This documentary showcases wonderful archival photos\, film and original historic re-creations. The story follows the memories of swimmers such as John Henry Faulk exploring the little-known history of Barton Springs before\, during and after the time of racial segregation in Austin. \nCity of Austin environmental educators and local environmental groups will be on hand before the screening to talk about how you can get involved in community efforts to support the Springs\, creeks and aquifer through volunteering and internships. \nWe will gather at 7:15 p.m. (near the big tree at the south entrance\, Azie Morton (formerly Robert E. Lee) Road. The screening will begin at full dark and last approximately 40 minutes. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. The event is completely FREE and open to kids of all ages and all families are welcome. An RSVP from school groups would be helpful. \nWhere do the School Buses unload and park? \nUnload buses in the parking lot between the Zilker Hillside Theatre and the Barton Springs bath house. Festival Staff and Safety Patrol staff will meet and help unload buses. – Park school buses in the lot directly above the Hillside Theater. DESCRIPTION:From the Save Our Springs Alliance\, Save Barton Creek Association\, and Living Springs –\nA special retrospective screening marking the 25th anniversary of the passage of the Save Our Springs Ordinance on August 8th 1992. Come learn some important Austin history about citizen efforts to protect our favorite “swimming hole!” \nEntitled “Common Ground: The Battle for Barton Springs\,” this half-hour 1993 documentary chronicles the 18-month process that resulted in the citizen-led petition drive to enhance water quality protections for Barton Springs. Shot entirely on S-VHS with a cash budget of $185\, Common Ground is the first documentary produced by Austin-based media producer\, Karen Kocher. Although low-tech and a student project\, the video nonetheless recounts some important history in the citizen-efforts to protect the Springs. \nGather at Barton Springs (near the big tree at the south entrance\, Robert E. Lee Road) before dusk. Screening begins at full darkness\, roughly 8:25pm and will last half an hour. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Before or after the screening\, take a swim in the Springs!

DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association –\nThe Issue: The City of Dripping Springs has applied for a direct discharge wastewater permit to discharge 995\,000 gallons/day of treated sewage into Onion Creek. This water would still contain nitrates and phosphates that cause algae blooms and reduce the oxygen that fish need to survive. Not to mention\, other wastewater pollutants like pharmaceuticals. \nWhy are we gathering at Barton Springs Pool? DESCRIPTION:From the Save Our Springs Alliance –\nBarton Springs University is a full day of outdoor learning and fun at Barton Springs Pool. The event is designed for high school and college students and the general public. Barton Springs University features lectures\, panel discussions\, presentations\, and training by leading academics\, professionals\, and policy makers on central Texas water science\, public policy\, and cultural history. \nLectures will take place under the trees on the hill on the south side of the pool and at other locations on the grounds\, including the Philosophers’ Rock statue at the front entrance and the Splash! Exhibit in the Sheffield Education Center. \nThis year’s event will focus on current Central Texas water resource and growth management challenges\, with an emphasis on protecting our region’s biodiversity. \nDean Hendrickson\, Curator of Ichthyology at U.T.’s Department of Integrative Biology will provide this year’s lunch time keynote address: “Get Eel Austin!: the whole truth about the weirdest fish in town.” \nThe program will be longer this year with an evening keynote by one of Texas’ leading conservationists\, Andrew Sansom. DESCRIPTION:From TreeFolks –\nTreeFolks is teaming up with Save Barton Creek Association for a tree ID walk and swim. We will take a guided walk on the Barton Creek Greenbelt to learn about the trees and find some swimming holes along the way. We’ll finish up at Barton Springs Pool where we’ll learn about the spring and explore the source. \nSpace is limited so please register to attend at treefolks.org/tree-id. The event is free\, but entrance to Barton Springs is $3 for residents and $8 for non-residents. \nTreeFolks tree identification workshops\, walks\, and hikes aim to teach you how to identify the trees that you see around you every day.
