SUMMARY:Wild About Plants
DESCRIPTION:Grow Green is a creek-friendly gardening education program. We help protect Austin’s water by encouraging less use of landscape chemicals and keeping rain where it falls — reducing flooding\, erosion\, and pollution\, because what runs off our land flows straight to our creeks and river. We teach people how to select the right plants for their space and manage pests in ways that minimize their impact on both people and wildlife. The Central Texas climate has many extremes\, so plants must be resilient\, or “Texas tough.” Understanding what makes them capable of surviving\, as well as the regional environment and the importance of site-specific conditions\, is essential for making informed plant selection decisions. \nDenise Delaney is Austin Watershed Protection’s Grow Green Program Coordinator. Her professional horticultural roots are 40 years deep in Central Texas. She has coordinated the Grow Green program since 2004. Before that\, she was the first Director of Horticulture at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. She spent a decade working closely with Mrs. Johnson during the construction\, installation\, and establishment of the original gardens and growing operation. Other experience includes working for landscape design\, installation\, and maintenance companies on private estates\, retail nurseries\, and at the University of Texas at Austin.

SUMMARY:Public Meeting: Concept Planning for Adams-Hemphill Neighborhood Park
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin is finalizing a concept plan for Adams-Hemphill Neighborhood Park. The effort was initiated because we are proposing to install two stormwater detention basins in the park as part of Phase 1 of the Guadalupe St. Flood Risk Reduction Project. The Guadalupe project would reduce the risk of flooding in residential areas between 47th and 33rd Streets. The concept plan will guide us in the design of the basins and is meant to maximize the enjoyment of the park for those who live and work nearby. \nThis meeting is virtual and will be held on Zoom. \n\nRegister for the meeting\n\nCan’t make the meeting? Share your feedback on the proposed concept plan by completing our survey by Sunday\, December 1\, 2024. \nYou can learn more about the plan for Adams-Hemphill Neighborhood Park here.

SUMMARY:Watershed Walk: Bull Creek Hike
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Pope from the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department is leading a 1 mile hike that highlights how the requirements of the Comprehensive Watersheds Ordinance protect Austin’s creeks.  Hikers will see creek buffers\, Critical Environmental Features and look at a recent vegetation restoration project along Bull Creek.   The trail is flat but the hike will involve wading in the creek\, some moderately strenuous rock ledges to navigate and slippery ground.  The trail is family friendly and children are welcome but the content will be at an adult level. \nWhat to bring?  Water\, sunscreen and a hat.  There is poison ivy along parts of the trail so participants may want to wear long sleeves and long pants.  Shoes that can be submerged in water are strongly recommended.
