SUMMARY:Texas Nature and Clean Energy Summit
DESCRIPTION:Texas is growing fast\, and our land and wildlife are feeling the strain. Pollution and decades of energy development have left lasting marks on prairies\, rivers\, and coastal habitats. Clean\, renewable energy is essential to powering Texas’ future without repeating those harms. But how we build it matters. The choices we make now will shape the Texas landscape and its wildlife for generations. \nThe Nature and Clean Energy Summit will bring together conservation leaders and clean energy practitioners to examine how we protect land\, air\, water and wildlife while meeting growing energy needs. The Summit will highlight practical examples of impact mitigation\, policy ideas to promote renewables while protecting nature\, and address a growing challenge: proposals for moratoriums and restrictive policies that would halt renewable energy development rather than improve it \nYou can register here. \nGuest Speakers:\nAndy Sansom\, former Executive Director\, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department\nDr. Michael Webber\, Professor and Clean Energy Technology Expert\, UT Austin\nJudd Messer\, Vice President\, Advanced Power Alliance\nStacy Ortego\, Gulf of Mexico Campaign Manager\, National Wildlife Federation

SUMMARY:Dogs for Clean Water rally
DESCRIPTION:7 dog deaths from exposure to toxic algae blooms while swimming in our lakes. Half our creeks with unsafe levels of fecal bacteria. Two boil water notices in three years.\n\n \nAustin has a water pollution problem. Bring your dog (or come by yourself!) down to Auditorium Shores for a press conference to call on City Council to take action to clean up our waterways.\n\n \nOne major source of pollution is stormwater runoff. As we pave over more of the city\, rain can’t soak into the ground. Instead it rushes along the concrete\, picking up dog poop\, fertilizer and other pollutants and pushing it all into creeks and lakes.\n\n \nNature-based infrastructure\, including rain gardens and green roofs\, allows rainwater to soak into the ground\, slowing it down and filtering out pollution.\n\n \nCity staff proposed important code changes to require nature based infrastructure on commercial properties\, close loopholes that allow old developments to avoid pollution controls\, and reduce water polluting sprawl by encouraging in fill development.\n \nWe need City Council to take up these proposals and implement them immediately. They won’t completely solve the problem\, but they’ll help a lot and they’re something we can do right now.\n\n \nLet’s build a more natural Austin and guarantee healthy waters for our families\, pets\, and wildlife.

SUMMARY:Meet Texas' top Black environmental leaders: A chat with John Beard
DESCRIPTION:This Black History Month we’re talking with some of Texas’ top Black environmental leaders. This week\, we speak with John Beard\, Jr.\, Founder\, Chairman and CEO of the Port Arthur Community Action Network\, a community based\, environmental justice non-profit. PACAN advocates for solutions that reduce or eliminate environmental and public health hazards\, promotes community development and improvements to the quality of life in Port Arthur. Prior to founding PACAN\, John worked in the refining industry for 38 years.\n \n\nLast year\, PACAN secured a settlement with Motiva to “provide for a community planning process to create an Environmental Justice strategy for improving the health and environment of Port Arthur residents. In addition\, an existing energy efficiency program will be expanded in order to make homes safer and healthier in this vulnerable city\, where many community members are still struggling to restore their homes more than two years after Tropical Storms Harvey and Imelda inundated Port Arthur’s historic West Side.” More: https://lonestarlegal.blog/…/port-arthur-community…/

SUMMARY:Urge Governor Abbott To Act On Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:From Environment Texas –\nJoin us at the Governor’s Mansion on Tuesday\, Jan 8th\, at 10am to tell Gov. Abbott that we want him to act on climate change! \nWhen asked whether climate change could have worsened the effects of hurricane Harvey\, Gov. Abbott said that he’s not a scientist and thus it’d be “impossible” for him to say. \nWell\, as young people and concerned citizens we know that you don’t have to be a scientist to read the news (or look out the window). The effects of climate change are happening now\, and Gov. Abbott\, as our leader and state governor\, has a responsibility to protect us and our future. \nClimate scientists warn with increasing urgency that we need to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, and Texas is no exception. That’s why Environment Texas has teamed up with climate scientists to write Gov. Abbott in response to his statement and offer to brief him on the issue. \nJoin us to deliver the letter and show Gov. Abbott that citizens\, climate scientists\, and community advocates all agree: our leaders should read the reports\, listen to the scientists\, and take action to protect our beautiful state for generations to come. \nGame plan: We’ll gather outside the Governor’s Mansion at 10am where we’ll hear from a few speakers about the letter and our new report\, “Climate Solutions from Day One: 12 Ways Governors Can Lead on Climate Now”. Then\, we’ll march to the Governor’s Reception Room at the capital to formally deliver the letter and report. \nIt’s not too late to do the right thing. We came together to battle the floodwaters of Hurricane Harvey\, and in the face of worsened coastal storms\, droughts\, and record-breaking heat waves\, we can do it again. It’s time to act on climate\, and with Gov. Abbott as an ally\, our state could do exactly that. So let’s make our voices heard\, and ask Gov. Abbott to join us in building a cleaner\, greener\, future for us all.
