SUMMARY:Building Green Justice through the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with Raasin in the Sun and the Mural Arts Institute – Philadelphia\n \nHuston-Tillotson University’s Building Green Justice Forum invites you to a Community Conversation where we will consider the role of the arts in helping us to envision the environmentally just futures we want to bring about.\n \nEnvironmental justice work is more critical than ever. Activists\, scholars\, students\, community members\, and policy makers continue to battle the many challenges of environmental racism even as climate change accelerates and inequality gaps widen. When so much of our focus is directed to addressing injustices\, it can be difficult to connect to a motivating vision of justice. Join us as we look to the arts for sources of inspiration\, healing\, reconciliation\, and motivation in imagining an environmentally just world. We will also discuss an EJ mural to be installed on the Huston-Tillotson campus.\n \nWe will have a short presentation followed by breakouts incorporating discussion and creative expression. Pizza\, drinks and snacks will be served. Free and open to the public! You can RSVP here.\n \nLocation: Dickey-Lawless auditorium on the Huston-Tillotson campus.\n \nDriving/parking directions: Please park in the guest parking lot on Chalmers avenue between 7th and 11 streets and enter campus via the pedestrian gate (this is the West entrance on the map below). The D-L building is on the southwest corner of campus.

SUMMARY:Building Green Justice Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:Huston-Tillotson University presents the 8th annual Building Green Justice Forum on Tuesday\, October 12th\, 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm via Whova.\n\n \nThis year’s theme is “Repair\, Regeneration\, and Reparations.”\n\n \nFull event details and registration:\nhttps://whova.com/web/hebgj_202110/\n\n \nRepair and regeneration have complementary but distinct biological definitions. Repair prevents an injury from spreading and re-establishes basic support; regeneration is a complete renewal of function that restores components by rebuilding them anew. We can envision how both definitions apply to environmental justice work\, from science and policy to advocacy and community resilience.\n\n \nThe concept of reparations further challenges us to assess the current state of the environment and examine reparations in environmental contexts. How can we renew systems and processes while accounting for the cascading damages of the past? Can a focus on immediate repair hinder long-term regeneration? Is renewal of any system possible without reparations? And how might we use these concepts to enact environmental justice work that is inclusive and transformative?\nWe are pleased to welcome Dr. Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò as our keynote speaker this year. Dr. Táíwò is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University. His recent book\, “Reconsidering Reparations\,” proposes a new grounding for reparations\, especially environmental reparations.\n\n \nJoin fellow environmental scholars\, activists\, community members\, and HT faculty\, students and staff for a keynote talk from Dr. Táíwò\, followed by a discussion panel and workshops.\n\n \nThe Building Green Justice Forum is free. Register today!

SUMMARY:Building Green Justice Forum 2019: Potential Through Place
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Huston-Tillotson University –\nThe modern environmental justice movement is rooted in the galvanizing recognition that our fates are linked to the places we live and work…and that often for people of color\, those places are ignored\, under-resourced\, and overly burdened with polluted air\, water\, and soil. And yet these places are also home to the environmental justice community’s pride\, strength\, and motivation. Place holds multiple meanings. In the sciences\, we often describe an organism’s place in its ecosystem with two parameters: its habitat (physical location) and its niche (role in the community). From those two dimensions\, a complexity of interactions emerge which define sources of both resilience and vulnerability. Our human ecosystem is no different. \nThis year at BGJF\, we want to examine the layered ways that place speaks to EJ history\, identity\, and\, perhaps most importantly\, our potential to transform the entire environmental movement to center equity. Through speakers\, workshops\, and focused discussions at this year’s forum\, we will lay out the locations and roles that define EJ’s place today and where and how it can grow in impact and in resilient strength. \nWe are thrilled to announce this year’s keynote speaker: Professor Chris Schell\, University of Washington\, Tacoma \nChris Schell is an urban ecologist whose research integrates evolutionary theory with ecological application to disentangle the processes accentuating human-carnivore conflict. Specifically\, Chris’ interests lie in understanding the endocrine mechanisms that underpin carnivore behavior\, as well as explicitly examining the anthropogenic drivers (i.e. human densities\, roadways\, pollution\, interactions) that select for bold\, habituated\, and less fearful individuals in metropolitan areas. His research is uniquely tied to the community: urban ecology is inherently a synergy of anthropogenic forces and natural processes. Hence\, he often works closely with underrepresented communities\, wildlife managers\, cultural institutions\, and philanthropic organizations to help foster mutually enriching relationships among people and wildlife. \nForum is free and open to the public. You can RSVP here. \nEvents will run 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM on the Huston-Tillotson University campus. \nForum Schedule: \n\n8:00-8:30 am Arrival and Light Breakfast\n8:30-9:00 am Forum Welcome – HT President Colette Pierce Burnette and Forum Co-Organizers Dr. Karen Magid and Dr. Amanda Masino\n9:00-9:30 am – Opening Speaker – Dr. Rosalee Martin\n9:30-9:45 am – Local Organization Spotlight\n9:45-11:25 am – Panel discussion\n11:30 am-12:30 pm – Lunch (provided\, vegetarian options available)\n12:30-1:45 pm – Keynote speaker – Dr. Chris Schell\, University of Washington-Tacoma\n2:00-3:00 pm – concurrent Workshops 1\n3:00-4:00 pm – concurrent Workshops 2\n\nLight breakfast and lunch will be provided. This year\, we are excited to share that workshops\, speaker sessions\, and participant feedback will be used to generate instructional tools for HT’s new Environmental Justice academic program. You\, our BGJ community\, will become part of the EJ curriculum to train our next environmental justice leaders at HT! \n\n\n\nMore details on featured speakers and conference schedule to come. You can RSVP here.\n \nAll events will take place on the Huston-Tillotson University campus\, 900 Chicon St.\, Austin\, TX 78702.

SUMMARY:Building Green Justice Forum 2017
DESCRIPTION:From Huston-Tillotson University –\nHuston-Tillotson University will host the fourth annual Building Green Justice Forum\, with this year’s theme being “Organic Activistology.” We are inviting presenters and participants to reflect on their roles as organic activists – thinkers and doers who reflect their community’s history\,values\, and knowledge and who engage to direct the community as leaders and organizers. This exploration includes an analysis of the broader frame of environmental justice work\, including tensions\, conflicts\, power sources\, intersectionalities\, and motivations. We want to use this model of activism to understand environmental justice history and draw lessons for the future of the work. \nThe forum is brought to you by Huston-Tillotson University\, Green is the New Black\, and the Dumpster Project. Please contact the organizers http://tinyurl.com/bgj2017 for more information on presenting\, sponsoring\, and attending. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
