SUMMARY:MEASURE Bill Hearing
DESCRIPTION:According to a recent study\, Black and brown children are more likely to be suspended or expelled from Texas schools than white students. For example\, a statewide study from the 2018-2019 school year showed Texas’ schools disciplined Black students nearly five times the rate of white students\, even though Black students made up only 13.48% of the school’s student population. This disturbing data is just a snapshot of the ongoing racial inequalities in Texas’s school systems—and the consequences are troubling. Research shows that suspension and expulsion can lead to learning setbacks\, a higher risk of dropout\, and a higher risk of involvement in the school-to-prison pipeline.\n\n \nWhile Texas schools have implemented some steps to try to address these inequalities\, they admit (and the numbers show) progress has been slow\, which leaves many Black and brown children at risk of falling victim to the inadequacies and biases of the system. Caregivers are often helpless when it comes to school discipline. They have little to no information readily available to them on whether their child’s school is more likely to discipline their child based on the child’s sex or race.\n \n\nThe MEASURE Bill (HB 3485) asks schools to share data with caregivers directly in a reader-friendly way to allow them to make informed decisions about their child’s education and to help combat disciplinary action disparity.\nIf you would like more information about this very important measure\, please email hello@wemeasure.org or visit TheMeasureBill.org. You can watch this hearing online at house.texas.gov.

SUMMARY:“Hey Sis! It’s Storytime!”
DESCRIPTION:We’re proud to announce an interactive virtual storytime featuring a live reading of the newly published Hey Sis! Be You! comic book. The comic tells the story of the first Black woman President\, Grace\, and strives to embolden and empower Black girls everywhere to be their most authentic\, beautiful\, and awesome selves. \nHey Sis! It’s Storytime!” We’ll also be hosting breakout groups where you can connect with other listeners\, engage in meaningful family conversations\, and inspire Black Girl Magic. SUMMARY:Disrupting Adultification Bias To Protect Black Girls
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar training led by Jacqueline Miller as we explore the different methods of adultification bias\, intersections and it’s impact. You’ll acquire knowledge on how to apply practical lessons learned in your place of work as well as at home as we fight against the unfair treatment of Black girls. \nThree dominant paradigms of Black femininity that originated in the South during the period of slavery have persisted into present-day culture\, which “paint Black females as hypersexual\, boisterous\, aggressive\, and unscrupulous”: \n• Sapphire (e.g.\, emasculating\, loud\, aggressive\, angry\, stubborn\, and unfeminine); \n• Jezebel (e.g.\, hypersexualized\, seduc- tive and exploiter of men’s weak- nesses); and \n• Mammy (e.g.\, self-sacrificing\, nurturing\, loving\, asexual). \nThese images and historical stereotypes of Black women have real-life consequences for Black girls today. For example\, “teachers may subconsciously use stereotypical images of Black females … to interpret Black girls’ behaviors and respond more harshly to Black girls who display behaviors that do not align with traditional standards of femininity in which girls are expected to be docile\, diffident\, and selfless.” Such “tainted perceptions … result in patterns of discipline intended to reform the femininity of Black girls into something more ‘acceptable. \nMEASURE will continue our work to eliminate adultification bias by unpacking the “sapphire” stereotype in which still results in the unfair treatment of Black girls. \nPresented by Jacqueline Miller\, Founder of Healthy Actions Intervening Responsibly

SUMMARY:Disrupting Adultification Bias: A Living Room Chat!
DESCRIPTION:Youth + Adult Conversation| \nThree dominant paradigms of Black femininity that originated in the South during the period of slavery have persisted into present-day culture\, which “paint Black females as hypersexual\, boisterous\, aggressive\, and unscrupulous”: \n• Sapphire (e.g.\, emasculating\, loud\, aggressive\, angry\, stubborn\, and unfeminine);\n• Jezebel (e.g.\, hypersexualized\, seduc- tive and exploiter of men’s weak- nesses); and\n• Mammy (e.g.\, self-sacrificing\, nurturing\, loving\, asexual). \nThese images and historical stereotypes of Black women have real-life consequences for Black girls today. For example\, “teachers may subconsciously use stereotypical images of Black females … to interpret Black girls’ behaviors and respond more harshly to Black girls who display behaviors that do not align with traditional standards of femininity in which girls are expected to be docile\, diffident\, and selfless.” Such “tainted perceptions … result in patterns of discipline intended to reform the femininity of African-American girls into something more ‘acceptable. \nThis interactive community data-gathering will ask participants 4 questions that will help to inform the work of the collaborative project\, The Innocence Initiative. Youth are encouraged to join this living room conversation.
