12 Feb Preach Off on Climate Change: Examining Religion’s Role in Environmental Activism

Leaders from 10 different religious communities gathered at The Sanctuary this past Sunday for a Climate Change Preach Off that included Jews, Muslims, Baptists, Lutherans, Buddhists, Unitarian Universalists, and Presbyterians. 

And although some wore kippahs and others wore clerical collars, their words and messages were surprisingly similar. That God loves the Earth and wants us to care for it, that it is our duty to do so, and that religion can play a bigger role in helping humanity to deal with the climate change crisis.

Rabbi Neil Blumofe, of Congregation Agudas Achim, chants the words Psalm 24 at the Preach Off on Climate Change, held last Sunday at The Sanctuary. 

Vicki Merriweather, of Mt. Zion Baptist, delivered a stirring sermon on the power of the individual to combat climate change at the Preach Off on Climate Change last Sunday. 

Shaykh Mufti Mohamed-Umer Esmail, of Nueces Mosque, shared stories of the Prophet Muhammad's own love for the environment at the Preach Off on Climate Change at The Sanctuary.
