SUMMARY:Common Waters: A Demonstration Project for the Butler Trail and Lady Bird Lake
DESCRIPTION:About: \nJoin us for a virtual workshop to learn about the Common Waters project and meet the creatives selected to design the installation. The Workshop will offer an immersion into three themes that are important to public art along the Butler Trail: Cultural Preservation\, Climate Change + Resilience\, and Environmental Activism. Each theme will be explored in a session guided by local and national creatives\, activists\, directors\, designers and thinkers. The Workshop will give community members an opportunity to learn\, ask questions\, and provide insights that will help inspire the Commons Waters project as well as the Arts + Culture Plan that is being developed for the Trail.\n \nGoal: \nTo educate\, share knowledge and give context to the selected artists about the three foundational themes developed by the Brain Trust community advisors. In learning how to navigate a new process of bringing arts\, culture and ecology together\, this workshop will help lay the groundwork for The Trail Foundation’s Arts + Culture Plan.\n \nWorkshop Mentors / Speakers:\n \n\nStacy Levy\n\nGo Austin Vamos Austin\nTravis County African American Cultural Heritage Commission\nHarris County African American Cultural Heritage Commission\nand More!

SUMMARY:Holly Project Updated Design Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of the updated design for the Holly Project!\n\n\n \n\nThe Trail Foundation’s Holly Project completed the second open house for community outreach back in December of 2019. The project was then paused due to COVID-19 and to await the final layout of the Lakefront Trail going through permitting. TTF and the design team resumed their work on the project in November of 2020. We are excited to now present the updated design for the project!\n\n\n \n\nThursday\, June 24\, 2021 from 6pm-7pm CST\n\nRegister for the Zoom meeting here. \n\n \n\n——-\n\nMore about the Holly Project \n\n\nThe Trail Foundation is preparing to implement various elements proposed in PARD’s Holly Shores/Edward Rendon Sr. Park Master Plan which designed a vision for revitalized open space that integrates redevelopment of the decommissioned Holly Street Power Plant site with existing open space. During the development of the Master Plan\, consultants worked with the neighboring communities through a series of public meetings and outreach efforts to identify priorities from as wide a constituency as possible. The Trail Foundation desires to build on these successful engagement efforts to ensure the community continues its collaboration during the design of Holly Project\, an inaugural Corgan Canopy Fund project announced in 2018 as one of the 15 projects for TTF’s 15th anniversary \n \nHolly Project is located just west of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach\, adjacent to the lagoon and the baseball fields. The area is located in the East Cesar Chavez and Holly Neighborhoods\, home to generations of Hispanic residents who have worked to preserve the area’s character and its culturally historic sites. A significant achievement for the community has been the recognition by the U.S. Department of the Interior to designate the Tejano Music Legends Trail as a National Recreation Trail. The trail showcases many historic and cultural sites that honor Austin’s Latino musical legends from the 1940s and 50s. Part of the 5.6-mile pathway runs along the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail making a connection between the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Arts Center (ESB-MACC) and Holly Project. Neighborhood leaders are currently working with partners and area schools to improve promotion of the trails for fitness\, health\, historic preservation\, and cultural awareness.\n \nWorking with the community and the City of Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department\, The Trail Foundation is anticipating the transition of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant into parkland and its impact on the realignment of the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. In addition to providing an ADA-accessible realignment of the Trail along the waterfront\, the project will support the ecological restoration of the urban forest\, natural areas and protection of the shoreline for wildlife habitat. The site improvements are expected to preserve the natural character of the area while providing seating under the tree canopy and along the waterfront.

SUMMARY:Drake Bridge Commons Community Engagement #2
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Trail Foundation and the Austin Parks and Rec Department –\nThe Trail Foundation (TTF)\, in partnership with the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD)\, invites community members to the second community input event on the Drake Bridge Commons. At this event\, the new Drake Bridge Commons project will be revealed and public input on the design and programming will be sought.\nThe event will include free family activities\, entertainment\, and snacks donated by local vendors. Community feedback will help inform the next phases of the project.\nWHERE: The Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Drake Bridge Commons (Under 1st St. Bridge\, North Lady Bird Lake)\nMore info about Drake Bridge Commons:\nMost Austinites know Drake Bridge as the 1st Street Bridge\, and there is little sense of the Trail at Drake Bridge as a place or destination. This project\, an inaugural Corgan Canopy Fund project\, intends to create a memorable space under the north Drake Bridge and anticipates new walking surfaces and an improved water’s edge. Because the under-bridge condition is so dark\, it offers possibilities for dramatic treatments in the use of lighting\, water\, and materials. While the focus is the area under the bridge itself\, an extended zone on each side will also be considered. \nThe community’s feedback will help to inform the next phases of the project\, which will transform the space under the 1st Street Bridge and surrounding hillsides into a new public amenity linking downtown to the Butler Trail and Lady Bird Lake. Designers and TTF staff will be available for conversations at the event. \nThe Drake Bridge Commons space will incorporate three themes: Equitable Access\, Ecological Imagination\, and Irresistible Attraction. Program elements could include Trail improvements\, green stormwater infrastructure\, lighting\, water access\, seating\, donor recognition\, interpretive features\, and more. \n

SUMMARY:Seaholm Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Parks Foundation and the Trail Foundation –\nJoin Austin Parks Foundation and The Trail Foundation to explore the potential plans for the historic Seaholm Intake Facility over FREE Lick Ice Cream. The goal for this revamp is to create an open and flexible space that can be used any day by the public and periodically for events\, including improvements such as: flexible lawn space\, multiple water access points\, trail restorations and an amphitheater. \nFree Lick Ice Cream will be offered on a first come\, first served basis\, so come out early to beat the heat and the lines! \nAbout the site:\nThe Seaholm Intake facility is an iconic Art Deco design and once was the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant. The Seaholm Power Plant represents a strong civic presence in the cityscape of downtown Austin and showcases a unique period of American Art Deco municipal architecture and Public Works engineering. Seaholm operated as a power plant until 1989. In 1996\, Austin City Council authorized the decommissioning of the plant and all the associated buildings\, in preparation for future adaptive re-use. The Seaholm Intake Facility is located on the banks of Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. (seaholmwaterfront.org)
