SUMMARY:Kids on Bikes in Parks
DESCRIPTION:Kids on Bikes in Parks is a free cycling event presented by Violet Crown\, The LeadOut Foundation\, and The Trail Conservancy. We have a closed course of 1000 ft of grassy parkland for children ages 5-15 to ride their bikes on. We will have open track time with experienced cyclists present to teach lessons and at the top of every hour\, we will have timed laps for kids to test themselves and track their progress. \nWe will have a fleet of bikes provided by WOOM Bikes on hand for any child wishing to try one or without a bike of their own to ride the course. All participants are eligible to receive some giveaways from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop and Trek Bikes. \nParents/guardians must remain on-site but can enjoy some cold beverages while supervising their children on the course. Please note: Helmets are required at all times when on a bike.

Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water provide excellent habitats for a variety of bird species. As TTC restores this section of the Buter Trail\, there will be a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk! \nBird walks are: \n\n1-2 miles long\, completed in around 3 hours\nBeginner-friendly (all levels are welcome)\nOn mostly flat terrain (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks)\nWe have binoculars to lend to anyone who doesn’t have a pair\n\n  \nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. A reminder email with details will be sent before the bird walk date.

The project also features the Unity Underpass\, which includes public art by Reginald Adams\, created with contributions from more than 200 community members. \nTogether\, these new additions enhance mobility\, safety\, and access to nature while celebrating Austin’s commitment to active transportation and vibrant public spaces. \nAll are welcome to attend\, explore\, and be part of this exciting new chapter for our city. \nThere are three entrances to the Wishbone Bridge: \n\nSouth of Longhorn Dam (entrance to the Unity Underpass)\nNorth of Longhorn Dam at the end of Canterbury St.\nNorth of the Longhorn Dam at the end of the old Holly peninsula\n\nParking is available at Krieg Field.

Together\, we’ll explore how community stories and creativity can shape the art that makes our park a true reflection of home. \nFree Tacos and Beverages will be provided. \nGet to Know the Artist: Lys Santamaria \nSelected from an open call in July\, Lys is a Colombian-born\, Austin-based artist whose work in glass beads and tile explores joy\, healing\, and storytelling inspired by her identity as a Latina\, woman\, and immigrant. \nAs a public artist\, Lys describes her role as “a translator”—listening to communities\, honoring their stories\, and reflecting them through intentional design. Her current projects include a commission for the Joan Means Khabele Bathhouse Rehabilitation.
