SUMMARY:Growing Local Food from Google’s Campus to Guam: Food Futures Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Food + City –\nFood+City Food Futures Speaker Series:\nFood+City is excited to announce our final Food Futures speaker series event of the 2018-2019 academic year. Brad McNamara of Freight Farms will join our Director/Founder Robyn Metcalfe\, food historian and food futurist\, to discuss what trends and challenges are affecting indoor food production\, and how his company has made their name in shipping container farming. \nYou can RSVP here. \nBrad McNamara \nWith a background in sustainability and business\, Brad McNamara is the CEO and co-founder of Freight Farms\, the agtech company that first established the hydroponic vertical container farming industry. Founded in 2010\, Freight Farms’ technology enables the year-round growth of fresh food anywhere on the globe\, regardless of climate\, using 95% less water than traditional agriculture. The company now has the largest network of connected farms in the world\, with a diverse range of global customers including Google\, Ford\, Kimbal Musk’s Square Roots\, restaurants\, schools\, and independent farmers from Boston to Guam. The company’s latest launch of the Greenery with integrated data platform farmhand\, advances industry-wide limits of hydroponic vertical farming across yield\, resource efficiency\, and automation – making decentralized farming more accessible than ever before. \nBrad McNamara and Jon Friedman saw a need for urban agriculture to emerge as a competitive industry in the food landscape. They began by focusing on rooftop greenhouses\, but quickly realized that\, to achieve their goals\, they needed a modular and scalable solution. In an effort to cut down on costs and logistics\, Brad and Jon began to seriously consider building their new technology inside shipping containers. Not only were containers widely available\, but they would allow farms to exist in areas that couldn’t support traditional methods. As a result\, Freight Farms was born with the mission of building the infrastructure and technology that can allow local food to thrive. \nWhen Brad and Jon started Freight Farms\, there was no “Ag Tech” industry – they weren’t even sure how to explain the concept to friends and family! Fast forward to 2019. Agriculture technology has emerged as a fast-growing industry with Freight Farms at the forefront. Not only was Freight Farms one of the first companies to emerge as an Ag Tech leader\, but it was the first to build a farm inside of a shipping container\, and–with the launch of the Greenery in February–the first to iterate on the original design. —from Freight Farms website \nParking options: \nPlatinum Parking\, 2438 Guadalupe St\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 5 minute walk \nUniversity Co-op Parking Garage\, 2214 San Antonio St\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 6 min walk \nSan Jacinto Garage\, 2400 San Jacinto Blvd\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 10 min walk \nStreet parking is limited\, but there are Pay to Park ($1/hr) spaces along Dean Keeton. \nLocation: \nUniversity of Texas at Austin \nMary E. SUMMARY:Food + City Expo\, Student Challenge\, And Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:From Food + City –\nFood+City Expo\, Student Challenge & Speaker Series at UT \nJoin us for this exciting event on the University of Texas at Austin Campus. We will kick off the afternoon’s events with your chance to network with all 14 startups participating in this year’s Startup Challenge. Then we will watch pitches from three innovative student startups founded at UT Austin\, and the judges will award a winner. We will conclude the event with our Speaker Series guest Dr. Johanna Mendelson Forman. \n  \nMendelson Forman is a Scholar in Residence at American University’s School of International Service where she teaches Conflict Cuisine: An Introduction to War and Peace around the Dinner Table. Connecting war and food is something that came from her recognition that in Washington you could tell where there were wars by the number of new ethnic restaurants that opened here. This inspired her recent work on conflict cuisines as tool for teaching how food is a form of Smart Power as well as a driver of conflict. It also linked two subjects\, food and conflict\, in a new interdisciplinary way that makes it easier to understand why in zones of conflict food becomes central to both survival and resilience. An expert on the post-conflict transition and democratization issues\, she has regional expertise in the Americas\, with a special focus on the Caribbean\, Central America and Brazil. She also has had extensive field experience in the U.S. government on transition initiatives in Haiti\, Iraq\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her deep experience as a policy maker on conflict and stabilization efforts from Haiti to Rwanda led her to this effort to connect food with conflict. \nWe are excited to announce our amazing sponsors for this event; Jaime’s Spanish Village\, Peatos\, and Tiff’s Treats. Make sure to grab some chips & salsa\, a cheesy Peatos snack bag\, and/or a warm cookie while networking with our Startup teams\, watching the student pitches\, and listening to Johanna Mendelson Forman’s inspiring talk. \nSchedule of Events \n4:00pm – Networking with the 2019 Food+City Cohort\n5:00pm – Student Challenge Pitches\n5:30pm – Speaker Series with special guest\, Dr. Johanna Mendelson\, followed by winner announcement! \n\nThe remaining pitches and rewards will take place at Startup Challenge Showcase the following day on Monday\, March 11th. \nParking options: \nPlatinum Parking\, 2438 Guadalupe St\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 5 minute walk \nUniversity Co-op Parking Garage\, 2214 San Antonio St\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 6 min walk \nSan Jacinto Garage\, 2400 San Jacinto Blvd\, Austin\, TX 78705 – 10 min walk \nStreet parking is limited\, but there are Pay to Park ($1/hr) spaces along Dean Keeton.
