SUMMARY:Dinner and Discussion: Inside the Fight to Stop LNG in the Valley!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Sierra Club\, Public Citizen Texas\, the Austin Environmental Justice Team\, Extinction Rebellion ATX\, and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas –\nJoin community members from the Rio Grande Valley and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas for a dinner and panel discussion to learn more and take action to stop the fracked gas expansion near South Padre Island\, defend sacred indigenous sites\, and protect communities from environmental racism! \nFor years\, community members and activists have been organizing in the Rio Grande Valley to stop the construction of the Texas LNG export terminal and two other fracked gas projects. \nA lot is at stake in this fight! If the proposed Texas LNG terminal is built\, it would destroy the Garcia Pasture\, a historical indigenous site home to sacred burial grounds and a village. The project would also pollute nearby communities with known hazardous chemicals and irreparably destroy the habitat for endangered species\, like the ocelot. \nWe can stop all of this destruction. Our growing movement has already successfully pressured the bank to divest from the Texas LNG project\, stopped two of the projects from getting tax handouts from the school district\, and we are determined to prevent all three of these LNG projects- none of which currently have permits to build! \nRead More: https://www.texasobserver.org/liquefied-natural-gas-rio-grande-valley-endangered-pollution/

SUMMARY:Rally to Protect the Rio Grande Valley\, Stop Texas LNG!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Sierra Club\, Public Citizen\, Extinction Rebellion ATX\, and the Austin Environmental Justice Team –\nOn November 20\, three South Texas coastal communities that would be directly impacted by Texas LNG: City of Port Isabel\, Long Island Village\, and Laguna Heights are challenging the company’s permit to pollute the air they breathe. \nJoin us for a rally & press conference before the Texas LNG air permit hearing in Austin\, TX! After the rally\, we will watch the Texas LNG case hearing & support the Valley communities fighting to protect the air we breathe. And later that evening\, there will be a dinner and panel discussion to learn more about the Valley’s fight to stop LNG and hear from community members and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas! \nThe construction of the Texas LNG project would bulldoze sacred Indigenous sites and pristine wildlands near South Padre Island to build flammable pipelines\, storage tanks\, and smoking flare stacks. \nRally & Press Conference: 11:00 – 12:30 PM\, Outside Willam P. Clements State Office Bldg\, (300 W 15th S.\, Austin\, TX 78701). \nTexas LNG Case Hearing: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM\, William P. Clements State Office Bldg\, 4th Floor CourtRoom (300 W 15th St.\, Austin\, TX 78701). \nDinner & Panel Discussion: Inside the Fight to Stop LNG in the Valley! 6:00 – 8:00 PM: First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin (4700 Grover Ave\, Austin\, TX) \nMore Information: \nA lot is at stake in this fight! Texas LNG would destroy an indigenous historical site called “Garcia Pasture” with burial grounds and village that is sacred to the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas\, pollute nearby communities\, and irreparably destroy the habitat of the endangered ocelot. \nBut all of this can be stopped! We have already successfully convinced a bank to divest from the Texas LNG project\, and these LNG projects do not have permits to build. Their construction is not a done deal! SUMMARY:People's Hearing for Carbon Free Austin
DESCRIPTION:From Austin People’s Climate Mobilization\, Public Citizen Texas\, 350 Austin\, and ATXEJ –\nCome pack the rally & council chamber & demand a carbon-free Austin by 2030! Our futures depend on it!\n——-WEAR GREEN & BRING SIGNS!——- \nThe Austin City Council has a chance to take a big step in the right direction by committing Austin Energy — the city’s electric utility — to be 100 PERCENT CARBON-FREE BY 2030! We are fighting for climate protection and climate justice for those most impacted by climate change. We want affordable carbon-free energy! \nAgenda\n6pm – Meet before\, pass out information\, sign up to speak\n6:30pm – Public hearing begins \nCities can fill the void caused by President Donald Trump withdrawing the U.S. from the historic Paris Climate Accord.\nAND AUSTIN SHOULD LEAD THE WAY!\n\nThe current proposal isn’t nearly ambitious enough\, and Austin Energy wants the Council to approve it in a rush. Austin Energy has been a leader on climate in the past\, but the standard for leadership now is 100 percent renewable energy. \nA couple of U.S. cities already have achieved this goal\, and at least 25 have committed to do so\, several well before 2030. Wind and solar energy are now cost-competitive with energy from fossil fuels\, and allow the utility to lock in low prices for decades. This is Austin’s chance to lead the country on climate\, and we must ensure that the City Council doesn’t rapidly approve a plan that doesn’t go far enough.\nNOW IS THE TIME FOR BOLD ACTION. BE A PART OF THIS! \nContact: kwhite@citizen.org \n#CarbonFreeBy2030

SUMMARY:ATXEJ August Meeting: Border Wall\, Gentrification\, and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) –\n\nGeneral meeting for ATXEJ/Austin Environmental Justice Team. We’ll give updates on climate justice & gentrification resistance\, with some time for groups to break out. Anyone is welcome. Food will be provided but folks are always welcome to bring a dish and non-alcoholic beverage to share. \nWe’ll have a brief update on the upcoming mobilization to South Texas to stand against the coming construction of the Border Wall through the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge. Follow Save the Mission! Save the River! Resist the Wall! for more details and sign the petition against the wall athttp://bit.ly/NoBorderWall \nThe ATXEJ Climate Justice working group is mobilizing support for the August 10th People’s Hearing for Carbon-Free Austin at City Hall to call on city council to move toward a carbon free energy grid by 2030 and to develop more equitable & just local clean energy programs. \nTwo gentrification resistance teams (Springdale-Airport and Montopolis) are actively working toward community-led neighborhood resiliency & revitalization in East Austin. in the Springdale-Airport neighborhood\, members of “S.A.N.A.” Springdale-Airport Neigborhood Association are organizing for the completion of the La Loma Trail w/ safe routes to school for area students\, and are calling for the restoration of the Red Bluff vista and its transformation into a community-managed nature preserve. \nIn Montopolis\, allies & activists are organizing alongside longtime neighbors & former students of the Montopolis School for Negro Children in an effort to stop developer Austin Stowell’s plans to turn the historic Montopolis School building & surrounding landscape into a commercial mixed use project. More info at Save Montopolis! Fight Erasure & Gentrification. This will also connect with ongoing work to democratize the CodeNext process and organizing to bring more equity & justice into Austin’s next land use policy rewrite. \nCome hear updates and break into working groups to learn how you can get more involved.

SUMMARY:ATXEJ Training: Power Mapping and Lobbying at City Hall
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) –\nWe march\, we sign petitions\, we testify\, we rally\, we call\, we email. We lobby. Together these are just some of the tools in the greater toolbox for justice. \nAt this short workshop we’ll zero on in two key pieces of influencing decision-makers on policy issues: power mapping and in-person lobbying. We’ll also provide a brief overview of how strategic mobilizations\, community partnerships\, and direct action can serve to create leverage for negotiating better policy outcomes in halls of government power. \nIt’s time to swing into action for climate justice in Austin! Your voices are needed now to lobby city council members to make Austin a national leader in climate protection by committing to power our city with carbon-free sources of energy by 2030. This is a very winnable goal\, all we have to do is make ourselves heard. \nYour voices are incredibly important and powerful in this moment. When climate deniers like Donald Trump\, Ted Cruz and Greg Abbott want to increase fossil fuel investments and withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords\, it is critical that we do all we can to fight at the local city government level. \nMass demonstrations are important\, but we can’t expect to win without learning how to meet with and communicate effectively with decision makers. Come and learn which council members have power in particular areas\, how decisions are influenced\, and how to convey your perspective and needs to your elected representatives. \nWe’ve won many local climate and environmental justice victories over the past 3 years due to a combination of power in the streets and people power in the halls of government. Let’s do it again.

SUMMARY:Earth Day: Sunset Potluck and Walk
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) –\nOn Earth Day 2017\, the Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association (SANA) and Sierra Club’s ATXEJ (Environmental Justice) team invite you to a sunset potluck\, walk\, and discussion about Red Bluff\, dubbed “East Austin’s Mt. Bonnell.” \nFor more than 50 years\, East Austin’s Red Bluff vista was neglected and forgotten. Once a playground for neighborhood children looking to climb cliffs and hunt rabbits\, the vista became home to dumped chemicals\, trash\, and oil waste. \nWorking together in 2015-2017\, neighborhood residents won a major victory for open space in East Austin: an agreement from Austin’s Environmental Commission and City Council to pursue permanent protection of Red Bluff. \nJoin us on April 22nd for a potluck\, short evening walk (about half a mile)\, and Earth Day discussion\, as we sit atop Red Bluff and watch the sunset across downtown Austin. We’ll hear directly from longtime residents of the neighborhood about their relationship with this land\, and from other community activists and organizers about the history of Environmental Racism and injustice in East Austin. \nThis picnic is open to all\, as a space for education and community organizing. Neighborhood residents have won a major victory with Red Bluff\, but there are still major questions about how the land will be managed and protected; there’s still a lot of work to be done. We’re working to build a long-term campaign centered on supporting the demands and vision of residents in the Springdale-Airport neighborhood. \nWE’LL LEARN ABOUT: \n• The history of environmental racism in East Austin \n• Gentrification and displacement of people of color in one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods \n• Safe trails and walking paths for students at Eastside Memorial High School \n• How to be an ally in the fight for environmental and racial justice in communities of color \nMORE INFORMATION \n• To learn more about SANA visit www.springdaleairport.org \n• To learn more about ATXEJ visit http://www.facebook.com/atxej \n• Watch a short video “Red Bluff: 50 years of dumping on East Austin’s Mt. Bonnell”  https://vimeo.com/158287794 \nWHAT TO BRING \n• Closed toe shoes and long pants – VERY IMPORTANT for bugs and occasional poison ivy! \n• Bug spray (useful for springtime evenings in the woods around Austin!) \n• Water\, dinner or snack – please consider bringing food to share\, potluck-style \n• Blanket or folding chair \n• Camera for photos \n• Flashlight\, headlamp\, and/or lantern \nDIRECTIONS \nHarold Court isn’t a through street\, so make sure you follow the map link to the correct side (off 183/Ed Bluestein). If you’re on a mobile device and can’t access the Meetup map\, this Google Maps link also works:\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/Red+Bluff+Park/@30.2697622\,-97.6779568\,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x6846ea783eaa2f4d!8m2!3d30.269389!4d-97.67588?hl=en

SUMMARY:TX Water Protectors Say No to Corruption at TPWD
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) –\nKelcy Warren is a pipeline billionaire\, Energy Transfer Partners CEO\, and man behind the Dakota Access Pipeline\, Comanche Trail Pipeline (El Paso)\, and Trans-Pecos Pipeline (Big Bend). After donating $700k to Governor Greg Abbott’s campaign\, Warren was rewarded with a seat on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission – a commission that is in part responsible for regulating pipelines in our state parks! \nWarren has vowed to continue constructing his pipelines despite widespread public and government opposition. \nCome rally and speak at the next public meeting of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission in solidarity with Native peoples in protecting our land and water from pipelines and fossil fuel development.\n\nWHAT: TX Water Protectors say NO! to Kelcy Warren on TPWC\nWHEN: Thursday\, March 23rd 8:00 AM\nNOTE: The TPWC meets March 23rd for a commissioner’s meeting that is open to the public at 9 am. Bring noisemakers\, friends\, and family!\nWHERE: 4200 Smith School Rd Austin\, TX 78744 (Texas Parks & Wildlife HQ) \nSign and share this petition to get corruption OUT of TPWD:sc.org/fuerawarren \nSome of our most treasured natural spaces in Texas – Balmorhea & San Solomon Springs\, Big Bend\, the Rio Grande River\, and South Padre Island – are under attack by the fossil fuel industry.* \nWe need people to defend our water sources. The sacred springs of Texas have nurtured the people of this land for thousands of years. Currently only 6 percent of Texas lands remains in public hands – these places should not be given away for corporate exploitation and the export of fossil fuels\, putting money into the pockets of those who want to exploit our land. \nThe political economy of Texas is corrupt – it’s rooted in a millionaire class that is exploiting our public land for their private gain. The TPWD mission is severely undermined by the practice of using public lands for resource extraction such as oil drilling\, gas fracking and energy transport pipelines. \nBoards and commissions that are supposed to be in charge of preserving the public good are instead appointed by our Governor Greg Abbott for their own professional corporate interests. \nOur waters are currently under threat. It’s time to take a stand and speak out against the fossil fuel destruction and corruption of our lands\, water\, air\, and democracy in Texas. \n*Balmorhea & San Solomon Springs are threatened by Apache Corporation’s oil & gas drilling near Balmorhea State Park. Big Bend is threatened by Energy Transfer Partners; Trans Pecos Pipeline. The Rio Grande River is threatened in Eagle Pass by the Dos Republicas Coal Mine and in El Paso County by Energy Transfer Partners’ Comanche Trails Pipeline. South Padre Island is threatened by proposed massive export terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG). \nHouston Chronicle Story\nhttp://fuelfix.com/blog/2016/10/10/texas-parks-department-admits-it-never-studied-impact-of-oil-drilling-on-balmorhea-springs/ \nProfile of Kelcy Warren\nhttp://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2015-05-19/pipeline-billionaire-kelcy-warren-is-having-fun-in-the-oil-bust \nDakota Access Pipeline Builder Spends Millions to Influence Elections\nhttps://www.popularresistance.org/dakota-access-pipeline-builder-spends-millions-to-influence-elections/

SUMMARY:Austin Stands with Standing Rock - Bank Breakup Protest
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club’s Austin Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) and the Texas Water Protectors –\nTaking a lunch break on Monday?\nDo you have an account with Chase?\nNext Monday: stand with #NoDAPL –and if you can\, close that account.\nBreak up with the Bank — or come pack the bank lobby — to protest Chase’s $312M investment in Energy Transfer Partners. \nAre you willing to help us pack the Chase Bank lobby to disrupt business as usual? WE NEED YOU. OMG\, do we need you. We need LOTS and LOTS of people. At least 500. Preferably 1\,000 or more. (We want any regular bank customer who isn’t divesting or protesting the bank to face a packed-like-sardines bank that makes them prefer to come back later.) \nYou can help us reverse Austin’s history of keeping public money in dirty investments. \nSupport Standing Rock activists and people fighting for clean water. \nInvest in a renewable future for Austin and Texas. The City of Austin has at least $1 million invested with JP Morgan Chase\, possibly more with others. Show them how it’s done. \n#ResistinInAustin\n#FixinAustin\n#DivestATX\n#LetsDivestATX\n#AccelerateWithAustin\n#DefundDAPLAustin\n#StandForWater\n#WaterIsLife\n#BankExit \nWe saw a historic day last week when the Seattle City Council Finance Committee voted to advance an ordinance to end their city’s $3 billion financial relationship with Wells Fargo. The divestment movement in solidarity with water protectors got this major win with Seattle\, and it will continue across the country in cities like Minneapolis – and\, with your help\, in Austin! \nIt’s the start of a movement to divest Austin’s money from Chase and other banks that back these socially and environmentally destructive projects. We instead want our money to be invested responsibly in the name of community development. In banks and credit unions that provide financial services to economically marginalized communities and individuals\, whose loans support jobs\, housing\, and social services in these communities. In renewable energy that actually creates jobs. \nStep 1. Fill out this form if you bank with Chase — we’ll help you close your account: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfyZU5AT3_04IRCP2iWAmIhZAJ_NkTAWBMDWumQv3aT3mw9YQ/viewform \nStep 2. Come to a training the Saturday before the event Feb. 11th. You’ll learn about nonviolent direct action where we’ll be making Valentines for our friends at city hall\, thanking them for their work as part of this effort and sharing your hopes for the future. \nDetails & Location for Saturday’s Training Are HERE… check them out!!\nWhat: Forum\, Training\, and Valentine-Making for Chase Bank Breakup Action.\n**We will have facilitators\, trainers\, paper\, markers\, snacks\, and glitter.**\nWhen: 2-5 PM THIS Saturday\, Feb. 11\nWhere: Fiesta Beach Park\, south of Martin Middle School. Park on Comal near Haskell Street and walk towards the Hike and Bike Trail (see map).\nWhy: Review the plan for Monday then learn and practice how to put nonviolent direct action principles into action there. Connect with other people in Austin working to get city money out of dirty banks\, in solidarity with Standing Rock and anti-fracking and -pipeline efforts in West Texas as part of the national #BankExit movement to #Divest.\nWho: Anyone planning to attend Monday’s action at Chase Bank\, or interested in participating in future actions\nNo RSVP Necessary. Wear weather-appropriate clothes you can move in and bring water and a snack. See you there… and please spread the word and invite your friends\, family and neighbors! We can’t wait to see you.\n#ResistinInAustin #RiseWithStandingRock #BreakUpWithChase#DumpChase #ItStartedWithSeattle #WaterIsLife #BankExit #NextToDivest \nStep 3. Meet us at the Chase at Lavaca and 6th at noon on Feb. 13th. WEAR RED OR PINK. Bring your valentine for the city.
