SUMMARY:30 years of Saving Our Springs
DESCRIPTION:On August 8th\,1992 Austin voters approved the SOS ordinance in “a landslide.” Read the headlines on Karen Kocher’s wonderful Barton Creek Timestream (http://ow.ly/iLb750Ka4Oo) and watch our original campaign video by Dean Rindy and others (http://ow.ly/FVaW50Ka4Om). It fully stands the test of time\, just like the SOS ordinance and the community that loves and supports our Hill Country land\, water and wildlife.\n\n\n \n\nNext Monday\, on August 8th\, we will celebrate 30 years of citizen action to save our springs at Barton Springs\, swimming and visiting all day and honoring the occasion with a bit of music\, refreshments\, and ceremony at the front gate from 6 to 7:30 p.m.\n\n\n \n\nThe Minor Mishap Marching Band will kick off the event\, and Mr. Habitat\, Bill Oliver\, will be there to lead a few rounds of Barton Springs Eternal.\n\n\n \n\nPlease come reconnect or connect for the first time.\n\n\n \n\nWith your help we will finish what we started 30 years ago in the days\, weeks\, months\, and years ahead. It takes a community to save a community spring!\n\n\n \n\nAnd in the meantime\, don’t forget the fabulous Sacred Springs Kite Exhibit at Austin’s downtown library (http://ow.ly/XHVh50Ka4On).

SUMMARY:Barton Springs Eternal Reunion
DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association and the Save Our Springs Alliance –\nIn April 1992 a group of Austin musicians\, artists and activists recorded the song “Barton Springs Eternal” (by Bill Oliver)\, in a colorful\, fun-filled two day session at Cedar Creek Studios in South Austin. The video version has now been edited (thanks to Jenny Clark and Fred Remmert) into a lively\, all star Austin effort that retains the energy of the era and the importance of the movement. At the time\, a 17 minute video documentary\, “I Sung for the Springs” about the session was produced for ACTV by Jenny Clark. That program has been revived from the city archives\, dusted off\, and digitized! \nThis calls for a celebration! We’re hosting a “video launch and reunion party” for Thursday\, June 21\, 6–8 and 8-10 (two shows) at Threadgill’s South. We’ll show the videos\, and have a sound system in place for any “special guests” musicians to perform. Bob Livingston and Bill Oliver will kick off the music. This will be a fun reunion\, an update on current Barton Springs issues from SOS / SBCA and a great party! \nHosted by Bill Oliver\, Bob Livingston\, Save Barton Springs\, Save Barton Creek\nYou can view the music video here: https://youtu.be/sdtMZs7ISnU \nYou can view the documentary video here: https://youtu.be/CCUintWdzl4 \nYou can purchase Barton Springs Eternal here:https://sosalliance.bandcamp.com/track/barton-springs-eternal

Come learn some important Austin history about citizen efforts to protect our favorite “swimming hole!” \nEntitled “Common Ground: The Battle for Barton Springs\,” this half-hour 1993 documentary chronicles the 18-month process that resulted in the citizen-led petition drive to enhance water quality protections for Barton Springs. Lee Road) before dusk. Screening begins at full darkness\, roughly 8:25pm and will last half an hour. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Before or after the screening\, take a swim in the Springs!

SUMMARY:Code - What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club\, Save Our Springs Alliance\, Community Not Commodity\, and Communities of Color United –\nAustin’s current land use code is rooted in its history of racism and inequity. The City is currently re-writing the code through the process they’ve called CodeNEXT. That re-write will impact every person in Austin: our homes\, businesses\, roads\, taxes\, parking\, and our environment. Rather than ignore our history\, Austin’s next Land Development Code must be informed by honest dialogue. \nHear from community leaders whose neighborhoods have been torn apart by Austin’s development policies and ravaged by flooding. Join us to plan how to protect our people and our environment\, and elevate our community’s needs above those of developers and politicians. \nParticipating organizations will be tabling and distributing literature. Small breakout sessions will allow for robust discussions. We’ll end the day with opportunities to organize with your neighbors and take immediate action. Come learn about CodeNEXT and grow efforts to improve Austin’s land use policies. \nSchedule of events: \n2pm – 2:30pm – Welcome and introduction \n2:30pm – 3:15pm – Breakout session on the Environment \n3:15pm – 4:00pm – Breakout session on Economic Development \n4pm – 4:45pm – Breakout session on Neighborhoods \n4:45pm – 5pm – Closing remarks \n5pm – 6pm – Food and respite – an unstructured opportunity to organize with fellow participants \n* The event will be held in the cafeteria of Southwest Key Programs * \nParticipating organizations (so far) include: \nAustin Neighborhoods Council\nClean Water Action\nCommunities of Color United\nCommunity Not Commodity\nLa Raza Roundtable\nPODER – People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources\nSave Our Springs Alliance\nSierra Club – Austin Regional Group\nStanding Up for Racial Justice Austin\nWorkers Defense Project \nContact the organizers if you’d like to add your group! \n***Childcare and translation services will be available free of charge.
