SUMMARY:SBCA June Virtual Happy Hour with Austin Water Utilities
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY 6/13 @ 7pm on Zoom Monthly Happy Hour is back! \nThanks for staying tuned as we took a break last month. This June we are joined by Helen Gerlach and Marisa Flores-Gonzalez of City of Austin’s Water Utilities Department. Helen and Marisa will be discussing Austin Water’s Aquifer Storage Recovery Project. ASR is a storage strategy that other water utilities in Texas and around the world use to store water in a natural aquifer when it is available during wet times\, and withdraw the stored water during times when other supplies are needed. ASR will improve Austin’s climate resiliency as a second source of water in drought or emergency situations. Invite your friends and see you there!

Our speakers will explain:\n• How Stephen Cleveland’s sewage plant will harm Barton Creek\n• How TCEQ’s permit approval process works\n• How you can tell TCEQ you’re against Cleveland’s permit\n\n \nSpeakers will include:\n• Chris Herrington\, Environmental Officer for the city of Austin\n• Angela Richter\, Executive Director\, Save Barton Creek Association\n• Kelly Davis\, Staff Attorney\, Save Our Springs Alliance\n• Brian Zabcik\, Wastewater Campaign Organizer\, Save Barton Creek Association\n\n \nTreatment plants don’t remove all of the pollutants from the sewage they dump into streams. This partially treated sewage still contains phosphorus and nitrogen\, which are fertilizers that have caused massive algae growths in Hill Country streams. In our area\, huge algae blooms have grown immediately below sewage plants on the Blanco River and on the South San Gabriel River. A study by the city of Austin has estimated that if Stephen Cleveland’s plant is built\, it could significantly increase the risk of algae growth for many miles on Barton Creek.\n\n \nAt the SBCA meeting\, you’ll learn how to submit a public comment to TCEQ opposing Cleveland’s plant. You’ll also learn what you need to know to attend the only meeting where TCEQ will listen to what the public has to say about Cleveland’s plant :\nTCEQ PUBLIC MEETING ON LONG BRANCH SEWAGE PLANT\n7pm\, Tuesday\, April 20th\nOnline: https://www.gotomeeting.com/webinar/join-webinar\nEnter webinar ID: 189-821-291\n\n \nBarton Creek is one of our area’s most scenic and popular attractions. But we need your help to keep the creek as natural as possible. Tell TCEQ that you’re against Stephen Cleveland’s sewage plant.

SUMMARY:Oak Hill History Discussion with Heritage Interpretive Consultant Clark Hancock
DESCRIPTION:How do you tell the story of the past through the preservation of place? Who gets to decide what places are worth protecting? Join Clark Hancock\, Heritage Interpretive Consultant\, as he investigates these ideas as they relate to the past and future of Oak Hill. \nThe identity of Oak Hill has come under threat from TxDot’s plans for a mega-highway and other urbanization pressures drawing into question the future safety of historic structures erected over a hundred years ago. Before that legacy is erased forever\, there are some things we should consider. What multi-faceted stories and lessons do this crossroad and its artifacts provide? How can those stories and lessons be preserved so those that come after are given the opportunity to decide for themselves the significance of this heritage? \nJoin the conversation as we explore these questions and more… before it is too late.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and its Effects on Floods in Texas Happy Hour with Raymond Slade
DESCRIPTION:Catastrophic-flooding threats are arguably as severe in Central Texas as anywhere in the country. Many of the largest storms produce catastrophic flooding thus deeming the area to be “Flash Flood Alley”. The area is characterized by fast-developing intense storms\, some of which have produced world-record rainfall depths. Also\, geographic characteristics such as thin soils and steep land slopes contribute substantially to the flooding. However\, perhaps the most substantial flooding threat is from easterly moving storms which often follow basin orientation—such storms can overlie and move with channel flooding thus causing immense increases in downstream flood peaks. Nevertheless\, floods are merely a hazard—mankind is the disaster. For example\, the area often leads the nation in drowning deaths and flood-damage costs–about 300\,000 people reside within the 100-year floodplain in the five-county IH 35 corridor from Williamson to Bexar County.\n \n\nAdditionally\, climate change likely is increasing the flooding threat. For example\, linear temporal-trend analyses of data for all 14 long-term NOAA hourly rainfall gages in Central Texas indicate annual- maximum 6-hour storm depths to have increased by a mean value of 19 percent during the past 60 years. Most of the increases are deemed to be statistically significant at the 90-percent confidence level. Also\, analyses of data for all 19 gages in the area infer annual-maximum 2-day storm depths to have increased by 16 percent over the past 70 years. Even small increases in large storm depths can cause large increases in peak discharges because\, for such storms\, most of the increased rainfall becomes runoff rather than ground infiltration or basin attenuation. For example\, analyses of data for 15 long-term streamflow gages in the area document annual-peak discharges to have increased by a mean value of 72 percent during the past 60 years. Analyses of the largest of the annual-peak discharges indicate such peaks to have even greater increases. Finally\, based on the trend analyses\, the flooding threat in Central Texas is expected to increase even more in the future.\n\n \nJoin us as we talk with Raymond Slade\, Certified Professional Hydrologist\, and learn more about this important topic and his upcoming publication!

SUMMARY:No Dumping Sewage Report Preview Happy Hour with Brian Zabcik
DESCRIPTION:Sewage pollution in the Hill Country is getting worse. An upcoming SBCA report has found that 88% of all sewage treatment plants in the region have dumped more pollutants into streams than their permits allow. Still\, developers continue to apply for new discharge permits. \nJoin us for a discussion with Brian Zabcik\, the report’s author and SBCA’s Wastewater Campaign Coordinator. He’ll give a special preview of the report before it’s released. He’ll also explain how SBCA is working with other environmental groups to promote stricter sewage rules for the Hill Country. \nBrian is the former Clean Water Advocate at Environment Texas\, where he focused on promoting green infrastructure features like rain gardens and rain harvesting to stop runoff pollution. \nHe also helped write a GI resolution enacted by the Austin City Council and a GI bill passed by the Texas Legislature. Additionally\, he authored a report on municipal stormwater policies in Texas and co-authored a report on bacteria pollution in the state’s waterways. \nJoin us for this enlightening presentation with Brian! SUMMARY:Barton Creek Timestream Exhibit Virtual Tour and Q & A Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join Save Barton Creek Association and our friends at Living Springs\, as we take a walk through time and discover the history of advocacy that saved Barton Creek! Hear from Barton Creek Time Stream creators Karen Kocher and Monica Flores\, and folks that were there when it all happened. We will finish with a Q and A. \nTens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the nearly 14-mile Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin\, Texas\, but few know the tumultuous history behind its creation and preservation. The Barton Creek Time Stream exhibit shares these stories of 50+ years\, featuring 40+ events and profiles 80+ individuals who worked to establish and preserve this unique green space for the people of Austin. \nThe physical onsite exhibit consists of: \nThe Time Stream Collage: a 12-foot timeline recreating the last 50+ years of Barton Creek stewardship efforts through curated photographs\, newspaper articles\, poster art\, and other ephemera with descriptive text.\nStewards Collage: a wall-sized photomontage featuring photographic portraits of the many stewards of Barton Creek. A set of binders contains the many stories of the more than 80 individuals who have participated in stewardship efforts over the last 50 years. \nA four-sided kiosk featuring: \n•current and future threats to Barton Creek and offering a way to connect to local groups who are working to protect the watershed. \n•a matching game to help the community identify native and non-native species of plants on the Barton Creek greenbelt. \n• A series of large-format archival photographs of Barton Creek by professional photographers Ford Lowcock\, Charles Kruvand and Rob Greebon. \n•A summary essay written by journalist and former city official\, Daryl Slusher. \nThe Barton Creek Time Stream exhibit is a project of the Living Springs documentary series in collaboration with the Save Barton Creek Association and City of Austin’s Splash! exhibit at the Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center. The exhibit is generously supported by The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division\, the Austin Community Foundation\, the Still Water Foundation and the Texas Fund for the Environment. \nYou don’t want to miss this unique educational and inspirational event! SUMMARY:Bluegrass and Beer- Keep Sewage Out of Barton Creek!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Save Barton Creek Association and the Texas Brewshed Alliance –\nCome to Bluegrass and Beer to listen to bluegrass music and learn more about how sewage pollution is threatening Long Branch\, Barton Creek\, and waterways across the Hill Country. The informational program about the sewage pollution problem and ways to get involved will start at 7 PM. Throughout the event\, beer and food is available for purchase. \nWe invite those that want to learn more\, want to know how to get involved\, or just wanting to have a fun Friday night to join us! Let’s work together to protect our Central Texas creeks. \nAll pours of Petit Prince beer will benefit Save Barton Creek Association’s (SBCA) work against sewage pollution! Additional donations are accepted and donations can be made prior to the event through our Go Fund Me page www.gofundme.com/f/keep-sewage-out-of-barton-creek. \nA special thanks to the Texas Brewshed Alliance and Jester King Brewery for organizing this event with us. \nMore about the Campaign: \nA wastewater discharge permit has been filed\, seeking permission to dump sewage effluent into the Long Branch tributary of Barton Creek. This would cause algae blooms\, risks to aquatic life\, and potential danger to recreational users downstream. There has never been a discharge of wastewater effluent in the contributing zone of the sensitive Edwards Aquifer. One individual’s profit motive shouldn’t be allowed to ruin the creek for the miles of downstream users. \nUnfortunately this pollution threat is not limited to this single permit. Our friends are fighting similar threats into waterways region-wide including in the Blanco River and Honey Creek. \nThat’s why SBCA and others formed the No Dumping Sewage campaign prevent the direct discharge of sewage into our creeks and advocate for better wastewater management. This campaign is a group effort with several other organizations including Wimberley Valley Watershed Alliance\, Clean Water Action\, and Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance. Learn more: https://nodumpingsewage.org \nWe hope to see you at the event and thank you for your support.
