SUMMARY:Virtual - Kennel Dig Guard Stakeholder Engagement
DESCRIPTION:On August 28\, 2025\, the Austin City Council passed Resolution 20250828-096. This resolution aims to improve the safety and welfare of animals at dog boarding facilities. \nAustin Development Services invites community members to share their feedback and discuss potential updates to the City Code for dog boarding facilities. The updates currently proposed would require safety features\, such as dig guards\, in new boarding facilities to help prevent dogs from escaping safe enclosures. The goal is to keep dogs safe\, protect the public\, and support responsible pet care. Your feedback will be considered in crafting our recommendations to Council. \nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:In-Person Open House: East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative
DESCRIPTION:*Please note that because of the weather\, this event was postponed from Jan. 24th to Jan. 31st*  \nJoin the City of Austin for an in-person open house on the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative. At this public meeting\, City staff will provide an update on the project\, review the timeline\, and gather your feedback. Spanish interpretation will be provided (Se proporcionará interpretación en español durante el evento de la noche). \nThe East Riverside Corridor Master Plan and Regulating Plan\, adopted in 2010 and 2013\, respectively\, regulate land use in the East Riverside area. In the last decade\, the area has experienced significant growth and investment\, and the corridor will be transformed by a light rail line currently being designed as part of Project Connect. In 2024\, Austin City Council passed Resolution 20240201-054\, directing staff to align the East Riverside Corridor Plan with the City’s Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) initiative. Updating the plan is necessary to ensure that it works with the new transit line that is coming\, supports equitable outcomes\, and reflects the evolving needs of the community. \nThe purpose of the East Riverside Corridor Planning Initiative\, which includes an update to the Vision Plan and Regulating Plan\, is to guide the growth and redevelopment of the East Riverside Corridor and to ensure that future changes in the corridor benefit everyone who lives\, works\, and plays along the corridor. Our planning efforts focus on equitable\, transit-oriented\, and walkable development\, and support the inclusion of sustainable practices\, diversity\, maintaining a mix of housing options for various income levels\, improving active transportation and transit accessibility\, and encouraging a wide range of amenities for the community to enjoy. This plan update will ensure that the current and future needs of the community are accounted for\, and the City can facilitate public and private investments in the corridor area. \nThis planning initiative will identify important actions that the City\, property owners\, and the community can take to implement the vision for the East Riverside Corridor. The Vision Plan will offer recommendations concerning planning\, zoning\, and development. It will also include equitable strategies for small business and workforce development\, housing affordability\, mobility\, land use and urban design\, and real estate and financing strategies. The Regulating Plan will define development standards and guidelines for connectivity\, urban design\, safety\, and infrastructure improvements.

SUMMARY:City of Austin Career Expo
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin is hosting its 14th Annual Career Expo on April 2\, 2025. This event is intended to help build a stronger community by providing opportunities for local employers to connect with talent to fill critical vacancies and help job seekers find that perfect job/career opportunity. \nJob Seekers will have opportunities to meet face-to-face with company representatives. This year\, the City launched a new contingent hiring pilot program in January which allows departments to conduct interviews and extend contingent job offers on-site during recruiting events. There are close to 90 different job titles included in the program in areas such as accounting\, customer service\, finance\, human resources\, healthcare\, engineering\, and various operations type jobs.  \nSeveral City departments will be participating in Career Expo and there will be opportunities for job seekers in attendance to be interviewed on the spot during the event and potentially be offered a job. Any offers would be contingent upon passing any required background checks and assessments. \nShowcase presentations by local employers will also be happening throughout the day during the event and will feature tips for job seekers. We encourage job seekers to bring copies of their resume to share with prospective employers and decide in advance which employer booths they would like to visit. \nMore than 100 employers are expected to be in attendance\, including private employers\, state agencies\, higher education\, technical schools\, temporary agencies\, many smaller businesses with skilled labor and customer service job openings\, and City of Austin departments. \nJob seekers can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Building Austin's Black Cooperative Movement
DESCRIPTION:Black communities across the U.S. and the world are engaging with the cooperative model as a tool for economic\, social\, and cultural liberation. In this session\, we will build on Austin’s Black co-op history to connect with the active and growing National Black Cooperative Movement. Guest speaker Assata Richards will explore an example from our neighbors in Houston\, where We Are The Ones cooperative is transforming what economic development means for Third Ward\, a historically Black neighborhood threatened by economic and social forces including gentrification. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to engage with each other to lay the groundwork for an ongoing Black-Led Cooperative study group here in Austin. \nGet your free ticket here. \n\nMore about Instructor Assata Richards \nAssata is the founding director of the Sankofa Research Institute (SRI)\, a nonprofit with a mission to “create knowledge to build community” through community-based participatory research. In addition\, as a public sociologist\, Assata serves as the Board President of the newly formed Houston Community Land Trust\, the Third Ward Cooperative Community Builders\, and the Emancipation Economic Development Council. Most recently\, she was elected as the founding board president of the Community Care Cooperative\, Houston’s first home care agency owned by caregivers and community health workers. Lastly\, she is a founding member of We Are The Ones\, a cooperative working to build a “Black Solidarity Economy\,” enabling community members to define what success is for them and hold accountable institutions that claim to act on their behalf and develop economic enterprises that fairly compensate workers and build community wealth.
