DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Parks Foundation\, Austin Nature In The City\, Zilker Botanical Garden\, TreeFolks\, Austin Parks and Recreation Department –\nCelebrating trees\, pollinators\, and all creatures! \nOn Halloween weekend\, we invite you to explore the outdoors\, get your face painted\, and celebrate in your best nature-themed costume!\nThe Roots & Wings Festival is a combined community-wide celebration for Arbor Day and Monarch Appreciation Day. This day of nature play and art just needs you! Come in costume or visit the costume creation station as we fill Zilker Botanical Garden with butterflies\, bugs\, and faeries. Let nature be your inspiration! \nRoots & Wings Festival\nSaturday\, October 27th\, 2018\n9:00 am – 2:00 pm\nZilker Botanical Garden (and parks across the city!) \nFamily Friendly Fun:\n• Opening Ceremony – Mechica Dance Group (9:20 am)\n• Butterfly tag and release station\n• Kid’s tree climb with City of Austin arborists! First come\, first served.\n• Storytelling and the Singing Zoologist\n• Costume creation station\n• Nature play and nature crafts\n• Guided nature walks through Zilker Botanical Garden\n• Food truck (or bring your own picnic!)\n• Costume parade through the park (1:30 pm) \nArrive early for the opening ceremony by the Mechica Dance Group performing a Butterfly Ceremony (9:20) and stay till the end. The event closes with a costume parade through the Oak Grove and out into the garden for a final butterfly release. Then stick around after the celebration and spend some time exploring the beauty of the Zilker Botanical Garden. The event ends at 2:00 pm\, but the garden will be open till 5:30 pm. \nZilker Botanical Garden Entrance Fees:\n• $1 for kids under 12 and seniors 62 and over\n• $2 for adults\, Austin resident\n• $3 for adults\, non-residents of Austin \n* We are not able to process credit cards at the gate. How do the biotic and abiotic parts of Earth interact and develop as a system that supports life over time? The word “ecology” was coined in 1866 by the German scientist Ernst Haeckel to name the science that was to answer those questions. At the core of this new science was the puzzle of how do “ecosystems” persist amidst change over time – and was change or permanence\, dynamics or stability\, more fundamental? Join us for an untangling of the history of American ecology and an assessment of how the idea of the balance of nature has shaped our American ideas of nature. \nCan’t make it on this lecture date? There are three others at varying dates/locations around town. You can check out the complete schedule here. Or you can listen to podcast recordings of the lecture (produced in partnership between the City of Austin and the Austin EcoNetwork) here.  \nThe lecture will be given by Kevin Anderson\, a geographer and philosopher researching the nature of\, and the nature in\, urban wastelands. He studied at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania [BA]\, Durham University\, England\, Ohio University [MA] where he taught philosophy and symbolic logic. He received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin with a dissertation entitled: Marginal Nature: Urban Wastelands and the Geography of Nature.
