We will have shifts available every day of this week\, sign up for as many or as few as you can. Each shift will have a quick intro to the campaign and training\, so all experience levels are welcome!

We demand: \n\nImmediate COVID-19 Crisis Relief (including $2\,000 per month for all) – to provide needed support for working class families across America\nA Green Stimulus (including investments in renewable Public Power) – to ensure that the recovery moves us toward a sustainable future\nA Green Job Guarantee – for a recovery that leaves no one behind in restoring millions of jobs lost during the pandemic\nThe PRO Act – that will help thousands of Texans win workplace protections\nThe Healthcare Emergency Guarantee Act – to get people the health care they need in this unprecedented time\n\nJoin us for a social bike ride to Congressman Lloyd Doggett and Senator John Cornyn’s offices. SUMMARY:Austin DSA October Monthly Meeting!
DESCRIPTION:Every month\, Austin DSA has a meeting open to members and prospective members. DSA is fighting to build a world where the working class are in charge. Our socialist vision is that if the working class can get political organized\, every single person will have high quality healthcare\, housing\, and good union job. And\, only the project of building socialism can stop climate change. \nOur monthly meetings are a great way to keep up with and plug into the work of our chapter. We’re currently working on a chapter-wide campaign to Defund the Austin Police Department. We’re out at protests and we are organizing to build as much pressure as possible on City Council to defund the police to the tune of $100 Million — or more — and put that money into the social services\, jobs\, and housing that we need to thrive. \nStay tuned for a full agenda\, and make sure to RSVP in order to get the Zoom Link!

SUMMARY:Socialist Night School: What Is Democratic Socialism?
DESCRIPTION:Socialist Night School is an open course that provides a chance to develop our politics together\, regardless of background knowledge or whether you’ve attended a class before. New members and lifelong socialists\, all are welcome! \nThis session\, we’re going back to the basics. What is Democratic Socialism and why should we fight for it? And how? We’ll answer those questions together by readings the two articles below and discussing them. \nWe’ll start Socialist Night School with a lecture (so you can participate even if you couldn’t do the readings)\, and then we’ll break out into small\, guided discussion groups led by trained facilitators. \nReadings: \nNeal Meyer\, What is Democratic Socialism. \nThis Jacobin article\, written by a DSA member\, spells out the basics of democratic socialism\, especially how it differs from liberalism and social democracy. It also names many of the challenges democratic socialists face\, and what we can do to get past them. \n  \nhttps://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/07/democratic-socialism-bernie-sanders-social-democracy-alexandria-ocasio-cortez \nMeagan Day\, Democratic Socialism Explained \nThis Vox article\, also written by a DSA member\, explains why socialists want to go beyond reforming and regulating capitalism. \nhttps://www.vox.com/first-person/2018/8/1/17637028/bernie-sanders-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-cynthia-nixon-democratic-socialism-jacobin-dsa

SUMMARY:Austin DSA Special Voting Meeting: Endorsements!
DESCRIPTION:Endorsements are a big deal for Austin DSA- we don’t just rubber-stamp lists of people who we think it would be good to have in office\, we pick campaigns that highlight the struggles of working-class people\, develop our chapter as organizers\, and give us leverage in future pressure campaigns! As such\, our endorsement means we will put organizing muscle\, membership\, and resources behind targeted campaigns\, and we don’t make those decisions without wide participation. \nWe’ve received endorsement requests from a handful of campaigns that have the potential for membership support\, and we need to have your vote\, to make sure we don’t move on anything that doesn’t have the full backing of our membership.

SUMMARY:Socialist Night School: How Can Socialists Support Public Education?
DESCRIPTION:Socialist Night School is an open course that provides a chance to develop our politics together\, regardless of background knowledge or whether you’ve attended a class before. New members and lifelong socialists\, all are welcome!\n\nSCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO SEE THE READINGS. \nWe will begin with a guest lecture from a DSA member and rank and file teacher\, Robert LeVertis Bell from Louisville\, Kentucky. \nAfter the lecture\, we will go into breakout groups for open discussion on the readings\, the lecture\, and what socialists can and should do to support organizing teachers\, school workers\, and working class parents through this crisis. \nThe American capitalist class and their representatives in state and federal government have completely failed to responsibly manage the COVID-19 pandemic. Their single-minded focus on protecting their profits has made America’s richest billionaires even richer\, while nearly 200\,000 Americans are dead.\n\nCapitalists need schools to reopen so that parents can do the work that makes capitalists their profits with fewer distractions. Working class parents\, however\, do not want to sacrifice the lives and safety of their families. School workers\, including teachers and support staff\, have the power to fight for a just response to these pandemic conditions.\n\nSince West Virginia teachers and school workers went on a statewide strike in February 2018\, educators have been leading the working class. The fight for safe school openings could become a decisive showdown that could shift the balance of power in favor of the working class\, and as socialists\, we want to be educated and prepared on what our role could be in this looming crisis.\nWe’re going to read about the recent teacher strike wave and the nationwide demand for safe school openings. \nReadings: \nWill New York Teachers Strike for Safe Schools? An Interview with Jia Lee\, a special education teacher at the Earth School\, a United Federation of Teachers (UFT) chapter leader\, and an organizer with the Movement of Rank-and-File Educators (MORE)\, the UFT’s rank-and-file caucus.\nhttps://jacobinmag.com/2020/08/teacher-strike-new-york-covid-19-reopening-schools \nInterview with Eric Blanc: We Need to Reconnect Socialists to the US Labor Movement https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/08/eric-blanc-labor-movement-militant-minority-red-state-revolt \nSocialists have historically played a key role in the US labor movement as part of a broader current of militant rank-and-file workers. The recent teachers’ strike wave shows that to rebuild unions\, we have to build that militant current.

SUMMARY:Phonebank to #DefundAPD
DESCRIPTION:We’re coming into the home stretch! We are now at the point where there are amendments on the table before city council which would\, if passed actually remove $100 MILLION dollars from APD to spend on essential services and alternative first response. Something that would have been flatly impossible a few years ago is now just a few votes from being a reality\, but we have to work as hard as possible to make sure we get those votes! \nAustin DSA will be calling progressive voters in the districts of the swing council members to make sure they tell their council members to move forward on truly transformative reforms! We’re using an auto-dialer\, which makes the calls faster and more effective the more people who are doing it at once\, which means you should BRING A FRIEND (or comrade). We’ll be training folks to speak on the specific amendments\, and then working through our entire list!

SUMMARY:How Can Socialists Fight for The End of Policing?
DESCRIPTION:You must RSVP here for the Zoom Link: https://actionnetwork.org/events/how-can-socialists-fight-for-the-end-of-policing-a-conversation-with-alex-vitale/ \nThe nationwide protests against racist police violence have been inspiring\, and as socialist organizers we fight for political reforms like defunding the police that can meaningfully restructure our society for justice and peace. On Friday\, join us for a discussion with Alex Vitale\, Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College and author of The End of Policing (temporarily free as an e-book) on how we can organize for lasting political reform. \nWe’re living through another wave of racial terrorism and police murders of black people. Working class people and working class communities of color in the United States have just lost tens of millions of our jobs through no fault of our own. As a result of the structure of the racial capitalism\, the victims of COVID-19 are overwhelming black people and people of color\, who disproportionately are low-wage essential workers who cannot work from home\, and who disproportionately cannot afford quality healthcare. Throughout this crisis\, politicians at all levels of government are overwhelmingly in the hands of the capitalist class\, and are doing all they can to bail capitalists out at the expense of the working class. \nWe know that neoliberal capitalism leaves millions of us to starve and to be targeted\, harassed\, and imprisoned. We have a carceral and police system designed to target the poorest among us instead of providing universal\, class-wide social programs for our health\, housing\, and dignity. Without universal social reforms that undermine the basis of poverty\, the capitalist class divides the working class and targets the most vulnerable among us. This is how we have ended up with a years-long pandemic of US police killing people\, often without consequences. They are fulfilling their role in society\, and it is our job to change society to eliminate that role. Let’s discuss how we can do that together and organize for justice for all.

SUMMARY:Socialist Night School: Green New Deal!
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here to get the Zoom call link: https://actionnetwork.org/events/socialist-night-school-green-new-deal-may-20 \nSocialist Night School is an open course that provides a chance to develop our politics together\, regardless of background knowledge or whether you’ve attended a class before. New members and lifelong socialists\, all are welcome! To sign up for our mailing list or to find out more\, e-mail us at leadership@austindsa.org \nSince its introduction\, the Green New Deal has received a lot of attention. Bernie and AOC’s Green New Deal is the only US policy proposal that honestly confronts the severity of the climate crisis\, and there has been a lot of excitement about its potential. The standard criticisms from the right are well known by now\, but there are also criticisms about the policy from the left that are worth examination. \nFor this session we will be reading several pieces that tackle the Green New Deal from various perspectives on the left. During our discussion we’ll analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each piece\, and try to imagine what a socialist Green New Deal might look like. \nREADINGS: \nPlan\, Mood\, Battlefield – Reflections on the Green New Deal\, Thea Riofrancos\, Viewpoint Magazine\nhttps://www.viewpointmag.com/2019/05/16/plan-mood-battlefield-reflections-on-the-green-new-deal/ \nA Class Struggle Strategy for a Green New Deal\, Multiple authors\, Socialist Forum\nhttps://socialistforum.dsausa.org/issues/winter-2019/a-class-struggle-strategy-for-a-green-new-deal/

SUMMARY:The ABC's of the Green New Deal with Sunrise ATX
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Sunrise ATX and the Austin Democratic Socialists of America –\nAustin DSA and Sunrise ATX will host a 90 minute session on the basics of climate change\, how we got here\, and how the Green New Deal\, as socialists envision it\, can help us solve the great existential challenge of our time. \nThe session will open with a short presentation on the problem of climate change and how it got so bad (hint: we call it “capitalism”) followed by breakout groups on Green New Deal policies that can help us solve the underlying crisis and care for those least responsible and most affected by it. Then we’ll talk about our campaigns and how you can get involved locally in this exciting work. \nThe event is kid friendly (no childcare on site though\, unfortunately) and wheelchair accessible. More details to come\, but make plans now to join us!
