SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Bring your favorite things back to life at this Fix-It Clinic hosted by Austin Creative Reuse through the City of Austin’s Fix-It Austin Partner program.\n \nWhat’s a Fix-It Clinic? \nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your sewing machine stop working? Has the chain on your necklace broken? Bring these items and more to our next Fix-It Clinic to learn how to fix your broken items from skilled volunteer coaches — for free!\n \nWhile we can’t guarantee your item will be fixed\, coaches will guide you through how the item works and what you may need for repair. Attendees are expected to actively participate and stay with their items during the repair process. Dropping items off is not allowed.\n \nWhat should I bring? \nYour broken item(s) and a desire to improve your repair skills! You may bring up to two items. Tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own tools if you prefer. Please bring any replacement part\, missing button\, fabric patch\, matching thread or other material you might need to help you fix your item. We will also have materials available through our center.\n \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, we’ll be focusing on: \n\nSewing machines and sergers\nCreative clothing repairs and patching\nJewelry repair\n\nWho can attend?\n \nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fix-It Clinics are a great learning opportunity for children ages 7 and up!\n \nHow do I sign up? \nRight here! You may reserve up to two tickets based on your broken item and arrival time. One ticket = one item. If you are registering for other family members\, you may select up to two tickets per participant. Please register tickets under the name of the person who will be working on the item. We will have a list of who has registered at the check-in booth\, so no need for you to print your confirmation.\n \nWhat if the clinic is sold out for the item I want to bring? \nIf your preferred ticket is sold out\, you may still come to the Fix-It Clinic with your item. We will do our best to accommodate you\, but we cannot guarantee the availability of coaches. Check Austin Resource Recovery’s official web page for an announcement of the next one!\n \nCan I volunteer at the clinic? \nWe are always looking for individuals with repair skills to become Fix-It Coaches! To sign up as a repair coach for our Clinic\, visit our volunteer sign-up platform online and claim a spot.\n \nThis is an indoor clinic\, masks are optional\, but encouraged. \nAfter the clinic\, stick around to enjoy a free screening of the new SCRAP documentary in ACR’s side parking lot.\n \nAbout ACR: \nAustin Creative Reuse (ACR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to foster conservation and reuse through creativity\, education and community building. We opened Austin’s first and only creative reuse center in September 2015. In our center\, we collect\, process and re-sell gently used creative materials donated from individuals and businesses. To date\, ACR has diverted more than one million pounds of usable creative materials from the landfill and hosted hundreds of workshops and community events to promote creative reuse. SUMMARY:Junk Journals: An Adventure in Paper
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you’ll create two projects. We’ll use a blank greeting card to transform into an easy travel journal complete with pockets for all of those traveling treasures. We will also use a single pice of card stock to create a junk journal embellished to your particular tastes.\n \nWe will have a buffet of materials to personalize your creations. Come learn the art of junk journaling!\n \nThis workshop is best for folks over 12\, minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets can be purchased here. \n \nAbout the Instructor: \nSam Beckerman has been crafting since grade school. She spent her allowance on those fabric loops to make potholders and then her grandmother taught her to embroider. In junior high and high school\, she learned to tailor clothes and won ribbons at the County Fair. She retired at 50 and mainly works with paper now\, after voting mosaics off the island. During the early years of retirement\, she collected many blue ribbons at the Nevada State Fair. She’s especially proud of the wedding album (redone) that won a “best of show” award. She tells people it was the big blue one with the metal center – like they give the cows! She regularly taught Junk Journal workshops at Recycled Reads until they closed down for COVID in 2020.

SUMMARY:Indian Handheld Fans
DESCRIPTION:Indian handheld fans\, known as “Haath pankha”\, have been used since ancient times. From highly embellished kinds with luxurious embroideries and fabrics used for royals to basic ones for the commoners\, they were a part of daily life. Each region of the subcontinent had its own unique style too! Join us in making your very own Haath pankha\, which you can carry on a warm sunny day to a picnic in the park – it’s bound to make you look and feel cool!!\n \nThis workshop is best enjoyed by those 12 years old and up. In her work\, she’s concerned with experiments that combine old and new. She is drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to her. She loves the interplay of the two as she adjusts traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades her daily life and work: she saves fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporates them into her work. Making things by hand gives her joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives her joy\, as a result her crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!\n \nFind more of her work on her Facebook or IG @preetishandmades

SUMMARY:Multimedia Mosaic Mirror Shadow Box
DESCRIPTION:All ages and all skill levels welcome! Kids 12 and under must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.\n\n \nLearn the art of mosaic through this guided workshop. Your design can be whatever you’d like – think of inspiration from a trip\, a song\, a sport\, etc.\, or be inspired by the materials around you!\n\n \nParticipants are also welcome to bring their own special pieces to incorporate into their piece (shells\, broken pottery\, old jewelry\, hardware\, etc.). Hard materials will work best (ceramic\, glass\, metal\, etc.) rather than paper\, fabric\, etc.\nOnce you’ve got your mosaic pieces gathered\, you will learn to arrange them inside a shadow box. Note: boxes are MDF\, which is suitable for indoor use only.\n\n \nThis is an indoor workshop\, masks required.\n\n \n**About the Instructor:**\nMary is an artist and engineer who enjoys the challenge and inspiration of using found materials and reusing discarded materials. Her personal creative focus is currently on multimedia mosaics and kiln-formed glass. Mary has taught engineering labs at UC Berkeley and loves facilitating mosaic projects with kids. SUMMARY:Workshop: Guatemalan Worry Dolls
DESCRIPTION:According to Guatemalan legend\, if you tell these dolls your worries at night and put them under your pillow\, your worries will be taken away when you wake up. Make these cute little dolls for yourself or your friend!\n\n \nAbout the Instructor:\nI am Preeti Agrawal\, a craft blogger and watercolorist. In my work\, I am concerned with experiments that combine old and new. I am drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to me. I love the interplay of the two as I adjust traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades my daily life and my work: I save fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporate them in my work. Making things by hand gives me joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives me joy\, as a result my crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!\n\n \nFind out more about Preeti at:\nwww.facebook.com/preetishandmades\nwww.instagram.com/preetishandmades

SUMMARY:Craft Night September: DIY Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:Last month\, ACR shift lead\, Ericka\, created an incredible tutorial for their spotlight and we absolutely loved the idea so much\, we had to turn it into a craft night! Using primarily bucket materials\, you’ll learn to create your very own crazy kaleidoscope. There will be plenty of sparkle to go around!\n\n \nThis is an indoor workshop. Masks and social distancing required.\n \n\nAbout Craft Night:\nFalling on the 4th Thursday of each month\, Craft Night is a long held tradition led by two of ACR’s dedicated core volunteers. Craft Night is not only an opportunity to celebrate the pure joy of making things\, but is also an excellent chance to explore the rich offerings of ACR’s wonderful bucket section. Your admission fee of $5 will entitle you to fill a bucket with items from our bucket section that can be used for that evening’s project (along with whatever else happens to tickle your fancy)! Pack it to the brim if you’d like to get every bit of your $5 worth! Your instructors will organize a project for each class and after walking you through the framework\, will turn you loose to gather items for your project so you can commence to crafting. We’ll provide tools and any specialty items you might need to complete the project.\nCraft night is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and each person is required to purchase a ticket.
