SUMMARY:Austin Climate Equity Plan Steering Committee Panel
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Austin Climate Equity Plan Steering Committee members! \nJoin us for a moderated virtual panel discussion with the team of community members who helped lead the Austin Climate Equity Plan process. In this panel we will talk about the Steering Committee Members’ role in the Climate Equity Plan and dig into topics related to the intersection of climate change and racial and environmental justice. \nBackground: Since the first Community Climate Plan was adopted in 2015\, we’ve made progress in reducing community-wide emissions in Austin\, despite rapid population growth and a growing GDP. But\, over the course of the last five years\, a lot has changed in terms of technology\, cost\, and feasibility. We also know that the rate of global warming is happening faster than we thought\, so the need to lower emissions is more urgent than ever. We also know that low-income communities and communities of color are more impacted by the climate crisis despite generally having contributed the least to climate change. With all of this in mind\, a team of City staff and community members set to update the Climate Plan. \nThe plan update process involved a Steering Committee and five advisory groups that met through Summer 2020. These groups worked to identify strategies that will help our city curb emissions while increasing equity. The advisory groups include Sustainable Buildings\, Transportation and Land Use\, Transportation Electrification\, Consumption of Goods\, and Natural Systems. We are aiming to present the plan to Austin City Council in November 2020. \nInterpretation Services & Closed Captioning: Language interpretation will be available upon request. Please notify us of this request by Monday\, September 21st. This panel discussion will be live recorded and closed-captioning will be available once publicly posted. \nMore details: The Austin Climate Equity Plan is available for public feedback! Please see our forum on SpeakUp Austin for more information on how to provide input by Sept. 30. \nContact: Please contact celine.rendon@austintexas.gov if you have any questions. \nThis event will also be livestreamed on our facebook page.

SUMMARY:Community Climate Ambassador Panel
DESCRIPTION:Meet Austin’s Community Climate Ambassadors! \nThe Office of Sustainability is in the process of updating Austin’s Climate Equity Plan. As part of this process\, 12 individuals were selected to act as Community Climate Ambassadors to gather and share information about climate change and sustainability with their community and social circles. An important part of creating\, and ultimately implementing\, this plan has been reaching out to groups that have historically been left out of the conversation about climate change. \nJoin us for a moderated virtual panel discussion with our Ambassadors and learn about their role and experiences participating in the Climate Equity Plan process. \nBackground: We know that climate solutions have the potential to improve the quality of life of all Austinites\, but climate change impacts don’t affect everyone equally. Ensuring that we are increasing equity while mitigating greenhouse gases means examining the history of racial segregation and environmental justice issues in Austin. Because of this\, we are engaging with a racially and economically diverse set of people about the challenges\, barriers\, and opportunities facing historically underrepresented groups — specifically\, people of color — in conversations around energy\, transportation\, food and access to nature. Community concerns and feedback informed the plan’s goals and strategies\, and are referenced throughout the plan. While the Climate Equity Plan will not be able to solve all of Austin’s equity challenges\, the goal of the Climate Ambassadors program was to bring to light community members’ concerns and find opportunities to begin the process of recovery and healing. \nInterpretation Services & Closed Captioning: Spanish interpretation will be available. This panel discussion will be live recorded and closed-captioning will be available once publicly posted. \nMore details: The overall goal of the Climate Equity Plan is to identify tangible and quantifiable actions that local government\, businesses and community members can undertake in the next 5-10 years. \nContact: Please contact celine.rendon@austintexas.gov if you have any questions.
