DESCRIPTION:From Huston-Tillotson University\, City of Austin Office of Sustainability\, Green Is the New Black\, the Dumpster Project\, and the Third Coast Activist Resource Center –\n\n\n\nHuston-Tillotson University is hosting the 5th annual Building Green Justice Forum on Tuesday\, October 16th. This year’s theme is “Power\, Discourse\, and Community.” The ways that we think and talk about environment\, justice\, and community affect how we create and access knowledge and power. Join us as we apply environmental justice principles to challenge conventional environmental movement approaches to knowledge and power across economic\, literary\, political\, religious and scientific/technological frameworks. This year\, we are excited to share that workshops\, speaker sessions\, and participant feedback will be used to generate instructional tools for HT’s new Environmental Justice academic program. DESCRIPTION:From Green Is The New Black –\nMonday\, April 16\, 6:00-8:00 pm\nBeverly Wright on “The Power of Environmental Justice” \nBeverly Wright\, founder and Executive Director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice\, has for decades worked throughout the Southern United States to develop minority leadership for environmental\, social\, and economic justice along the Mississippi River Chemical Corridor and Gulf Coast Region. Wright\, a professor of sociology at Dillard University in New Orleans\, will speak about how local power can be the driving force for action on environmental injustice\, but comes with tension and pain when communities are left to do this largely on their own. Are we doing enough to ensure justice is infused into community resilience projects that seek to build local power? \nLocation: Dickey-Lawless Science Building\, Huston-Tillotson University\, 900 Chicon St.\, Austin\, 78702\, with free parking in the Chalmers Avenue lot and free street parking around campus.

DESCRIPTION:Green is the New Black\, a sustainability-focused student organization at Huston-Tillotson University\, is hosting a free film screening on February 10th. Snacks will be provided by the HT Student Government Association. The event is open the general public and will be held in the DL Auditorium.  The film that will be screened is\, “Plastic Paradise.” \nAbout “Plastic Paradise” : \nThousands of miles away from civilization\, Midway Atoll is in one of the most remote places on earth. And yet its become ground zero for The Great Pacific Garbage Patch\, syphoning plastics from three distant continents. In this independent documentary film\, journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover this mysterious phenomenon. Along the way she meets scientists\, researchers\, influencers\, and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption and learns the problem is more insidious than we could have ever imagined.
