SUMMARY:Sierra Club July Meeting: Keep The Power On!
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 15th for our July general meeting at the Mosaic Workshop to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk about energy issues in Texas from Shane Johnson of the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter. \nDoors open at 6:30 for light snacks and conversation. Club updates and program starts at 7pm. We hope you’ll join us.\nMany Sierrans and environmental allies are motivated to help stop or slow climate change. For the past several years\, in order to help broaden the base of everyday Texans who are engaged in that critical climate justice work\, the Sierra Club Lone Star Chapter has prioritized campaigns that address energy burden\, energy poverty\, and economic justice; all issues exacerbated by the rapidly warming climate. \nTexans are struggling with skyrocketing energy bills\, on top of rising cost of living\, thanks largely to the data center boom and how Gov. Abbott and many state leaders allow energy companies to keep raising our bills to make more profit off of our backs. We are all tired of Texans having to choose between groceries\, medicine\, clothing for their kids\, and a safe thermostat setting. But we need your help to make a difference. \nTo help regular Texans\, we need enough everyday people coming together to have the influence to combat these powerful companies and the ultra-wealthy who own many (but not all ) Texas lawmakers. Join us on Wed\, July 15th to learn what major decisions on energy issues are coming up at state agencies and the legislature\, like whether the people or corporations pay for majorly expensive new transmission infrastructure\, and what you can do about it. \nFor the General Meeting please RSVP HERE for in-person attendance! \nWhere: The Mosaic Workshop\, 729 Airport Blvd\, Austin\, TX 78702. Parking map here. Park in the Mosaic Workshop spots or those at the City Union building. (Please avoid spots designated for Broad Studios Club House). \nWhen: Wednesday July 15. Arrive at 6:30pm for light snacks and conversation. Program starts at 7pm.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club March Meeting: Water for People and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday March 10th for our March general meeting to socialize with like-minded Austin neighbors and hear a talk about water issues facing the state of Texas. \nThis month we are very excited to be in a new venue\, The Mosaic Workshop in East Austin. Thanks to the folks there for generously offering to host us! \nDoors open at 6:30 for a light dinner and conversation. Club updates and program starts at 7pm. We hope you’ll join us — and bring a friend who cares about Texas’ water future! \nDr. Evgenia Spears\, Water Program Coordinator for the Lone Star Chapter Sierra Club\, will join us via video link to speak on water issues facing the state of Texas. \nWater issues affect all of us — from river flows in Central Texas\, to desalination proposals on the Gulf Coast\, to aging water infrastructure and groundwater depletion across the state. Evgenia will discuss these problems and address the major policy challenges ahead\, including what Sierra Club has done and is doing to protect Texas waters. She will also highlight how you can get involved through the Chapter’s Water for People & the Environment Committee\, a statewide volunteer initiative dedicated to protecting Texas’ water. \nPlease RSVP HERE for in-person attendance! \nZoom option: For those that can’t make this event in person\, a Zoom Link will be available at 7 pm. \nAlso\, a recording of the presentation will be posted to the Austin Group’s YouTube channel within several days. \nEvgenia Spears leads advocacy efforts to protect Texas’ water resources for the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter. Through grassroots organizing\, water education\, and legislative advocacy\, she works to ensure that communities across the state have a voice in shaping a sustainable water future. Prior to joining Sierra Club\, Evgenia spent several years at Texas A&M University in College Station\, where she earned a doctorate with a focus on natural resource management\, taught undergraduate courses on natural resource policy\, served as a watershed coordinator with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service\, and developed strategic natural resource planning documents for Texas. Having lived in rural Ukraine\, suburban Russia\, and now in the U.S.\, Evgenia brings a unique perspective on water management\, viewing water not simply as a resource to manage\, but as a relationship to nurture. Outside of her work\, Evgenia enjoys being with her family\, spending time in nature\, and traveling.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Meeting: Solidarity With Minneapolis
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Sierra Club Climate monthly meeting on Tuesday\, February 3\, as we focus on solidarity with people in Minneapolis who are facing fear\, disruption\, and injustice in their communities. \nSocial injustice is climate injustice. The intersectionality of immigration injustice and climate injustice compounds harm to affected folks. \nImmigration is a climate issue\, as more and more fathers and mothers are fleeing drought-ravaged homes in search of anywhere they might can feed their families.\nProtecting democracy is a climate issue\, because our work—already challenging—becomes vastly more difficult if it is replaced by tyranny.\nAttacks on vulnerable communities\, civil rights\, and democracy undermine the trust and collective action we need to solve the climate crisis. \nAt this meeting\, we will hear directly from people who live at ground zero in Minneapolis\, as well as others who have been on the ground protesting and supporting affected communities. We are honored that Rev. Carrie Holley-Hurt will join us\, along with several Minneapolis residents\, to share what they have witnessed and how we can stand in solidarity. \nEvent details \nTuesday\, February 3\nPotluck begins: 6:30 pm (come even if you can’t bring food)\nProgram begins: 7:00 pm \nLocation:\nFirst Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin\n4700 Grover Ave.\nAustin\, TX \nZoom option: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449 \nDuring the program\, we will: \n\nHear firsthand perspectives from Minneapolis\nOffer encouragement and solidarity to our guests\nOffer emotional support to one another\nDiscuss what we can do if similar events occur in Austin\nAsk everyone to call their U.S. Senators\nInvite donations to support people who are afraid to leave their homes and need tangible help\n\nThis will be a meaningful evening of connection\, learning\, and action. Please come if you can\, and feel free to invite others who care about justice\, democracy\, and climate.

SUMMARY:Climate Crisis Monthly Meeting - When Did Human-Caused Climate Change Actually Begin?
DESCRIPTION:30 minutes – announcements and breakouts into climate action teams \n45 minutes – When Did Climate Change Really Begin? by Bruce Melton based on article published in Truth Out\n \nGlaciers have been retreating for centuries suggesting warming has gone on a long time. Early Anthropocene Hypothesis states that climate change did not begin with the dawn of the industrial age at the end of the 19th century\, it began 7\,000 to 8\,000 years ago with the discovery of agriculture and clearing of forests for crops. This human-caused warming was then cancelled out by natural cooling that should have been occurring for the last 7\,000 to 8\,000 years until human-caused warming from fossil fuels went berserk.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Program ONLINE: Plastic Reduction Project
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is the Plastic Reduction Project\, with Sean Winn.\n \nThis presentation will focus on a project to get restaurants to shift away from single-use items … including citizen-scientists to help crowd source data and become Consultants to assist restaurants in profitably going green.\n \nSean Winn is Co-Founder of the PlasticReductionProject.org\, an Austin-area 501(c)3 nonprofit seeking to reduce plastic waste in its many forms. His organization is working in conjunction with the Plastics Action Team of our local chapter’s Climate Change Committee.\n \nSean spent most of his career in Asia in the finance industry with Citibank and Standard Chartered Bank. He held a variety of roles\, but his longest stretch was as COO of a distressed investments private equity fund. Sean grew up in Franklin\, Texas\, a rural town of about 1\,000 people roughly two hours NE of Austin. “My parents still live there; there is no recycling service anywhere in the county. At some point I would like to get a project running to bring a recycling drop-off service to these sorts of recycling deserts.”\n \nSean graduated from UT with a degree in Finance in 1993\, and after retiring from his finance career returned to UT\, earning a degree in History in 2018. Before the Plastic Reduction Project took over his life\, Sean began writing and published several poems\, short stories and essays in a number of literary magazines during the Pandemic. He is also an avid tennis player.\n \nOn a side note\, Sean is looking for volunteers who would be willing to collaborate with him to create a sharp\, concise video about recycling in Austin\, what is and is not recycled\, and specifics to answer all of our questions about recycling so that it can be shared widely with our community. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Program: Inspiring Conservation Through Birding
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be LIVE and online via Zoom.\n \n\nZOOM LINK: https://zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \n\nLIVE: We request that persons attending be healthy and vaccinated. Come early (6 to 7pm) for drinks and dinner.\n \n\nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Inspiring Conservation Through Birding\, withTravis Audubon’s Executive Director Nicole Netherton.\n \n\nBirds tell us a lot about habitat health and environmental change. But in what ways are they showing us our environmental future? What human-caused threats do they face\, and how can we help improve their—and our—odds of survival? Join Nicole Netherton\, Executive Director of Travis Audubon to discuss these connections between humans and birds in Central Texas and all along the central flyway. We’ll discuss the magic (and perils) of migration\, the importance of pollinator-friendly plants\, and simple things you can do to both learn about and protect bird species in our area.\n \n\nNicole Netherton is the Executive Director of Travis Audubon\, an independent chapter of the National Audubon Society. Founded in 1952\, Travis Audubon is the oldest conservation organization in Austin. Nicole has been ED since 2018\, but has been a member of TAS since she moved back to Austin in 2009. She always noticed birds as a child\, but got really interested in birds and birding while living in New York City in the early 2000s. Her favorite bird is the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher or Carolina Wren\, depending on the day. A Native Houstonian\, she was educated at The University of Texas at Austin and had a long career in marketing for a book publisher before moving to the nonprofit world in 2016. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Program - Conversation with Congressman Lloyd Doggett
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom. In the future we will mix Zoom programs with in-person/hybrid programs.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett will join us to discuss issues that affect us as Americans\, Texans and Austinites. Ask your questions using the Zoom chat feature.\n \nLloyd Doggett represents communities from Austin to San Antonio in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves as Chairman of the Health Subcommittee on the House Ways & Means Committee\, the oldest committee of the United States Congress. Doggett is also a member of the Ways and Means Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee\, the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee\, the Joint Committee on Taxation\, and the House Budget Committee.\n \nWhile a student at The University of Texas at Austin\, he was elected student body president and graduated first in his class from the College of Business Administration. He then graduated with Honors from Texas Law\, where he served as Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review. Elected to the Texas Senate soon after\, Congressman Doggett became known for his untiring work ethic. He authored 124 state laws\, including one which created the Texas Commission on Human Rights to prohibit discrimination\, and another called the Texas Sunset Act\, which sought greater efficiency and accountability by requiring periodic review of government agencies.\n \nPrior to coming to Congress\, Congressman Doggett served as Justice to the Texas Supreme Court\, he wrote opinions supporting the right to a trial by jury and authored an important rule bolstering the public’s access to information. He served as Chair of the Supreme Court Task Force on Judicial Ethics and was recognized as an Outstanding Judge in Texas by the Mexican-American Bar of Texas. He was awarded the James Madison Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas\, and received the First Amendment Award from the National Society of Professional Journalists.\n \nSave the Children recognized his leadership with the Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award. AARP honored him twice\, once with its Legislative Achievement Award for his leadership on Medicare\, and again with its Legislative Leadership Award for his efforts to preserve seniors’ access to healthcare. He received the “Vision Award” from the Power of Preservation Foundation for his commitment to historic preservation. He was also awarded the “Champion of Music” award by the Texas Chapter of The Recording Academy\, which sponsors the Grammy Awards\, and has been recognized 12 times by Austin Chronicle readers with a “Best of Austin” award\, most recently in 2021. He is a leader in the effort to lower prescription drug prices\, and authored bills that established the Commission to End Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities and successfully enacted a higher-education tax credit.\n \nSince Lloyd Doggett was elected to the United States House of Representatives\, he has served as a strong defender of Social Security\, Medicare\, health care\, immigration reform\, the environment\, our veterans\, and public education. The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce has named Congressman Doggett the Government Hispanic Business Advocate of the Year. To learn more about Representative Doggett and his legislative priorities\, you can visit the Issues page of his site at www.doggett.house.gov\n \nRepresentative Doggett’s wife\, Libby\, recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Early Learning at the U.S. Department of Education\, overseeing both the Early Learning Challenge and the Preschool Development Grant programs. She began her career as a bilingual first grade teacher at Ortega Elementary School in Austin. Dr. Libby Doggett leveraged her leadership and management skills honed over 40-plus years through work in schools\, Head Start\, and child care with children with and without disabilities to build public will and strong\, diverse local coalitions in Texas to improve children’s readiness for Kindergarten.\n \nThe Doggetts have two daughters: Lisa\, an Austin physician; and Cathy\, who leads teams across Texas that work with new\, disadvantaged parents. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program - ONLINE: The Austin Energy Rate Case
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom. In the future we will mix Zoom programs with in-person/hybrid programs.\n \nZOOM LINK: https://zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events…\nTonite’s main program is\nAssuring a Clean Energy Future in Austin and Texas:\nThe Austin Energy Rate Case\, the Public Utility Commission\nSunset Process\, and You\nwith Cyrus Reed\, Ph.D.\nConservation Director\, Lone Star Chapter\, Sierra Club\n \nCyrus Reed will cover two big topics that will impact the future of Texas and Austin. First\, Austin Energy has proposed significant changes in their rates and rate design that could undermine efforts to build a clean energy future in Austin\, and close the Fayette Power Plant. Fortunately\, no decisions will be made until later this year\, and we can make a difference.\n \nSecond\, following the catastrophic winter storm Uri\, and the failure of the ERCOT grid\, the Legislature has tasked the Public Utility Commission with making changes to our energy market\, while also putting the PUCT\, ERCOT and the Office of Public Utility Counsel through sunset\, meaning a unique opportunity to influence what our electric future will look like in Texas.\n \nCyrus Reed has served as Conservation Director for the state chapter of the Sierra Club for the last 15 years. He has a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin\, with a focus on water policy and the dispute over the Rio Grande water with Mexico. Reed serves on several committee at ERCOT\, is the state chapter’s main lobbyist during legislative sessions\, and also serves on the City of Austin’s Electric Utility Commission.\n \nPrior to becoming conservation director\, he served as Sierra Club’s lobbyist on energy and air quality issues during the 2005 and 2007 legislative sessions\, and directed the Texas Center for Policy Studies\, an environmental policy and advocacy organization based in Austin\, for five years. He is presently working on energy issues and their impacts. Cyrus has also worked as a journalist and has spent considerable time in Mexico\, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Reed also has been a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader as well as a volunteer soccer coach. He is married with three children\, only one of whom is still at home.

SUMMARY:Climate Feedback Loops Program: Three Films and a Panel Discussion with Local Climate Organizations' Leaders
DESCRIPTION:At the Sierra Club’s monthly Climate Crisis Committee meeting\, which is open to everyone and will also be available on Zoom\, we’ll plunge into feedback loops and tipping points\, processes that could dramatically accelerate global warming. That these processes have started is clear but when they might hit critical levels is a big unknown.\n \nLast year\, a series of five short educational films about Feedback Loops was introduced in a program with Greta Thunberg and the Dalai Lama. At this introduction\, Greta said\, “We cannot solve the climate emergency without taking these feedback loops into account and without really understanding them. That is a crucial step.”\n \nAt our Climate Crisis Committee Meeting on July 5\, we will watch three of these films (total 45 minutes)\, the ones on the Tundra\, Albedo\, and Forests. Following the films\, local climate leaders will discuss their reactions to these films\, why (and whether) understanding feedback loops is important to climate activists\, and how their particular organizations can use this information in their work. We will conclude with a whole group discussion.

SUMMARY:Coral Reefs & Climate: Sierra Club Monthly Climate Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Sierra Club will have its first in-person meeting in two and a half years Tuesday\, June 7 at 7 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church at 4700 Grover Ave. We will also stream the meeting via Zoom. Connect on Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \nCO2 levels have overshot 420 ppm for the first time in several million years. The climate crisis isn’t waiting for us to get our act together. The power of oil takes no time off. We need to act now! We need everyone who can to help in this fight. Come see if the Sierra Club has a role that fits what you want to do to fight climate change. Discussion: 7:00 – 7:30 pm\n \nPresentation: Coral Reefs and Climate Change by Juli Berwald\, author of Life on the Rocks and Spineless\, 7:30 – 8:30 pm\n \nCoral reefs are a microcosm of our planet: extra-ordinarily diverse\, deeply interconnected\, and full of wonders. When they’re thriving\, these fairy gardens hidden beneath the ocean’s surface burst with color and life. They sustain bountiful ecosystems and protect vulnerable coasts. But corals across the planet are in the middle of an unprecedented die-off\, beset by warming oceans\, pollution\, damage by humans\, and a devastating pandemic.
