DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 17th to celebrate the solar installation and grand opening of the East-Knight House Park and Resiliency Center\, Solar Austin’s most recent Community Installation project in East Austin!\n \n Making a Difference: \n\nSolar Austin’s commitment to advance sustainability\, equity\, and climate resilience in our community is coming to life through our Community Donated Solar Installation Program (Community Installs). Our initiative focuses on installing rooftop solar arrays and battery storage systems in low-income neighborhoods\, creating resiliency centers that provide reliable access to clean energy during grid emergencies. These centers also serve as educational hubs\, raising climate change awareness in vulnerable communities. We’ve also integrated our Pathways to Clean Energy Program\, which provides workforce development opportunities for Opportunity Youth in the clean energy sector.\n \n\nWe have partnered with The Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation (GNDC)\, a non-profit housing developer that provides affordable rental and homeownership opportunities to households with generational ties to East Austin. Check out their work here: https://www.guadalupendc.org/\n \n\nThis project was made possible thanks to Greentech Renewables\, Lighthouse Solar\, and Longhorn Solar. They generously volunteer their time\, labor\, and materials to install the donated solar for the resiliency center. McElroy is a chemist by trade with energy consultation services spanning over 6 Gigawatt of energy storage and hybrid generation projects. McElroy has expanded Fractal’s reach into regulated\, deregulated\, and emerging markets around the world supporting electric utilities and major developers transition into energy storage. McElroy has devoted major efforts towards creating utility education\, awareness\, and policy support to enable energy storage technology planning and procurement. Prior to Fractal\, McElroy was the Chief Marketing Officer for two energy storage companies and worked for 10 years as a chemist. McElroy is also a Founder of Fractal EMS\, a leading storage controls company\, and serves on the Board of Community Energy.\n \n\nJennifer G. Gallegos is a Stanford-trained engineer and a strategic marketing leader in the clean tech industry. She currently serves as the Director of Programs & Communications at Yotta Energy\, a startup based in Austin\, Texas\, that’s reimagining the way the world stores and uses solar energy. Gallegos is a licensed professional engineer in Texas. She has also written about a variety of topics including emerging technologies\, eLearning\, and design. Prior to joining Yotta Energy\, she held roles in project management\, building design\, sales\, and marketing. The one exception to Lone Star utilities’ particularly scathing performance reviews came from the members of the 60+ electric cooperatives operating within the Texas Interconnection grid. According to Forbes Magazine\, customers of these city-owned cooperatives submitted the only positive evaluations of their local utility’s February freeze performance.\n \nAs one of the few applauded utilities\, Bandera Electric Cooperative (BEC) will be joining Solar Austin to discuss what set them apart from commercial competitors. DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 30th to learn what’s really happening on the policy and business front of Texas’ State of Solar in 2021. \n\nWhen a deadly winter storm descended last month\, over 5 million homes and businesses were left without power. When the ice finally melted\, Lone Star State officials began searching for answers\, for chinks in the armor of a state widely reputed to be an energy powerhouse. According to data collected by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) during that week\, solar and wind energy delivered 91% and 106% respectively of its promised power\, while coal and natural gas delivered 73% and 68% respectively of its promised load. Given the performance of clean energy and solar in particular\, we wonder how this information may advise the way for a more robust energy portfolio and less vulnerable electrical grid. On March 30th\, Solar Austin will be sitting down with Sen. Jose Menendez and Charlie Hemmeline to tackle the questions: what can Texas – the Energy Giant – learn from these historic power failures\, and how can the solar industry help us as a state grow resiliency before the next climate-related crisis strikes?\n \nFor the last three years\, State Sen. Jose Menendez (D-26\, Bexar County) has been one of the loudest pro-solar voices on either side of the political aisle. This happy hour\, Sen. Menendez will give us the rundown of Senate Bill 398\, which was filed in early February and will ensure that solar customers receive the information needed to make informed decisions and also prohibit municipalities from unreasonably restricting the right of citizens to choose their own energy source. DESCRIPTION:Solar Austin’s upcoming happy hour is dedicated to…trees! Just as solar panels help decarbonize our planet\, trees capture CO2 to keep Austin’s air breathable and sidewalks cool. Trees are also key to our city’s fight against climate change\, thanks in large part to the efforts to a longtime local leader: TreeFolks. \nTreeFolks spent much of its 30 year history rehoming individual trees to Austinites\, until disaster relief work propelled them into the reforestation game and their capacity as an organization expanded tremendously. After helping communities in Central Texas reforest and heal in the wake of fire and flood\, TreeFolks began to focus on strengthening community resilience before disaster could strike. \nIdentifying climate change as the next largest upheaval facing Central Texas\, TreeFolks partnered with City Forest Credits and various branches of the City of Austin to develop carbon capture projects\, planting native trees first in local greenways\, then in privately-owned parcels across Eastern Travis County. DESCRIPTION:Kicking off 2021\, Solar Austin invites you to join us in celebrating the pioneers of the Pathways to Clean Energy Careers program!  \nLaunched in the midst of a global pandemic and a historic time focusing on racial justice\, the Pathways Program was a leap towards a stronger and more equitable clean energy workforce\, in a sector that is nationally over 70% white and male.  \nSix companies answered Solar Austin’s challenge to create pathways of opportunity for youth in the solar industry this past fall! From residential to utility scale solar installers\, these regional employers have nurtured the talent of nine young interns — teaching them the intricacies of working in Texas’ bustling solar sector\, while also learning the many ways in which different perspectives add value to the workplace. As fall internships wrap up\, we’re excited to celebrate with our Austin community the amazing interns and clean energy professionals who helped move the needle towards a renewable energy sector that more accurately represents our community.  \nJanuary’s happy hour will be an opportunity to hear program participants’ candid views on the value of and barriers to a diverse and inclusive local clean energy workforce. September’s happy hour will be a unique opportunity to learn about and discuss the City of Austin’s Climate Equity Plan with the Climate Program Manager himself: Zach Baumer! \nRatified by Austin City Council in 2015\, the Austin Community Climate Plan was originally a pledge to reduce the city’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050. In pursuit of this ambitious goal\, the city implemented a number of strategies to lower emissions across Austin’s energy\, transportation\, and waste management sectors. Five years in\, it’s time to take stock! Under his leadership\, the Sierra Club has grown to more than 3.5 million supporters\, and its Beyond Coal campaign has been recognized as one of the most effective in environmental history. Prior to joining the Sierra Club\, Michael led the Rainforest Action Network for seven years\, during which the organization won more than a dozen key environmental commitments from America’s largest corporations. \nMichael holds degrees in economics and finance from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. His critically acclaimed book\, Coming Clean: Breaking America’s Addiction to Oil and Coal (2010)\, details a plan for a new green economy that will create good paying jobs\, promote environmental justice\, and bolster national security. Michael and his wife\, Mary\, attribute their ongoing passion for environmental activism in part to their concern that their children inherit a healthy world.

DESCRIPTION:On June 16th\, Bill McKibben will be joining Solar Austin to talk about his work fighting the most pressing environmental issues of our times.  \nBill McKibben is a founder of 350.org\, the first planet-wide\, grassroots climate change movement\, which has organized twenty thousand rallies around the world in every country save North Korea\, spearheaded the resistance to the Keystone Pipeline\, and launched the fast-growing fossil fuel divestment movement. \nA renowned writer\, McKibben was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize in 2014\, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel.’ His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change\, and has appeared in 24 languages— he’s gone on to write a dozen more books.  \nThe Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, McKibben was the 2013 winner of the Gandhi Prize and the Thomas Merton Prize\, and holds honorary degrees from 18 colleges and universities. Foreign Policy named him to their inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers\, and the Boston Globe said he was “probably America’s most important environmentalist.” \nA former staff writer for the New Yorker\, he writes frequently for a wide variety of publications around the world\, including the New York Review of Books\, National Geographic\, and Rolling Stone. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors . SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Electrified Mass Transit with Capital Metro
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Solar Austin –\nSustainability and climate action require much more than just solar\, so we’re branching out to spend time on another very important topic this month – public transportation. Transportation accounts for about a third of local greenhouse gas emissions and will be the largest source once Austin Energy is able to retire its portion of the coal-burning Fayette power plant. \nSo how do we make a dent in all that pollution? And how can we reclaim some of our time (and sanity) lost sitting in Austin’s ever worsening traffic? High capacity\, rapid\, convenient public transportation offers a solution. This has been an elusive goal for Austin over the years\, but Cap Metro\, with the support of the City of Austin\, is making another go at it in the form of Project Connect. The vision for Project Connect is an interconnected system of public transportation options that connect people to jobs\, education\, healthcare and the places they love. This system will include fully dedicated transitways\, enhanced MetroRail service\, MetroRapid corridors\, and more Park and Ride facilities. We’ll hear all about Project Connect from Joe Clemens\, Deputy Project Manager at Capital Metro. \nBut that’s not all! Cap Metro is also working to electrify its fleet of buses. This is great news for everyone concerned about local air pollution\, as well as climate change\, because emissions from diesel vehicles\, including buses is particularly harmful. Electric bus technology is now able to serve many of Cap Metro’s bus routes and will soon be able to serve the whole system.
