SUMMARY:PODER Celebrates 35 Years of Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:PODER CELEBRATES 35 YEARS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE  We invite you to join us on Friday\, May 1\, to commemorate the day PODER was founded 35 years ago. In 1991\, a group of Chicana/o organizers from East Austin formed PODER to increase residents’ participation in corporate and governmental decisions related to environmental hazards and their impact on Eastside neighborhoods. Our celebration offers an opportunity for us to reflect on the struggles and victories we’ve had for over three decades. Alongside many community members and organizations\, we’ve fought fuel storage tanks\, power plants\, garbage truck facilities\, upzoning\, unaffordable housing\, displacement\, and the destruction of green spaces.PODER continues to rise up for equitable education and economic development\, the preservation of working-class neighborhoods built over generations\, basic human rights\, and environmental justice. The struggle is long and continuous.Dinner will be provided\, and together\, we’ll dance! Tickets here bit.ly/PODER35 — $25 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:The Shifting Goals of Public Transportation
DESCRIPTION:PODER (People Organized In Defense of Earth and Her Resources) and La Raza Roundtable are hosting “The Shifting Goals Of Public Transportation.” \nBelow is the event description: \nCapital Metro has made major changes to transit service in Austin over the last few years. The agency has increasingly shed its social redistributive goals in favor of alleviating congestion\, promoting the development of eco-districts\, and exploring privatized alternatives in Austin. Disability rights activists\, the homeless\, and lower income and immigrant neighborhoods slated to lose bus service have raised serious concerns over this shift. Simone Yoxall will discuss the ways these changes represent a threat to the city’s most vulnerable and transit-dependent populations and intersect with other justice issues\, particularly gentrification and displacement\, to reproduce uneven mobilities and precarity along racial and class lines in Austin.
