SUMMARY:Hike for Environmental Justice: Though La Loma Trail Up to Red Bluff
DESCRIPTION:From the Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association and the Sierra’s Club Environmental Justice Team –\nThe Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association (SANA) and Sierra Club’s Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) invite you to hike and learn about Red Bluff in East Austin. We’ll begin at the intersection of Jain Lane & Stuart Circle by the Walnut Creek Hike & Bike Trail @ 9am\, Saturday April 9th. To get there\, take Shady Lane east of Airport Blvd. It turns into Custer Rd and then into Jain Lane. We expect to arrive up on top of Red Bluff – located south of dead end on Harold Court @11am. Plan to return by the same route\, or shuttle to Harold Court. \nFor more than 50 years\, East Austin’s Red Bluff vista has been neglected and forgotten. Referred to as “East Austin’s Mt. Bonnell” and now home to dumped chemicals\, trash\, and oil\, it’s time to push the City of Austin to restore this beautiful place and to organize for justice. \nJoin us on April 9th for a morning hike through the La Loma trail up to Red Bluff and hear directly from longtime residents of the neighborhood about their relationship with this land\, and from other community activists and organizers about the history of Environmental Racism and injustice in East Austin. \nUp-to-date hike info here on Facebook —> http://bit.ly/redbluffhike \nA new video on the Red Bluff area will give you lots of background \nLearn about: \n\nA history of environmental racism in East Austin.\nGentrification and displacement of people of color in one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods.\nSafe trails and walking paths for students at Eastside Memorial High School.\nOrganizing for equitable and affordable community solar programs in East Austin.\nHow to be an ally in the fight for environmental and racial justice in communities of color.\n\nThis hike is open to all and will serve as a space for education and community organizing. Local filmmakers will also be on hand to document the hike and capture your impressions. Long term\, we are confident we can get the City to clean up La Loma\, but we aim to build a campaign that is centered on building power and supporting the demands and vision of residents in the Springdale-Airport neighborhood\, one of which is to turn the site into a nature preserve. \nTo learn more about SANA visit www.springdaleairport.org \nTo learn more about ATXEJ visit http://bit.ly/atxClimateTeam

SUMMARY:Austin Environmental Justice Flood Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Travis County is sending out dump trucks to pick up debris that is on the curb in Thoroughbred Farms. This means that we need YOUR help to kick that debris to the curb. We will hand out FEMA info\, an invite to a Christmas Party\, and clean up trash and debris in the neighborhood. Please join and invite friends. \nWear closed toe shoes and long sleeves. We are in need of the following items for the cleanup\, so please comment if you have access to these resources FOR FREE\, or if you have some to cover yourself. If not\, we have about 4 pairs of gloves and trash bags available for use: \n– trash bags\n– gloves\n– cups for water\n– coffee\n– containers to hold large batch of coffee\n– snacks\n– clipboard\n– pens \nBackground info – On October 30th\, 2015\, the community of Thoroughbred Farms (off FM 973 south of Bergstrom Airport) was hit with a literal wall of water. Almost month later\, the entire neighborhood is littered with debris and families are without basic needs\, surrounded by deplorable conditions. We’ve witnessed an outpouring of individual volunteer support\, some corporate aid\, and a tremendous failure by the government to help this community in need. \nOur objective is to mobilize support resources from the greater Austin community as we organize alongside the families directly impacted by the flood. The people of Thoroughbred Farms need your help. \nDonation resources/needs will be assessed via the survey form. But you can imagine what is needed: winter clothes of all sizes for children and adults\, shoes\, socks\, tooth brushes\, tooth paste\, shampoo\, soap\, tampons\, underwear (new)\, gift cards to places like Target/Goodwill/Walmart/HEB\, bug spray\, flea repellent\, thanksgiving food\, toys for the holidays\, etc. \nSurvivors\, please do not hesitate to tell us what you need. We will do our best to connect you to that need. \nVolunteers\, we need Spanish speakers to phone bank & converse with survivors on their options as well as go door to door\, we need help moving debris\, collecting trash in the area\, and delivering donations \nWe will be coordinating our efforts with area other non-profits.
