SUMMARY:Groasis Splash
DESCRIPTION:Come cool off with us at Groasis Splash! With your help\, we’ll wash and prep our Groasis Waterboxxes for the new planting season. These innovative planting devices capture rain and condensation\, then slowly release it to young trees—helping them survive the Central Texas heat while using very little water. By giving them a good cleaning\, you’ll be making sure they’re ready to keep supporting the Central Texas Floodplain Reforestation Program and the next generation of trees. \nExpect a fun few hours of suds\, splashes\, and good vibes—we’ll have snacks and tunes to keep the energy high. Please wear clothing and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and/or a little dirty. Think of it as one last chance to soak up Austin’s “bonus summer” before the cooler weather rolls in. \nWe will meet at the TreeFolks headquarters at 10803 Platt Lane\, Austin\, 78725. \nNo experience necessary! We will provide gloves and all other supplies\, as well as coffee\, water\, and snacks. We look forward to working with you! You can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Summer Education Series: Ready\, Set\, Restore!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, July 16\, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM for a free virtual class with two presenters from Austin’s Watershed Protection Department. Meghan Slocombe will discuss the impacts of urbanization on water cycle processes and stream ecology\, and provide an overview of WPD monitoring. Liz Cardinal will teach us about land management practices in Grow Zones and the positive impacts of community stewardship in Austin on riparian health.   We will examine how concepts of urban stream ecology apply to the work that volunteers do in the Ready\, Set\, Plant! program and discuss how WPD protects our community’s lives\, property\, and environment by reducing the impacts of flooding\, erosion\, and water pollution. \nMeghan Slocombe is an Environmental Scientist in the Applied Watershed Science section of the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. Her work focuses on monitoring water quality and assessing stream health across Austin. Meghan holds a Master of Science in Ecology from Utah State University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Meghan is passionate about community engagement\, climate resilience\, and science with real-world applications. She loves spending time in Austin’s beautiful streams\, whether she is out measuring water quality during the workday or enjoying a relaxing evening in her kayak! \nLiz Cardinal is a dedicated environmental stewardship professional with over eight years of experience working alongside nonprofit\, community\, and government organizations to drive positive change in parks and greenspaces. She currently manages the Grow Zone Program at Austin Watershed Protection. The program designates\, restores\, and protects over 260 acres of riparian zones in Austin watersheds. She works closely with nonprofit partners and citizen volunteers to help clean up creeks and waterways and carry out restoration projects like litter abatement\, invasive species removal and native planting.  She holds a B.S. in Environmental Communication from The Ohio State University\, and a M.S. in Science Education from Portland State University. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but you must register to attend. If you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738 cell

SUMMARY:Summer Education Series: Mountain Cedars
DESCRIPTION:Event Date: Saturday\, June 27th\nTime: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM\nLocation: virtually on Google Meet\, or in person at Hornsby Bend Center for Environmental Research\, 2210 FM973\, Austin\, TX 78725 \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE \nFor more than 100 years\, we’ve fought the woody brush spreading across the limestone regions of Texas\, called karst country. Much of this woody cover consists of native juniper trees\, commonly called mountain cedars. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars act as ecosystem engineers to improve and sustain Texas karst country function. Come learn about these benefits and what we can do to use mountain cedars as another nature-based solution to help enhance soil health\, groundwaters\, productivity\, property values\, and resilience. \nElizabeth McGreevy\, a sixth-generation Texas and Texas A&M graduate\, is a natural resources ecologist and author of Wanted! Mountain Cedars\, Dead and Alive. The owner of Land Steward\, she relies on more than 25 years of experience to produce ecosystem-based management plans for Hill Country landowners. In 2022\, she founded Project Bedrock\, now in partnership with The Watershed Association\, to promote using mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to regenerate the limestone karst country regions of Texas. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but you must register to attend. SUMMARY:Tree ID for Seed Savers at Circle C Ranch Metro Park
DESCRIPTION:Have you been wondering what kind of tree is growing in your yard? Maybe you want to learn a fun new skill? Well\, you’re in luck because the Central Texas Seed Savers and TreeFolks are coming to the Circle C Ranch Metro Park to lead a Tree ID lesson to help you learn a little more about what’s growing around you! \nYou will learn how to identify native trees and how to safely and ethically collect seeds to donate to the TreeFolks Seeds To Trees Native Nursery. \nMeet your walk leader by the bathrooms next to the soccer fields. Free parking is available in the parking lot. You can RSVP here. \nThe Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network of people who love seeds with the mission of preventing the extinction of ecologically and culinarily important plants in the Central Texas Region. \nTreeFolks was founded as Austin’s Urban Forestry non-profit in 1989. Since then\, TreeFolks has grown to work with communities throughout Central Texas in community tree planting\, tree giveaways\, education\, and urban wildland reforestation efforts. Our mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees.

SUMMARY:Groasis Splash!
\nBy giving them a good clean\, you’ll be making sure they’re ready to keep supporting the Central Texas Floodplain Reforestation Program and the next generation of trees. \nExpect a fun few hours of suds\, splashes\, and good vibes—we’ll have snacks to keep you fueled and tunes to keep the energy high. Think of it as one last chance to soak up Austin’s “bonus summer” before the cooler weather rolls in. \nBe sure to wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet and/or a little dirty. \nYou can sign up for the morning session (9am to noon) or the afternoon session (1pm to 4pm).
