Directors\, Gil will also be updating us on the Board’s directive in responding to the climate crisis. Co-founder Bobbie Tsukahara will then discuss the role that non-violent direct action (NVDA) will need to play in our campaigns beginning in 2019. \nDespite the doom and gloom\, we intend to make time to enjoy one another’s company as we share holiday treats. \nPlan to arrive early as we have a lot of ground to cover and want to be sure we have time for merry munching! \nPlease bring holiday finger-foods and drinks to share\, keeping in mind that we still do not have access to the church kitchen. \nAbout 350 Austin  \nWe are a local affiliate of 350.org\, a grassroots organization that is building a global climate movement. Come join in!
