SUMMARY:Austin Rally for the People's Utility Platform
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of the vote on Austin Energy’s proposed residential rate hike that could raise the rates on Austins already-struggling working class by hundreds of dollars per year\, organized labor\, climate\, and environmental justice groups are standing together to demand a platform for economic and environmental justice from Austin Energy. The co-sponsoring groups believe that our municipally-owned utility should use their public dollars to act in the public good. It is unacceptable that Austin Energy wants to raise rates for working families\, creates low-wage construction jobs with no safety training\, and furthers the rich-poor divide on clean energy access.Join us to demand that Austin Energy adopt the Peoples Utility Platform for economic and environmental justice.\n \nThe co-sponsoring groups believe that our municipally-owned utility should use their public dollars to act in the public good. It is unacceptable that Austin Energy wants to raise rates for working families\, creates low-wage construction jobs with no safety training\, and furthers the rich-poor divide on clean energy access.\n \nJoin us to demand that Austin Energy adopt the People’s Utility Platform for economic and environmental justice. This coalition calls on Austin Energy to: \nSTOP THE RATE HIKES. With rapidly rising costs\, working families are already struggling. It is unacceptable to raise residents’ electric bills by hundreds of dollars per year\, targeting the lowest income users and lowest energy users.\n \nEND EXPLOITATIVE CONDITIONS in Austin Energy power purchase agreements by committing to wage\, safety and training standards that keep construction workers safe. A publicly-owned utility should be creating safe\, family-sustaining jobs\, especially in a state like Texas where a construction worker loses their life\, on average\, once every 3 days due to unsafe working conditions.\n \nEXPAND THE USE OF CLEAN ENERGY and increase access to community solar and energy efficiency for renters and low-income households. Large-scale and local clean energy keeps our bills low and makes the grid more resilient.\n\n  \nWho: Texas Climate Jobs Action; Central Texas Building Trades; Texas AFL-CIO; AustinCentral Labor Council; IBEW Local 520; People Organized in Defense of Earth and herResources (PODER); Sierra Club- Lone Star Chapter; Sunrise Movement ATX; and local political/community leaders.

SUMMARY:People’s Hearing to #FixTheGrid in TX
DESCRIPTION:Register for the hearing and sign the petition at —> sc.org/FixTheGrid\n\n \nStill angry about the winter storm? Should you be angry about the Texas government blocking your input while bailing out the big companies that cause the death of hundreds of Texans? (The answer is definitely yes!)\n\n \nThe February winter storm killed hundreds of Texans. Now\, state regulators at the Public Utility Commission (which oversees ERCOT and the Texas electric grid) are following Abbott and allowing the companies that caused our suffering to determine the solutions for “fixing” the electric grid. We need state leaders to listen to everyday Texans and actually fix the electric grid – not to add more of the same old dirty fossil fuels that already froze.\n\n \nSince the PUC refuses to even try to carry out real public engagement\, we are doing it for them! Please join us for our own community hearing\, led by the people harmed by Winter Storm Uri\, to speak out and record testimony to ensure the PUC hears everything people lived through during the blackouts and what people throughout the state need.\nTogether we can organize to demonstrate massive statewide support for strengthening our energy grid without propping up climate disrupting fossil fuels.\n\n \nWith your help\, we can hold the Public Utility Commission accountable to the people of Texas\, and help build a cleaner\, safer\, more reliable future for us all.\n\n \nSpecifically\, Texas should invest in programs that strengthen our grid and help people stay safer in their homes.\nThese include:\n\n \nEnergy Efficiency Investments:\nPrograms that help people install new AC\, heaters\, and insulation in their homes. These lower electric bills\, keep people safe\, and reduce our energy use.\nInvestments in Renewable Energy like rooftop solar\, and wind + battery storage: Renewable energy can be critical during a freeze. Whether in homes or in a field\, these are low cost\, non polluting options that increase the reliability of the grid.\n\n \nEnergy Management Programs for Homes and Business:\nBy offering customers incentives to reduce energy usage when supplies are tight\, utilities can reduce costs for customers while ensuring that there is still enough energy to go around

SUMMARY:Legislative Workshop #3 - Who Holds Power at the Texas Capitol?
DESCRIPTION:Power concedes nothing without a demand. Frederick Douglass went on to describe that in order to win\, one must first be clear on what change you seek and who is preventing that change from happening. \nThe same can be said for climate justice and the Texas Legislature. As we try to influence decision makers operating in complex\, hard to access bureaucratic processes\, deep-pocketed fossil fuel industry associations spend vast amounts of money to deploy their lobbyists to work a system they know well and to ensure your legislators do their bidding. \nIf we want to win sweeping and bold change on climate justice\, we must know where and when to apply strategic pressure. \nIn that spirit\, Sierra Club\, Public Citizen\, and many other allies invite you to learn more about who really holds power and makes decisions on the critical environmental\, climate\, and social justice issues being discussed at the Capitol. \nJoin us for part 3 in our legislative activist training series and collaborate with like-minded Texans who are organizing for power in Texas.

SUMMARY:Climate Justice & the TX Legislature: Activist Training Series #1
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis demands bold action and strategies. To win in Texas\, we must collaborate with frontline communities to reduce pollution and work across the state for a just transition from an oil-based economy to one based on equity and clean energy.\n\n \nSaturday December 12th\, join with Sierra Club\, ATXEJ\, Texas Campaign for the Environment\, Action for a Responsible Railroad Commission\, Public Citizen and more climate movement allies for the first of a series of interactive discussions on how to hold our state leaders accountable to the people. Register here → https://bit.ly/txlegetraining\n\n \nYou will learn how to be a more effective citizen lobbyist\, how to contact your senators and representatives in covid-safe ways\, and have an opportunity to share your ideas and skills with other Texans who want to work for a cleaner and more just state.\n\n \nHistorically\, the Texas Legislature has been more of a friend to big polluters and the fossil industry than the working people of Texas concerned about dirty air\, high utility bills\, safety and climate change. If we’re going to hold the line against the deep pockets of fossil fuel corporations and their lobbyists\, we’ll need to continue to build a statewide movement of communities demanding climate and environmental justice.\n \n\nJoin us for the first in a months-long legislative activist training series to support folx in building connections with like-minded Texans around the state and to sharpen our collective focus and effectiveness in the Texas Legislature.\n\n \nRegister for our kickoff workshop on Saturday December 12th here → https://bit.ly/txlegetraining\nCan’t make it on the 12th? Register anyways and we’ll keep you posted about the upcoming follow-up workshops running January through March 2021.\n\nThis event is free and will take place on zoom.
