SUMMARY:PARK(ing) Day ATX
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin Transportation Department –\nParking spaces can be your playground for a day! Austin Transportation invites the public to transform parking spaces into temporary miniature parks\, or “parklets\,” for PARK(ing) Day on Friday\, Sept. 21. PARK(ing) Day is an annual\, worldwide event that promotes public engagement and dialogue on the need for public\, open spaces in urban areas. Austin residents have created numerous parklets of different shapes\, sizes and uses on PARK(ing) Days past\, and Austin Transportation encourages the public to continue this creative dialogue this year. \nWant to organize a parklet? Be sure to read the application packet for instructions on permit request and proper parklet setup: bit.ly/parkingdayatx18. The deadline for submission is Monday\, Sept. 17. Participants must pay $35 for the permit fee and an additional usage fee for the parking space\, which may range from $10 to $16 per space\, depending on the location. See the application packet for approvals required from adjacent homes and/or businesses. \nFor more information on the application process\, please contact Paloma Amayo-Ryan at 512-974-1150 or paloma.amayo-ryan@austintexas.gov. This year\, we have engaged Heyden Walker at Black + Vernooy Architects to support community members interested in doing a PARK(ing) Day installation. If you’d like a partner\, design support\, or need volunteers\, you may email her at heyden@blackvernooy.com. \nTo ensure safety and accessibility\, parklet installations should follow these conditions: \n• Parking spaces must be delineated with a series of gripper cones (orange traffic cones); cones must be between 28 and 48 inches in height and cannot be attached to each other with string or ribbon.\n• Advertising\, vending or amplified sound activities are not permitted.\n• Sidewalk or crosswalk paths must not be obstructed. \nVisitors are welcome to stop by and interact with these installations. Follow #PARKingDayATX on social media for updates on the day. \nContinue to check back here for a list of participants and their parklet locations.
